To take 5kg of hand luggage only on beach holiday?

Admit I'm rather tight but I love getting a bargain flight and feel a bit duped (never flown with this one before..just assumed 10kg). £75 to add in hold now.

Anyway I also love a challenge. Is it do-able?

But shoes...what about shoes?

This is what's going to either break the allowance (or not). Wear the heaviest pair and be ruthless-you can probably manage a pair of flip flops and one other pair in your luggage if you're ruthless enough with everything else.

How long are you going for? Before we had children we only ever took hand luggage if we were going for just a week. Lightweight clothes, a few toiletries including Travel Wash for refreshing clothes (used hotel towels, soap, shower gel, etc) 2 x swimmers, 1 x flip flops, a few pairs of undercrackers, small camera, book, sunglasses, passport, tickets, money. You really don't need anything else. So liberating! Out of the airport so quickly!

We have 2 kids now and have to take bulky stuff like nappies, teddies etc. But in our last holiday it was pay per item of hold luggage and we elected to only check in two plus a piece of hand luggage each. Again much easier to manoeuvre through airport than if we had four suitcases plus unruly children Also all fitted everything into one taxi.

Buy a cheap towel there.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 04/08/2017 11:15

5kg is very low are you sure that's right? I always buy big toiletries, travel wash and family sized stuff airside.

I did a long weekend with a Waitrose canvas shopper once including hair straighteners. It was fine.

Pack flip flops, wear trainers and take one pair of evening shoes. Pack a fold up back too for carrying any duty free/moving things around a bit once on the plane and putting your jacket/rain coat in.

Take a rain coat with deep pockets with button/popper (you'll need it for this end!) and fill with knickers and other small items of clothing if you get desperate.

2 x swimwear
Pool cover up if you want
2 x vest tops
Pair of shorts
T-shirt
Jersey dress that can be dressed up or down
Second dress
Skirt
Phone charger
Sandals
Flip flops
Knickers

Wear nude bra, long trousers/jeans for travelling.

Hand wash knickers, vest tops and swimwear while you're there.

Thanks for the thread btw OP. I'm currently looking at Mallorca in October as it happens and there are some very cheap flights with Monarch, who I haven't flown with for a while.

We need hold bags as we are taking scuba diving equipment, but if the carry on allowance is less than the normal 10 kg, we may need an extra hold bag too - so your thread has reminded me to check.

If I were you I'd try a dummy run of packing before making the final decision. Don't forget the weight of your phone and charger and books/kindle if you also take that sort of thing.

melj1213 · 04/08/2017 11:21

Melj..Thompson have this stichted up! T&C says duty free has to fit in hand luggage and apparently they are strict and do weigh and check

Wow they really are restrictive! I fly with Easyjet a lot and even they let you have hand luggage + one bag of duty free, and they are really strict on the "one item of hand luggage only" policy!

If my bag was 5kg then I'd be pissed to find that I couldn't buy a magazine & drink for the flight because then my bag would be overweight, when even budget airlines allow you that small concession! Also I'd hate that I couldn't even buy a couple of souvenirs etc on the way home because I couldn't risk my bag being overweight!

We use our phones as kindle..so just need charger, adaptor & small headphones...I'm going to get a bum bag for these! His n hers onesBlush

I know, this is why I feel duped. I could have paid a bit more for ryanair. They are trying to make it not doable. In reality they want another 140 (70x ) form usAngry

I'll get a magazine and a mini wine though...I'll stick it down my trousers or summat!

We have just flown Ryanair for a 12 day holiday, family of 4 including 2 DCs. We only took hand luggage. Found it surprisingly easy to pack but would definitely have weighed more than 5 kilo per bag. We managed to fit in beach towels. For shoes we all wore trainers (had to bring them as some of our day trips included long walks) and packed 1 pair of sandals & 1 pair of flip flops each. Packed 2 books each & even our snorkelling gear. I brought minimal make-up through clear plastic bag at security: powder, blusher, liquid eyeliner, mascara & lipstick. Bought toothpaste, sun cream & deodorant at the airport. Hand soap & shampoo provided at the apartment we've rented.

£70 x 2

Doobigetta · 04/08/2017 11:26

You'll have to buy suncream there, and possibly shampoo, conditioner and shower gel. Everything else you can probably fit in, if you're ruthless.

Contactlass · 04/08/2017 11:29

I think with toiletries..we'll take a mini clear bag each with as much as pos and have this in our pockets

OP posts:
BarbaraofSeville · 04/08/2017 11:29

If you can't manage it, could you just pay for one hold bag between the two of you? Is that the £70?

I understand how you feel duped, but managing with that little amount of luggage maybe a real struggle, especially if it's a male partner you're travelling with. Man clothes and shoes can weigh loads more than women's for a hot weather holiday.

Contactlass · 04/08/2017 11:31

Dh has just agreed he will carry any shoes I need in his bag!!

Str4ngedaysindeed · 04/08/2017 11:31

OP posts:
Str4ngedaysindeed · 04/08/2017 11:32

Oops. Always managed to get everything in including sunscreen, toiletries etc. It's a matter of just decanting eventing into the clear bottles and sharing it out between cases

Contactlass · 04/08/2017 11:33

Me too Strangedays.....but 5kg? I weighed my cycling rucksack that this morning that I take to work each day and it was 6.5!

OP posts:
BarbaraofSeville · 04/08/2017 11:33

Thinking about it, I'd probably use at least two full bottles of suncream on a week's hot weather holiday, possibly more. I buy it from Asda or Aldi at home for a couple of quid a bottle.

If I had to pay Boots or resort prices it can be loads more than that, so it's starting to make the £70 hold bag look a lot less expensive and you would be able to take as much sunscreen and clothes as you need plus anything else - do you really use your phone as a kindle? That doesn't sound very relaxing and is it even possible in bright sunlight?

Penny4UrThoughts · 04/08/2017 11:35

I've never been aware of hand luggage being weighed. Well, not for years.

RoganJosh · 04/08/2017 11:36

You're right, Barbara , I think it's more about size than weight.
