To be really pissed off at this restaurant??

Booked a meal this afternoon in London for for 9 at 1pm. A restaurant a few people recommended to us and that friends we are staying with have been to and said was very good. We expected the price to be pretty high a) it's central London b) it has a good reputation

There was an office party of some sort in there- about 10 of them.

Anyway we had our meal and the bill came. There were 8 adults (My friends and their 2 adult children, DSDs, Me and DH) and 3 year old DD.

I looked at the bill at thought it was quite high. I offered to pay as we are staying with our friends and they took me and DH for dinner in Tuesday night but friends insisted on paying half and after tooing and froing we OKd it

Friend noticed we had been given the wrong bill after again noticing the price seemed a little high.

We were given the bill for the other group. Waitress and manager told us that we couldn't pay our own bill as it was already paid for and all they could do was give us a print out of a receipt.

DH said we wouldn't be paying and the manager threatened to call the police so I paid to keep the peace and because DD was getting upset. They have given us a gift voucher for the difference but I'm still pretty pissed off

I'd be wanting cold hard cash!

cardibach · 03/08/2017 20:36

The restaurant WBU to expect you to pay a higher bill than your own.
YWBVVU to pay it. No need for peace keeping. They were in the wrong. Just state quietly and repeatedly like a broken record that you would only pay your own bill. Any problems with the computer system/till are theirs to sort out.

Hallomiaddicted · 03/08/2017 20:37

Name and Shame the restaurant !!!!!

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 03/08/2017 20:37

So was the mistake only noticed after your card had been debited?

Marymoosmum14 · 03/08/2017 20:39

I would have let them call the police robbing bastards! It is their cock up not yours.

sooperdooper · 03/08/2017 20:40

Why on earth did you agree to it though? I think you should all learn to be more assertive, the restaurant were bonkers to even suggest you pay the other bill

Nofunkingworriesmate · 03/08/2017 20:40

What sort of wusses are you to to pay ???
They accepted the mix up, it's not like you " forgot" you had drunk 5 bottles of wine
I don't believe this

Alicia555 · 03/08/2017 20:40

Which restaurant op? Make sure they don't get any of our business, cheeky fucks

Redglitter · 03/08/2017 20:41

What on earth possessed you to pay the other bill. That's just madness. I'd have let them cause any grief they wanted. I'd love to have seen them explain that to the police.

These people want to pay their bill but we want them to pay another much higher bill because we screwed up.

You do ofcourse only have their word that the other party paid the wrong amoun. Could be a nice wee scam they have going on

Redglitter · 03/08/2017 20:42

I'd also be contacting their head office or owner

Catsize · 03/08/2017 20:42

Imagine this scenario in the purchase of goods. Utter madness. Tripadvisor is your friend.

TealStar · 03/08/2017 20:43

Wow - I can't believe you let them take advantage of you like that! I would have very happily sat there and waited to explain it all to the police. In fact, it should have been you calling them!

MadMags · 03/08/2017 20:43

You were absolutely mad to pay.

Do a Sad Face name and shame for a fee.

I would have happily sat there until they called the police.

Nellysmagichat · 03/08/2017 20:44

DH said we wouldn't be paying and the manager threatened to call the police so I paid to keep the peace and because DD was getting upset.

You paid someone else's bill, even though it was more expensive than the meal you had eaten, and the restaurant said you had to do this or they'd call the police? That's what happened? Hmm

QueenArnica · 03/08/2017 20:46

Why on earth did you pay it? Ridiculous behaviour, sorry OP! There's non confrontational and then there's total and utter pushover.

honeysucklejasmine · 03/08/2017 20:46

What?! I would have paid the amount of my bill and not a penny more. Cheeky fuckers!

saleorbouy · 03/08/2017 20:46

Your bill is the contact of sale.... hard luck for them if they can't manage the paper work. Since your bill had been settled then they really don't have much leverage to make you pay. I'd have waited for the police you would certainly have the high ground in law and the management would be unlikely to want a scene. As for paying the other larger bill you're insane. Write to the management demand your money back with an apology for being forced into the uncomfortable position by their error.

MandateMandy · 03/08/2017 20:47

Why would you pay someone else's bill. Of course you should have let them call the police. I would have been tempted to call the police myself and explain that the manager of the restaurant was attempting to steal/extort money from you.

Get back on the phone to them and tell them you want those vouchers transferred into cash or you are going to the police. Then get on trip advisor and review their arses off!

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 03/08/2017 20:47

I hate scenes too but this is insane. Your dh should have let you take dd out while he stayed to sort it.
You need to get back in touch with the restaurant and say you felt unfairly pressured by their threatening to call the police and a gift voucher is not acceptable. Give them another chance to sort it out and if they won't, name and shame, in case it really is a scam.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 03/08/2017 20:48

I can't understand why you paid someone else's bill

MandateMandy · 03/08/2017 20:49

...and get the restaurant to tell you what company the work lunch came from. A wee ring to their HR department would also be in order. In some places I've worked in an employees conduct during a work night out is regarded as conduct at work. Or they might just want to do the right thing.

Allthewaves · 03/08/2017 20:49

no way would i have paid - they made the mess. Do they have facebook and twitter - i'd be commenting loudly

Alpacaandgo · 03/08/2017 20:49

No way would I have paid someone else's bill. It was their error not yours, meaning they lose out not you! They should not have bullied you into paying another tables more expensive bill!

What restaurant was it, so we can all avoid it!

jackpommery · 03/08/2017 20:50

You paid??! Why?

elfies · 03/08/2017 20:51

No way should you have paid , and you should have been repaid in cash not vouchers with a complementary bottle of something for your inconvenience too
