Benefit bashing

LovelyBath77 · 29/07/2017 20:50

To think MN can be a bit benefit bashing at times. Even if people are rightfully claiming / ill / poor etc.

Recently, I have seen someone having a hard time although ill and having a baby and considering claiming tax credits. I also have had a hard time although illness (both me and DP) and low wage means claiming some tax credits.

I can understand the rage for those fraudulently claiming benefits or the like but why for those legitimately claiming? or AIBU?

People on here will make every excuse under the sun for benefit fraudsters.

There's a pretty big difference between benefit fraud, and choosing to claim benefits you're entitled to but which others think you're wrong to claim.

x2boys · 29/07/2017 21:46

I don't actually agree Zippy sometimes I think those on mumsnet who are far removed from the benefit system can't see who those that earn just over the thresh hold might be a bit pissed off with others claiming fraudently because say am exyra £60 quid a week means nothing to them but makes a hell of difference to others.

Bluntness100 · 29/07/2017 21:47

I see no benefit bashing going on. I see a desire for people who can work to work, but when people are genuinely in need they are encouraged.

Maybe you could back up your post by positing links to all these threads bashing people?

baileysicecream · 29/07/2017 21:47

I am trying to get our useless MP to take on the case of a bedbound woman who can't claim PIP because she can't get to her assessment. That's because she is bedbound Angry

But others appear to be entitled to more but have less need.

Baffles me.

LovelyBath77 · 29/07/2017 21:49

I can;t be arsed to find the links to be honest, one is on here atm.

If me and the other posted had posted about claiming PIP, not tax credits, it would have been totally different. Even though tax credits has disability elements in it.

LovelyBath77 · 29/07/2017 21:52

Exactly Anon, it isn;t about benefit fraud.

I wonder if it's because PIP isn't means tested, but the others are. Not sure. Confused

OP posts:
Nightshirt · 29/07/2017 21:54

@baileysicecream, I am bedridden. I had to get my GP to write a letter confirming I needed a home assessment for PIP.

Zippydoodah · 29/07/2017 21:54

X2boys. That is understandable but then we used to be able to claim more until the tories cut wtc. I ended up losing out but, thankfully, dh had recovered and got a job shortly after

Alittlepotofrosie · 29/07/2017 21:57

I know the thread and there was some pretty disgusting comments on there suggesting poor people shouldn't have children. If the government says someone is entitled to tax credits then damn right they should claim them. The woman in question would be losing money by working and putting her child in childcare. I wouldn't work in her situation either.

baileysicecream · 29/07/2017 21:57

It's just not been happening, Nightshirt

It baffles me. I won't put details up as it isn't fair. But it is beyond infuriating. I think they expect her to live on fresh air Hmm

Nightshirt · 29/07/2017 22:01

Sorry to hear that @bailey. Believe you, PIP process can be a nightmare :(

baileysicecream · 29/07/2017 22:02

Have contacted the local paper - hoping they will do some MP shaming Grin

YTho · 29/07/2017 22:04

It's the whole 'deserving vs undeserving' poor thing. but I think moajority of people realise that there are times in anybody's life when they will need help such as when they have little children etc.

Nightshirt · 29/07/2017 22:07

Great idea. Sorry typing is making me feel very ill and I must stop and rest. Good luck!

ChasingHighs · 29/07/2017 22:08

Some people work hard and good things don't come to them. I bet they work a lot harder than some of the benefit bashers on MN.

LovelyBath77 · 29/07/2017 22:10

It's just there is lots of empathy for those on PIP but such rude comments on other stuff. It was said yes my husband should do anything to get us off tax credits despite him having immunotherapy and string cancer drugs for his IBD which would have made him so ill, he doesn't claim PIP or ESA though but for some reason because it was tax credits it seemed to be different Confused and we should be off them ASAP.

Maybe some of the people commenting don't realise the reality of the situation, and that they don't just give stuff willy nilly but do check if you are entitled to it first? I don't know, it's just really weird.

OP posts:
ChasingHighs · 29/07/2017 22:11

The problem is people work really hard for there money only to see it go on someone else's children and sometimes on other people's phone, telly, branded food, branded clothes etc..

There you go, typical benefit bashing post.

Alittlepotofrosie · 29/07/2017 22:14

People on benefits dont deserve heinz beans you know. They should have factory floor scrapings and be grateful for it.

Bluntness100 · 29/07/2017 22:17

I can;t be arsed to find the links to be honest, one is on here atm

Well I'm on here all the time and I haven't seen it, so I'm not sure of the point of starting a thread accusing mumsnet of something if you can't be arsed backing it up? Confused

LovelyBath77 · 29/07/2017 22:17

Just imagining a post about PIP and the disabled person being told

"You carried a baby you can't be that ill"
or
"the illness is a convenient excuse"

Yes chasing, that kind of post is the kind of thing, maybe some kind of rage at unfairness, that the other person is getting something they are not?

OP posts:
LovelyBath77 · 29/07/2017 22:18

Ok I'll try and find them.
