Fool that I am, I chose AIBU for my first post. Eek! Here goes.

15 years ago we moved into our beautiful home. In the downstairs room (family room I guess) there is a large walk-in closet. In the back of that closet, to the right, there is another smaller closet, without a door. The bottom 3 feet is raised, and carpeted, oddly. Hardwood floors everywhere but there. DH poked around, and lo and behold: the raised floor (I shall draw a diagram if I this thread gets any interest - I know it is a prerequisite in circumstances such as these) lifts up! It is a carpet covered fake floor covering A LOCKED SAFE. A rather large, locked safe. Locked tight. It is built into the cupboard.

So here's my AIBU. Is it unreasonable to spend $500 or so to have a locksmith come crack it? We are preparing to sell up, and could find lots of other things to do with that money. We could leave it for the new owners to open, but where is the fun in that? On the other hand, what if it has even one thing of wonder (or value) locked inside?

Would you crack it?

Wou ld you take bets on what lives inside?

6pm?! I'm going out at 6:30pm. Envy

I don't care if the safe is empty, just having it opened will make up for the disappointment of the Victorian safe thread.

It is a very foggy day here

It's always bl**dy foggy in SF!!! I can't tell you how many times I've been to see that blasted bridge you're supposed to have and it's been invisible ... reckon it's all a scam to get folk there, personally Wink Grin

AcrossthePond55 · 09/08/2017 16:31

If I'd known, I'd have rearranged DS2's schedule. Hell, I'd have shown up with the whole fam damnly and our lawn chairs to sit and watch.

Of course, we would have brought Cake and Wine.

DooRight · 09/08/2017 16:32

I left an unwanted safe behind at my old house. I wonder if said safe will have a locked safe thread of it's own one day? I didn't leave anything in it. Feeling a bit mean now that I didn't leave some toenail clippings wrapped in a treasure map for future safe crackers to ponder.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 09/08/2017 16:36

2017SoFarSoGood A pal's just raised an interesting point: these Russians who lived there before you - were they young folk or perhaps seniors who'd passed so the house had to be sold?

It's just that a young family might have been expected to clear the safe before they left, whereas if it was a senior, could it be that the remaining family might not have even known about it ...?

SleepingStandingUp · 09/08/2017 16:38

Oooh thought I'd missed ot

2017SoFarSoGood · 09/08/2017 16:44

The people we bought from had the house for three years then went broke. The people before them had it for 35 years so who knows.

Doesn'tknowtheexciyementhecausedDH is calmly going about his business. I'm beginning to think perhaps it's a sign.
