To want a dog

Our last dog died. I vowed never again. Now I am wavering. I miss the walks and social contact with people.

What made you cow never again in the first place?

Butterandsugar · 04/08/2017 22:23

*vow

BlurryFace · 04/08/2017 22:23

YANBU, dogs are great. I had a cat who died when I was in my teens and it was a while before I felt like having another pet because it hurt me so much when he died so I can understand being unsure.

Beebee7 · 04/08/2017 22:24

No of course YANBU.

How long ago dog your dog die?

Onlythehorses · 04/08/2017 22:25

The walking and the walking ... but I miss it now!

A year ago. I miss the social side.

What breed was your DDog? Maybe consider a breed that requires less exercise?

dudsville · 04/08/2017 22:28

It's time op, you're heart is ready!

Plainlycrackers · 04/08/2017 22:28

YANBU you have a dog shaped hole in your world... fill it!! We only lasted 2 weeks without one before we succumbed. My Bestie thought she couldn't bear to get another of the same breed after she lost her first aged15... she ended up with the same again within weeks and now has 2!!

theaveragewife · 04/08/2017 22:28

YANBU, as long as you understand the walking will happen every day and the benefits of the dog outweigh the days you don't want to walk - do it!!

What kind of dog are you looking to get? Maybe one that needs walking less/has smaller legs would be best?

Maelstrop · 04/08/2017 22:30

If you work suitable hours, I'd say do it. I don't think I could be without mine now. It kills me that he's now a very old boy and fading fast.

Onlythehorses · 04/08/2017 22:31

I have heard Basset Hounds are very lazy dogs. This may be what is needed!

Orangebird69 · 04/08/2017 22:32

You want a lazy dog? Go rescue a retired greyhound. 😍

Butterandsugar · 04/08/2017 22:37

I second rescuing a retired Greyhound - you'll skip the puppy work and they're very low maintenance

user1482443190 · 04/08/2017 22:38

Second a greyhound or Lurcher as a lazy dog - you'll be cursing about them trying to trip you up while they lay about doing nothing though!

LaurieFairyCake · 04/08/2017 22:39

I said I wouldn't get another after my adored boy died

I was wrong and I left it too long (2 years). I now have the most loved dog in the world and wish I'd not left it at all.

My heart needs a dog in it.

mummabubs · 04/08/2017 22:39

And I third a rescued greyhound- ours sleeps/lounges about the house for about 16 hours a day. They need little exercise and are very affectionate 😊

Onlythehorses · 04/08/2017 22:42

Worried about greyhound with cats?

OP posts:
Orangebird69 · 04/08/2017 22:44

My mums 2 lurchers are terrified of my two cats that live with her 😂😂

user1482443190 · 04/08/2017 22:46

It depends on the dog and the cat - I've a cocky cat that stood it's ground with mine, they get on great now, even though my dog has a huge prey drive (never, ever goes off lead). Rescue centres are great for assessing whether they are cat friendly or not.

Wolfiefan · 04/08/2017 22:46

You may have to wait for a cat friendly one. I know someone on here fosters puppies and dogs for a charity and has cats too.
My wolfhound lives with two cats. It takes thought. I wouldn't have her off lead and bouncing round the garden with them but they do like to join us for walks!

GinIsIn · 04/08/2017 22:47

Greyhounds are great, but I cannot emphasise enough just how lazy - if you miss the walking even a little, they may actually be too lazy for you.

user1482443190 · 04/08/2017 22:48

Orange - my lurcher cries at butterflies and is scared of DDs hamster 😂 Dappiest dogs going, but I love them 😍

thenightsky · 04/08/2017 22:48

I've had a dog shaped hole for over ten years now (lost my lab to old age).

I'm perking up my ears at the suggestions of retired/rescue greyhounds though.

Not up to miles of walking since my arthritis diagnosis.

Wolfiefan · 04/08/2017 22:49

They really aren't up for walking miles. Not at all. Gorgeous dogs too!
