Fool that I am, I chose AIBU for my first post. Eek! Here goes.

15 years ago we moved into our beautiful home. In the downstairs room (family room I guess) there is a large walk-in closet. In the back of that closet, to the right, there is another smaller closet, without a door. The bottom 3 feet is raised, and carpeted, oddly. Hardwood floors everywhere but there. DH poked around, and lo and behold: the raised floor (I shall draw a diagram if I this thread gets any interest - I know it is a prerequisite in circumstances such as these) lifts up! It is a carpet covered fake floor covering A LOCKED SAFE. A rather large, locked safe. Locked tight. It is built into the cupboard.

So here's my AIBU. Is it unreasonable to spend $500 or so to have a locksmith come crack it? We are preparing to sell up, and could find lots of other things to do with that money. We could leave it for the new owners to open, but where is the fun in that? On the other hand, what if it has even one thing of wonder (or value) locked inside?

Would you crack it?

Wou ld you take bets on what lives inside?

LookMoreCloselier · 06/08/2017 22:34

Let's face it, if you had anything valuable in your safe, you would remove it before selling the house? You would also think it would be left open though in that case. Therefore I think it will be empty but still hoping there is something in it. Will check in Wednesday Grin

PaperdollCartoon · 06/08/2017 23:09

Fucking fuck safe sake!!

I'll be back on Wednesday but until then does anyone have anyone have any brain bleach so I can try and forget about this?

Funko · 07/08/2017 20:01

I think you should open it, retrieve the treasure, close and lock it again, hide it and make no mention of it to the new owners.

Then we can enjoy it all over again if new owner is a mumsnetter Grin

Funko · 07/08/2017 20:02

IN FACT!

You should write this thread link on a scrap of paper and leave it in the safe for new owner!

2017SoFarSoGood · 07/08/2017 21:00

So Wednesday, 10:00 a.m. $380 which is actually way less than I would have expected it to cost, and frankly would have paid.

Just been offered tomorrow morning for $585, which sesems a wee bit cheeky. Perhaps someone has access to this thread. Or knows I have no patience. MoneygrubbinggreedybastardDH thinks that is just ridiculous, so I'm guessing I'll just take three sleeping pills and set my alarm for 45 hours from now. I did think of requesting a 25% discount if I promise to shut the safe again and only leave his contact information taped to the outside. A perpetual revenue stream, this safe.

You would have to leave something really weird and obscure in the safe for the next person.
