To take 5kg of hand luggage only on beach holiday?

Admit I'm rather tight but I love getting a bargain flight and feel a bit duped (never flown with this one before..just assumed 10kg). £75 to add in hold now.

Anyway I also love a challenge. Is it do-able?

I always put lots in hand luggage. This year it was evening sandals, change of clothes, books etc, and I always put my underwear in hand luggage after a sever mess up with long haul flights.

I could do just hand luggage, if I need to.

Didn't think of getting Boots delivery at tge airport, that's genius Grin

TestTubeTeen · 04/08/2017 21:01

Check in on line, get your boarding card printed at home, and you won't need to go anywhere near check-in and weighing!

100ml in the little travel bottles is more than enough shampoo / conditioner for two weeks, let alone 1.
Take a cotton sarong to lie on on beach, tiny flannel to dry off with: no towel needed.

Have flown with Thomson a few times, most recently last summer and they are very strict with the hand luggage. They always weigh hand luggage without fail. I got caught out coming back as my wet swimwear and towel (night flight, lounged by pool until we left for airport) weighed more and put me over. Got charged a ridiculous amount.

TestTubeTeen · 04/08/2017 21:09

Oh, sorry, have seen that Thomson do weigh at the gate Shock

TestTubeTeen · 04/08/2017 21:09

Surely even tne most basic accommodation will supply shower gel?

Hellywelly10 · 04/08/2017 21:19

I do hand luggage only all the time. Primark do 100 ml bottles in a 3 pack for a pound or two. Decathlon do great swimming tools which pack down really small. Toiletries are cheap in Spanish supermarkets. There are also some great fast fashion shops in Spain like lefties. If you need to buy anything out there.

AdoraBell · 04/08/2017 21:32

Thomson didn't weigh our hand luggage in July. I'm not saying the won't weigh your's OP, just none of ours was weighed.

trixymalixy · 04/08/2017 21:36

I went on a tennis holiday to Tenerife with only 5kg luggage.

Don't bother with a suitcase they're too heavy. You need as light a bag as possible.

Wear as much of your clothes as you can.

trixymalixy · 04/08/2017 21:37

I flew with Thomson's, they didn't weigh my hand luggage.

My handbag weight more than 5kg when it needs decluttering I'm on a creative writing masters and multiple notebooks add weight

But I packed 3 weeks to Florida in 15kg with minimal effort. My Dsis and I managed 20kg between us to at least 3 holidays.

But 5kg? my DDs would take that in fluffy toys these days. and what about my notebooks?

But I believe you can do it. Wear layers through check-in (have a bag big enough to strip off and throw layers into once you're clear of the scales). Buy flipflops and toiletries there and leave them behind. Have keys/money and small weighty items in pockets.

I only ever take hand luggage learn to roll your clothes. You also usually have a handbag so in that I put my liquids and straighteners so it's easy to access them at the airport.

I had this issue earlier in the year. We usually fly to tenerife with monarch but needed a slightly later flight so booked via bravofly; flew out with thomson and back with norwegian air. I realised (too late) that thomson's cabin bag weight is 5kg. We only ever travel with hand luggage and 10kg is never a problem but 5kg worried me.

I weighed my case - it was 2.5kg empty so that was already half the allowance. I bought a cabin max rucksack (weighed about 700g) from Amazon, very roomy. Still tight keeping it under 5kg but I managed it, planning wisely. I admit I did wear a bumbag unger my baggy tshirt to travel in with medications, money, phone and charger to lighten the load. I shoved everything in my bag to come back as the Norwegian air allowance is 10kg (flight inexplicably delayed 6 hours though 😈).

I'd say get the lightest bag possible, soft sided rather than hard, look at what you're going to pack, then be brutal and scrap everything you're not totally sure you'll wear or use.

Hellywelly10 · 04/08/2017 22:28

Easy jet allow one bag only. I saw a woman fined £50 for having an additional handbag at the check in desk once. So avoidingredients the check in desk may be a good idea. I met a girl on a flight who always puts her handbag in her duty free carrier bag. Genius!!

Fishbiscuits · 04/08/2017 22:29

I also flew with Thomson in July and we didn't have any of our hand luggage weighed, neither did I see them weigh anyone else's. Doesn't mean yours won't get weighed, but they definitely don't always do it.

poppym12 · 04/08/2017 22:36

I'm flying with easyjet for the first time soon and I've printed boarding passes today - it says an extra small bag is allowed. Is this because I've pre booked a seat? Or have I read it wrong and will get stopped for having a separate handbag?

Hellywelly10 · 04/08/2017 22:59

Oh maybe they have changed the rules about an extra bag. If they have said anything extra small bag is fine then go with their advice not mine.

rightwhine · 04/08/2017 23:56

I think with easier you can have the extra small bag if you've pre booked seats.

rightwhine · 04/08/2017 23:56

Easy jet

melj1213 · 05/08/2017 00:09

With Easyjet if you book upfront seats (So anything in rows 2 to about 7 or 8 and possibly a few rows around the extra legroom emergency exit wing seats iirc) they give you the cabin bag (unlimited weight as long as it is the right size and you can get it into the overhead locker yourself) everyone has & one extra smaller handbag and one bag of duty free

I always book Easyjet upfront as I only ever fly with hand luggage now and having that extra bag is always handy, even just so I can put toiletries, laptop, chargers etc into it so that they are accessible quickly/easily going through security and also anything I want on the plane goes in that bag as it has to go under the seat so accessible without getting up and faffing in the overhead locker

sparklewater · 05/08/2017 03:38

Re Easyjet little bags - no need to be upfront or in certain row etc, you get them as standard :)

They class it as handbag/laptop case size so pretty decent size. Two weeks ago I went on with hand luggage case, change bag for baby and my own oversized handbag (which all squashed under seat in front). Not a problem at all :)

SabineUndine · 05/08/2017 03:49

In the days when hold luggage was free I still used to take hand luggage only. I'd put my books in my handbag though.

fizzytonicplease · 05/08/2017 05:41

Why don't you do a click and collect order for all your toiletries from boots to pick up at the airport, that way it's not part of your allowance. I would buy a beach towel out there.

DeadGood · 05/08/2017 06:49

"Yesterday 01:25 Birdsgottaf1y

I wouldn't do that, because of the liquid allowances, wanting to take straighteners etc, it would spoil my holiday."

Whereas mine would be spoiled at even the thought of using straighteners on holiday!

LoniceraJaponica · 05/08/2017 06:58

Hold luggage is still included with some airlines. Admittedly our holiday is a package one, but it does include hold luggage as did our Virgin holiday last year and Jet2 the year before.

Piggywaspushed · 05/08/2017 07:44

This thread is diverting for me as I started another thread (waves at Barbara) panicking about a 40kg limit for 4 people for hold! (although I don't know why I got told off by some for overpacking as in reality that's 10kg each which is not loads!

I flew Thomson last year. The thing we had was that their (included for us) hold allowance was generous at 23kg each so most package customers didn't need to panic about cabin bag weight.

10kg is easy enough if you are light travellers and don't care about price of toiletries bought elsewhere too much or aren't after a particular kind ( I get fairly low SPF stuff which I can only get online here and have loads of curl hair hair products...)

5 kg though? For a whole holiday? I'm not convinced.

I had 5 kilos for 4 days in chilly Reykjavik : just did it but we were allowed handbags.

Why do people bang on about rolling?? That saves room, not weight! It all still weighs the same!!
