Diet Coke for children at 6.30?

Currently in airport lounge with dd1 (6) and dd2 (9) and dh. Dh took girls to get a drink (I was thinking milk, tea, water, juice) and he can back with Diet Coke for them. It's 6.30 FFS. I expressed my surprise at the choice of drink, he got huffy. Then dd2 asked if she could get some fruit and natural yoghurt and he said 'No, you've had enough now!'

WTF. At least that's a healthy choice! Been up for hours and will have no chance to recover before meeting up with dh's family so probably just tired and cranky but this just doesn't make sense to me. They have only had Coke recently (not given by me but at parties etc) and I don't want it to seem as though it's ok to have it whenever they see it!

At least they'll be hydrated for the flight.

redrobinblue · 31/07/2017 08:34

@Lules was about to say the exact same thing! It's not a holiday without a 5am fry up and a pint!

HipsterHunter · 31/07/2017 08:37

If adults can have a breakfast beer then children can have a breakfast coke :-)

They might need it after an early get up!

Miserylovescompany2 · 31/07/2017 08:41

My good God! I hope he's hanging his head in shame for the entirety off that flight - diet coke at 6:30am? That man should be shot!

Worry not, OP, you just sit back and enjoy a magical cup of tea - it fixes everything Grin

youarenotkiddingme · 31/07/2017 09:02

Ds and I have a 7am fight in a few weeks.

At the airport we will head to costa. I can almost garuntee he'll ask for a lemonade and chocolate muffin! It's what he always has when we go.
If it keeps him quiet at 5.30am there'll be no arguments from me Grin

We will then buy a meal deal from smiths for the plane/breakfast. It'll be sandwich/snack/soft drink.

We won't get a proper meal until that evening and I know I'll be grateful for some salad and protein by then!

honeylulu · 31/07/2017 09:08

I wouldn't be bothered. I restrict fizzy drinks at home and would never allow them for breakfast but on holiday all bets are off. Me and H will usually have a g&t on the plane, whatever time it is!

A lot of the young folk at work often come in first thing chugging a can of coke. I remarked once how revolting it was. My boss pointed out that loads of people stop at Costa, Nero etc to get a caffeinenated, sweetened beverage in the morning. It's called coffee ...

TeachesOfPeaches · 31/07/2017 09:32

Did the children specifically request natural yogurt or just yogurt?

Picklesandpies · 31/07/2017 09:51

Teachesofpeaches They asked for natural yoghurt as that was next to the fruit salad. But we have it at home quite a lot anyway so they are used to it.

Probably need to chill out a bit. It's not about them having a bit of Diet Coke - it's more about setting expectations for me as they will expect it more if it's given willy nilly.

I wouldn't worry! In an airport anything goes! Holiday spirit etc.... fun! etc.... school holidays etc... don't worry about it! ... you can get them back to healthy patterns after the holidays (or when you get home!) the most important thing for your kids health at the mo is that you and hubby manage to keep the stress levels under control! and try and relax!! (easier said than done, I appreciate!!) Smile

KoolKoala07 · 31/07/2017 10:19

It's a coke not a g&t.

PsychoPumpkin · 31/07/2017 10:48

I'm not going to take the piss OP, airport or not I'm likely to choose something 'breakfasty' for the kids at that time of the morning so Coke would seem like an odd choice to me, and this is coming from someone who will give my 7 year old the odd fizzy drink when out to dinner or at the cinema.

I would shrug the Coke off, let them have the fruit & enjoy the holiday though. Have fun!

SafeToCross · 31/07/2017 11:00

My DH's idea of a healthy choice is pretty dubious, but Tbh sometimes I just want someone else to make a decision (so worn out from being 'in charge' of everything since having dc).

MsGameandWatching · 31/07/2017 11:38

I see where you're coming from actually. I travel regularly with my children and it's no drinks with caffeine in after 17.00 pm as there will be no hope whatsoever of them catching some sleep on the plane. I'm the least precious parent you can imagine but that's an iron rule as my children are impossible if they don't get enough sleep. They're older kids as well but this rule will continue for as long as I can make it happen.

Mittens1969 · 31/07/2017 11:56

Oh well, it's holiday time so as a one-off won't hurt! As long as they don't drink it every day on holiday, they'll be very hard to manage!

I'm glad my DDs don't like fizzy drinks, though, it makes our lives easier lol.

OuchLegoHurts · 31/07/2017 12:34

SERIOUSLY?? Calm down. Go on holidays. Try not to freak out over giving your child holiday treats. Try to enjoy.

ToughNorthernLass · 31/07/2017 12:48

At first I thought 6.30pm, well that's ok. But 6.30am, no way, even on holiday. I couldn't even imagine drinking a fizzy drink at that time, yuk!

anchor9 · 31/07/2017 13:10

pretty sure DC has less caffeine than tea... 30mg in a can, tea is ~70mg. if i recall correctly have not fact checked. obv bad sweeteners too but it's not every day is it...

llangennith · 31/07/2017 13:14

YANBU at all! Hope you had a good flight. When you have a quiet moment with your DH make it plain that any fizzy drink is not an option. And make sure the DC know it too.

saltandvinegarcrisps1 · 31/07/2017 13:14

youarenotkiddingme - Ds and I have a 7am fight in a few weeks.
I'm impressed that you schedule your fall outs - mine tend to happen spontaneously!!! Grin Grin Grin

PoppyPopcorn · 31/07/2017 13:15

This is not something I would get my knickers in a knot about. One off, special airport treat. Big deal. Every day at 6.30am is a different matter.

Picklesandpies · 31/07/2017 17:52

I would have given dd decaffinated tea Smile

Thanks for the opinions though - very interesting!

Wouldn't personally give kids coke and diet coke is what my sister and I call a chemical shitstorm. Horses and courses but let the kids eat if they haven't had much else.

IrritatedUser1960 · 31/07/2017 22:01

I'd have had several gins by now, it's the only way I can get on a plane Grin

VladmirsPoutine · 31/07/2017 22:05

Normal times don't apply in airports. It's why you can have a pint with your breakfast.

Truer words have never been spoken on these boards.

SolomanDaisy · 31/07/2017 22:11

I think this is the first food thread where I've been able to feel I'm towards the superior/smug commenter end. It hasn't occurred to me that young kids can have Diet Coke! Mine don't sleep enough anyway without risking any additional caffeine.
