To be really pissed off at this restaurant??

Booked a meal this afternoon in London for for 9 at 1pm. A restaurant a few people recommended to us and that friends we are staying with have been to and said was very good. We expected the price to be pretty high a) it's central London b) it has a good reputation

There was an office party of some sort in there- about 10 of them.

Anyway we had our meal and the bill came. There were 8 adults (My friends and their 2 adult children, DSDs, Me and DH) and 3 year old DD.

I looked at the bill at thought it was quite high. I offered to pay as we are staying with our friends and they took me and DH for dinner in Tuesday night but friends insisted on paying half and after tooing and froing we OKd it

Friend noticed we had been given the wrong bill after again noticing the price seemed a little high.

We were given the bill for the other group. Waitress and manager told us that we couldn't pay our own bill as it was already paid for and all they could do was give us a print out of a receipt.

DH said we wouldn't be paying and the manager threatened to call the police so I paid to keep the peace and because DD was getting upset. They have given us a gift voucher for the difference but I'm still pretty pissed off

That's just bonkers! I can't believe you would actually pay someone else's more expensive bill. What was the difference in price? The other table must have been laughing all the way out the door if they'd noticed.

You're a fool for knowingly paying for something you didn't have. Your behaviour is pretty odd.

yummycake123 · 04/08/2017 08:36

Is this real? Why did you pay??
They can easily generate a new bill, you just tell them what you had and they create a new bill..
I don't think there's anything you can do now; but next time it happens stand your ground and don't pay a bill that isn't yours!! Shock

Toysintheattic29 · 04/08/2017 08:37

What kind of restaurant is that?? I'd take it up with Trading Standards - they are usually quite helpful, or the CAB whom you can contact online....

You are such a door mat. Who on earth does this apart from OP. If I did that my DP would be raging at me and vice versa.

Gooseberrycrumble4 · 04/08/2017 08:38

That's their loss and their problem to rectify. The establishment can't legally charge you for food you haven't eaten. The police would have laughed in their faces.

Gooseberrycrumble4 · 04/08/2017 08:39

What would the police charge you with? Theft of food you haven't eaten?!

Gooseberrycrumble4 · 04/08/2017 08:41

I'd tell them that they need to give you the cash due today or you will be reviewing the establishments on twitter and trip adviser and giving full details of what happened and how badly you were treated.

Gooseberrycrumble4 · 04/08/2017 08:41

Then trading standards yes

I don't do confrontation at all but I would have sent my dd & dh to wait outside whilst they called the police or refunded the difference. If they made a huge fuss then I would expect compensation on top. That is absolutely disgusting behaviour from the restaurant.
I am loathe to believe it though because I eat out a lot and most restaurants fall over backwards to help you. One place I went to refunded the whole meal because my dh didn't get his meal until after we had all eaten.

AnnetteCurtains · 04/08/2017 09:15

What a brilliant way to scam up your wages
Wonder how many times a day they try this

diddl · 04/08/2017 09:15

Surely as it stood your table's bill had been paid & you could all have walked out-let alone paying someone elses higher bill!

You paid a bill of a party of 10 because the restaurant told you to?
WHY?! Confused
Good grief. Putting aside you must be bloody loaded to just happily do that for a quiet life, as a non confrontational person that's insanely wet even for me!
I'd have let them call the police. You'd done nothing wrong. THEY had!

I'm a right pushover but even I would have refused to pay the bill and let them call the police! Outrageous! Why on earth did you pay.

Not sure what MNHQs message means? They seem to be allowing troll hunting on the thread.

Happyeverafter73 · 04/08/2017 12:52

Which message is that Pelorus? I can't see any individual message from MNHQ apart from the deletions for breaking talk rules

dontslouchdarling · 04/08/2017 13:03

That's outrageous! Bloody hell.

RevRichardWayneGaryWayne · 04/08/2017 14:18

You were unreasonable not to pay by cheque, so everyone could tell you to cancel it!

This kinda happened to us once. We were at restaurant and hear the waitress say to the table next to us "Oh no, you've just paid their bill" Gesturing to us. We said "Thanks very much" Grin - Then we just sorted it out amongst ourselves!
