Diet Coke for children at 6.30?

Picklesandpies · 31/07/2017 06:53

Currently in airport lounge with dd1 (6) and dd2 (9) and dh. Dh took girls to get a drink (I was thinking milk, tea, water, juice) and he can back with Diet Coke for them. It's 6.30 FFS. I expressed my surprise at the choice of drink, he got huffy. Then dd2 asked if she could get some fruit and natural yoghurt and he said 'No, you've had enough now!'

WTF. At least that's a healthy choice! Been up for hours and will have no chance to recover before meeting up with dh's family so probably just tired and cranky but this just doesn't make sense to me. They have only had Coke recently (not given by me but at parties etc) and I don't want it to seem as though it's ok to have it whenever they see it!

The other parent chose a drink you don't like. The other parent. It wouldn't have been my choice, but hey ho. Perhaps a treat as they are on holiday. Did you really think 'oh diet coke at 6.30am when we are hols and we've been up since 3 - must tell Mumsnet'?

Fwiw i find coke vile in all forms. Much more of a lemon Fanta woman Grin 5yo son hates anything fizzy- win-win!

It's start of your holiday let the kids have what they want and a glass of coke is no biggy . Have a great holiday (I'm jealous not had a holiday for 5 years)

chocatoo · 31/07/2017 07:34

I'd be more worried about a fizzy drink and travel sickness. Would have avoided for that reason.

guestofclanmackenzie · 31/07/2017 07:35

Good god I'm glad I'm not going on holiday with you!

Poor kids! The airport is the start of the holiday in our house so whilst I wouldn't normally be happy with Diet Coke so early in the morning, I would have let it go due to the excitement and being in the holiday spirit! Which obviously doesn't apply to you.

upperlimit · 31/07/2017 07:35

Unclench. Enjoy your holiday.

Airports are not real life.
Just go within it.
Normal Service will be resumed once you are home again.

Picklesandpies · 31/07/2017 07:41

Elquinto It wasn't the first thing I thought, no but girls busy with sticker books and dh on phone so thought I'd get some opinions. There's a lot of things on AIBU that you wouldn't discuss in real life as it would seem so trivial Grin

And I don't think there's anything inherently middle class about wanting to encourage healthy eating habits in your children. And as for the natural yoghurt - dd has coeliac disease so we do tend to eat quite healthily at home - but she doesn't like quinoa!

All is well now anyway. Just not looking forward to the numerous trips to the loo on the plane (some from me no doubt!) Wink

Picklesandpies · 31/07/2017 07:45

Not a misery at all - just trying to form healthy habits. And I don't resent dh making decisions! I guess everyone parents differently - even within a marriage.

very strange that you think fruit and natural yoghurt is inherently healthier than diet cok

Picklesandpies · 31/07/2017 07:48

I don't think it's 'inherently healthier' - I understand that fruit has sugar - but it's as a nine year old it would seem that was a healthy choice compared to a fizzy drink.

Petalbird · 31/07/2017 07:54

It's the start to the holiday DSC had crisps, sweets, chocolate and lemonade on the plane (something they normally don't get all in 1 sitting but it's holidays). If you really don't like his food choices make sure you pack snacks before and buy water

ConstanceCraving · 31/07/2017 07:58

It's a bit of a weird choice for that time of day and I probably would have raised an eyebrow if DH had bought it.

Chill and enjoy your holiday Smile

AwaywiththePixies27 · 31/07/2017 08:01

Your DH is probably as tired and cranky as you are OP! So it sounds like he's picking his battles. You've all been awake ages. It's once in a blue moon, no harm done and they've probably ate/drank worse that you haven't known about.

Butterymuffin · 31/07/2017 08:02

Oh let's not have this 'diet coke is just as nutritionally valuable as fruit' bollocks, please. Only on Mumsnet.

I wouldn't be happy with this either OP. Is it out of character for him? Also I'd have gone back and got her fruit and yogurt. Perfectly reasonable request and his response to that was crap.

AwaywiththePixies27 · 31/07/2017 08:04

Must have missed where that was said! Confused of course it isn't. But it's not like OPs DH gives it them for breakfast every day is it?

BarbaraofSeville · 31/07/2017 08:04

Normal times don't apply in airports. It's why you can have a pint with your breakfast

^^ This. Once you get to the airport and through security all food/drinks norms are off. I wouldn't want alcohol at 6 am but from about 9/10 I'm definitely having a pint with my breakfast.

very strange that you think fruit and natural yoghurt is inherently healthier than diet cok I don't know about diet coke, but unless the cereal was porridge or unsweetened museli, that's a strange thing to give them if you are one for healthy eating.

Relax, you're on holiday. A fortnight of diet coke, chips and ice creams won't kill them.

AwaywiththePixies27 · 31/07/2017 08:05

Aah. Crossed posts with that post butterymuffin. Apologies. Brew

Seenoevil · 31/07/2017 08:06

Your at the airport and worrying about Diet Coke... If they would of come back with a red bull then I could see what you mean but it's Diet Coke. Chill out

coddiwomple · 31/07/2017 08:06

It's an odd choice, but why not for once.

I would be a lot more annoyed about the "diet" version, which is even worst than the full sugar one, I don't like to give my own kids splenda or aspartm crap

Not worth starting an argument with DH, most fruit juice you find in airport are just awful anyway and of no healthy benefit whatsoever.

I would also ignore that very strange comment very strange that you think fruit and natural yoghurt is inherently healthier than diet cok Hmm

Enjoy your holiday!

AwaywiththePixies27 · 31/07/2017 08:07

To be honest OP. I'm just impressed one of your kids asked for fruit & natural yoghurt! Grin

Mine will ear fruit by the bucketload but natural yoghurt is akin to eating satans tonsils.

metalmum15 · 31/07/2017 08:15

Presumably you're off on holiday? We have no food rules when we're away, kids can eat and drink whatever shit they like. Dh & I spend all day eating crap and drinking alcohol so it's pretty hypocritical to make the kids eat healthily. A week of coke won't kill them.
