To be really pissed off at this restaurant??

Booked a meal this afternoon in London for for 9 at 1pm. A restaurant a few people recommended to us and that friends we are staying with have been to and said was very good. We expected the price to be pretty high a) it's central London b) it has a good reputation

There was an office party of some sort in there- about 10 of them.

Anyway we had our meal and the bill came. There were 8 adults (My friends and their 2 adult children, DSDs, Me and DH) and 3 year old DD.

I looked at the bill at thought it was quite high. I offered to pay as we are staying with our friends and they took me and DH for dinner in Tuesday night but friends insisted on paying half and after tooing and froing we OKd it

Friend noticed we had been given the wrong bill after again noticing the price seemed a little high.

We were given the bill for the other group. Waitress and manager told us that we couldn't pay our own bill as it was already paid for and all they could do was give us a print out of a receipt.

DH said we wouldn't be paying and the manager threatened to call the police so I paid to keep the peace and because DD was getting upset. They have given us a gift voucher for the difference but I'm still pretty pissed off

You should have told them to please call the police. Shocking that you paid

HolidayTimeAgain · 03/08/2017 20:52

Why on earth did you PAY more that you owed???? You should have paid what you owed and not a penny more, the police would have done nothing you should have let them call. Terrible customer service from the restaurant but you allowed them to overcharge you and accepted a voucher?????

CaptainHammer · 03/08/2017 20:53

They were unreasonable to ask you to pay it but so were you by actually agreeing and pay the extra!

WineAndTiramisu · 03/08/2017 20:53

I'm amazed your actually paid someone else's bill which was higher than yours! I'd have called the police myself at that point...

Ring and speak to the manager, if it's not refunded in cash, tell them you will be going to the police.

BarbaraBitchFace · 03/08/2017 20:53

I can't believe you paid it! Why?!

Blondielongie · 03/08/2017 20:54

OP, call head office. This is a common mistake in restaurants, but it is possible to bring up the order again on the til. I'm assuming the manager was just an MOD or a supervisor who was new and panicked. No excuse though. I'd expect an apology and a full refund!

Was it a chain restaurant?

VelvetSpoon · 03/08/2017 20:54

Jesus Christ OP, you really should have grown some balls and refused. Or let your DH handle it.

Can't believe you allowed yourself to be ripped off like this, and overruled your DH who was right to refuse. What on earth did you think the police would do?!

bimbobaggins · 03/08/2017 20:54

Op are you coming back to the thread to answer the many questions about why you paid this bill. What sort of pushovers are you that you would think doing this was the way to go. Your dd was getting upset but someone could have taken her outside.
I'd quite happily have waited for the police, and hopefully they'd do the restaurant for daylight robbery

emilybrontescorset · 03/08/2017 20:54

Yes the restaurant was unreasonable.

foodiefil · 03/08/2017 20:54

Ridiculous!!! Name them!

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 03/08/2017 20:55

Mistakes can happen but you're daft to just roll over and take it.

foodiefil · 03/08/2017 20:56

I'd have waited for the police. It's a civil matter. You weren't leaving without paying you were leaving without paying some bugger else's. Total ludicrous

XiCi · 03/08/2017 20:56

I can't believe anyone would pay for someone else's meal. You need to get on the phone to them because they have basically stolen from you. Unbelievable.
Is it a chain restaurant?

Nellysmagichat · 03/08/2017 20:56

So, I started off shocked that anyone would willingly pay a bill that wasn't theirs, and finding it highly unlikely that the restaurant said you had to do this or they'd call the police.

Now I'm more in shock that you'd sit and eat a nice lunch with your 'D'H after he threw his own daughter out of the house and called the police on you, and you were sure your marriage was over.

Odd Confused

Figgygal · 03/08/2017 20:57

Of course they should have called the police!! They had no leg to stand on

Utter madness you paid that

AnneElliott · 03/08/2017 20:57

I had this once in a petrol station. Lady had paid my (cheaper) petrol by mistake. They wanted me to pay her bill as "their system didn't allow them to charge a different amount to the pump".

I suggested they call the police and settled down to wait. They suddenly found a way of accepting my lower payment.

Bluntness100 · 03/08/2017 20:57

That's shocking, I'd have let them call rhe police. They can't force you to pay another tables bill because they made a mistake.

Blondielongie · 03/08/2017 20:58

Waitress and manager told us that we couldn't pay our own bill as it was already paid for and all they could do was give us a print out of a receipt.

Actually - does this mean they could just give you receipt of your own bill to look at for the price?

DailyMailReadersAreThick · 03/08/2017 21:00

You paid them??

YABU.

sleepykidsplease · 03/08/2017 21:02

That's ridiculous. You should have let them call the police-whom I imagine have considerably better things to do than deal with a manager and waiting staff who are incapable of managing. Twitter, Facebook and TripAdvisor are your friends in this instance. Shame them, they have treated paying customers appallingly. Just for context I'm a manager in the hospitality industry and I would be appalled if a customer of mine was treated in this manner.

MoveOnTheCards · 03/08/2017 21:03

What a piss take! Why on earth did you pay for their higher bill?! Confused. I bet in hindsight you wish you'd let them 'call the police'.

Instead yy to getting in touch with their head office or GM. Which restaurant was it, btw? I'm staggered they even came up with that batshit 'solution' to their shit service!

glitterlips1 · 03/08/2017 21:03

Why did you pay? It was their mistake and not down to you to pay for some other groups meal! I would have let them call the police!

bimbobaggins · 03/08/2017 21:03

Nelly does that have any relevance to this thread.

GimbleInTheWabe · 03/08/2017 21:08

Eh?! I'm with everyone else here. Why the shit biscuits did you agree to pay their bill? It was totally their error and not yours that they messed up with the other table.

I'm shocked that A. They expected you to cover the other table's bill (obviously trying to do it stealthily by giving you their bill and not declaring it was incorrect) and B. That you actually paid another, more expensive tables bill.

Name and shame them and demand a reimbursement from the manager/owner as that was some shitty shitty service you got there.

kissmethere · 03/08/2017 21:08

Its outrageous that they expected you to pay and outrageous that you did pay.
Name and shame. Seriously that is unbelievable.
