... to think MNers are a strange bunch?

Aibu to think that Mumsnet can't be representative of real life, can it?!

A lot of people on here just seem so, I don't know, just... odd. Bizarre. Strange. A lot of people on here just seem to have really outlandish odd opinions that I'm just not sure if I'd ever hear someone have in real life. Posters just seem to pick up on the most unusual things from posts i.e. A poster posts about how they didn't get a house they bid on, and then another poster chimes in saying how they're even lucky to have 5p in savings etc etc (I'm rubbish at examples).

So yes, aibu to think that some (not all) mumsnetters are crazy aliens who I have no idea how they function in the real world?

Ps I like mumsnet and it provides me with a lot of entertainment. The strangeness does not make me want to leave.

I,m the opposite to you minions i make thoughtful and I think insightful comments that mainly get ignoredGrin

Bluntness100 · 05/08/2017 11:20

I particularly like the ones who think they are living in a JAMES bond novel.

" wait till he's asleep, use his thumb to access his phone, then lock yourself in the toilet in the middle of the night and go through his messages, emails and photos"
" enable tracking on his phone and then see where he goes, then be where he is"
" hide your iPad in his car and follow him"
" wait till he's out and gather all his paper work then see a secret solicitor, then you'll be prepared"

" but he's defintely not having an affair I only posted because he's got this leaving message on his card"

"Do it, he's a cunt and he's clearly having an affair.then ltb, what woman wouldn't want to shag your husband"

Yes I love MN precisely because of the level of bonkers on here. Ive learned that some people are really stupid, some are so intelligent and articulate, some are able to see the viewpont of others, others are blind to anything beyond their own experience.....

But I also think the vast majority of MNs would get along just fine in RL, even the people who tend to piss each other off on here.

x2boys · 05/08/2017 11:25

Boys are 4 times more likely to have autism hiphop it does seem more prevalent now but maybe that's just me ds is severely autistic so we do meet lots of other autism familys

I love mn but i rarely post as i seem to have a username that stands out, not sure why. I mean if 20 posters express the same view as me it will always be my post that will be highlighted and dismissed, i still don't know why as i don't make offensive remarks or mock people, just state my opinion.

I suspect a lot of us feel like that sometimes Minion, you're not alone Smile

I love mumsnet as it is one of the only spaces in which I feel normal! I have realised that it is ok to swear, drink wine, be a feminist, be a working mother, be a slattern.

I seem to be surrounded in RL by women I have nothing in common with - women who obsess over pandora jewellery, post every bowel movement on Facebook, have twigs and shit in their houses, and the highlight of the day is hanging out gossiping at the school gate getting disproportionately excited by the next PTA event.

Sometimes I feel like a freak in RL because I didn't have a complete personality transplant as soon as I popped out offspring.

I don't like the ridiculous nitpicking and pulling posters apart like you get on aibu. But I do like the frank and intelligent conversation.

juneau · 05/08/2017 11:38

I think MN is very true to life - but with the filters taken off. People can show their true selves, warts and all, when they can be anonymous. People ARE weird, they DO obsess about stupid stuff, they endure situations that others would find intolerable, they survive and even thrive in very difficult circumstances, they're shallow and feckless, stupid and ignorant, interesting and thoughtful, kind and generous, mean and vicious. MN is a microcosm of real life - but where people can say what they really think, not what they know they have to for the sake of civility.

Abra1d · 05/08/2017 11:47

The thing that sometimes astounds me is the lack of reading comprehension skills. People give facts in their OP and these just aren't processed by people who post on the thread.

Pickleshickles · 05/08/2017 11:56

I still can't get over the posters who thought it was rational for someone with a tiny baby to remove it from a buggy and hold it in one arm while using a toilet one handed in a cubicle when the accessible toilet was available and empty.

Utter insanity to me.

What a great thread. The best one for me is when in all desperation they pull out the 'disingenuous' card, what a load of shite that one is. That said I despise Jojo bows and told DD5 she couldn't have one last week.

I also have found people on here who share views of mine that others IRL disagree with, particularly in relation to feminism.

But weird stuff includes:

  • 1 glass of wine a night makes you an alcoholic
  • 50 quid a week covers the supermarket shopping
  • you should get your kids out of the car at the petrol station when you go and pay in case a lorry crashes into your car or the petrol station explodes
  • parent and toddler parking spaces are the work of the devil
  • No one should have any faults/ vices at all, even though IRL we all do
  • On a thread about reception children at least 50% got exceeding for all of the areas. Most children on MN are exceeding across the board apparently
  • The children are all really super-skinny, I have a DD who is clearly one of the slimmest in her class but she is one of the heavier ones on here with a BMI percentile of about 20.
  • low fat diets are bad. So obviously we should ditch the skinless chicken breast and eat rib roasts instead. Or is this just a misunderstanding of the message that 'low fat ice-cream' is unlikely to be any better for you than the standard... erm let me think.
Glittermakeseverythingbetter · 05/08/2017 12:22

Update: Lady with dodgy leg has moved her car.

Terry moved his van so she can't get back on to our estate. Then he asked me if I'd go on a date with him!!

I said I'm not sure I could ever fall for a man who doesn't take his shoes off in the house, but I was willing to give it a shot if he could help me sort out my makeshift dropped kerb. He said he'd need to cut down the neighbours hedge to make room, but assured me they wouldn't mind, as long as we chucked all the cuttings back over their side. Then he jokingly asked if I wanted to see his penguin bollard. OMG what if he's a secret mumsnetter !
When he picked me up later, his mum was in the van!!!! She looked me up and down and said I wasn't Terrys usual type. She said he'd told her about the Carrots, and wanted to know if I was one of those disgusting, scum of the earth type women, who inflict their views on the poor tortured souls of their children ( i.e. a vegan!).
I said no, but my 3 year old hasn't had his MMR yet...

This, absolutely

Increasinglymiddleaged · 05/08/2017 12:27

Yes I agree with that also bluffin.

I think it also gives us access to different groups of people who otherwise we wouldn't meet. I have become far more open minded because of MN and I have questioned and changed some of my beliefs about things.
