To think Prince George will never be King?

Or if he is, the next generation won't be?

We were talking about it at lunch. I just have the strong feeling now that the monarchy will fizzle out at some point in the next 50-100 years.

It's not an active "want" just a notion.

Two of us talking earlier felt similarly but the other three were aghast.

So, AIBU?

Why do we care.

They will be privileged forever whether the monarchy survives or not.

I don't like any of them. Sorryyyyy

ellestyle · 29/07/2017 22:22

. Bottom line is they feed tourism
Oh for goodness sake, no they really don't. Of all the tourist hotspots, Buck house isn't even in the top ten. Why do tourists flock to France every year. Tourists would come with or without the royals, i'd even go as far to say we'd get more, all those empty palaces, they could be self funding with the amount of tourists they'd pull in. It's one huge myth that the royals bring in the tourists.

People come to see the trappings of royalty, not the royals themselves, unless Fergie is selling coffee afternoons to Chinese tourists.

If they're all packed off to Balmoral and we were a republic, the palaces could be open all year round and generate more tourist revenue.

Why is Charles not legally married? He was married according to the laws of the land. According to the law of the church, he was a widower when he remarried as Diana was dead. As the head of the Church of England, if he wants Camilla to be Queen, she is. I quite like her. She clearly is the love of his life. He was incredibly stupid not to marry her in the first place. His and Diana's marriage was utterly disastrous.

rosietosey · 29/07/2017 22:59

Personally I would never pay to vistit a Palace, Chateau or whatever.

Reason is because they are too crowded and full of well tourists like me!

But I made an exception to book online for the Vatican and it was just stunning. No crowds, early morning. My God. Brilliant.

You have to leave your prejudices about the wealth of Catholicism behind just to see it.

Groupie123 · 29/07/2017 23:11

People really love the queen. She came out during the blitz with her mum. Imagine that. No other European queen or princess would ever come out in an actual war zone to show their support. I agree that not nearly as many people love Charles, but Wills is definitely loved. He will probably be the most loved King in modern history.

ellestyle · 29/07/2017 23:14

The Uk average 35 million a year tourists, France averages 85 million. Hmm Doesn't look as if the lack of a royal family does France any harm whatsoever, in fact the most visited country in the world.

JoNapot · 29/07/2017 23:17

The alternative would likely have been a President Thatcher and a President Blair.

Even a crap monarchy is better than the alternative imo.

ellestyle · 29/07/2017 23:20

Wow what a trooper.

ellestyle · 29/07/2017 23:26

No they were prime ministers who got voted out. Why would the alternative be someone like them anyway. Fwiw we aren't forced to have to have a president anyway, a prime minister is enough. Rules can be changed.

SerfTerf · 29/07/2017 23:58

Wouldn't something like a Viceroy (without the Roy) be more likely here?

We have a great tradition of ceremonial mayors, wardens and governors (commonwealth and overseas territories).

I can't see a full blown presidency in the UK, somehow.

think Kate is bolstering them up at the moment , I think we could do abit less of William and Harry moaning and over sharing their problems . I'd like to see and hear a lot more about what Kate is about, she looks patient and charming all the time. Diana really bolstered the Royal profile and she really was more interesting than any of the Royals-

But Kate isn't royal, she wasn't born into, and that's the problem, by modernising they have removed all the smoke and mirrors and what you are left with is people just like you and me, Kate is really not that much different to me, and there are lots of us, so the royal family have just become so everyday, almost a British rival to the kardashians.

Add to the that the incessant moaning about not wanting the job, and both Katherine and William appearing quite void of any personally they are almost disappearing in a cloud of blandness.

A few years ago I was a strong believer in the abolishment of the monarchy, but now I barely give them a thought, I think that's almost worse.

MeanAger · 30/07/2017 01:07

I'm not allowed to say this in my (NI republican) family but I secretly love the royal family and hope they last forever.

MeanAger · 30/07/2017 01:12

Sara that's why I think Charles step aside in favour of William.

As far as I know if Charles does that then she removes his line from the throne so William wouldn't be able to take it.

stella23 · 30/07/2017 01:12

meanager what do you like about them though? The casual racism? The jobs they do?

MommaGee · 30/07/2017 01:14

almost a British rival to the kardashians there are lots of accusations that could be leveled against them but given your description of blandness I'm not really convinced this one works

MommaGee · 30/07/2017 01:15

As far as I know if Charles does that then she removes his line from the throne so William wouldn't be able to take it no it just passes top the next in line otherwise where would it go? Anne?

MeanAger · 30/07/2017 01:15

Oh I was about to answer what I thought was a genuine question. Never mind.

MommaGee · 30/07/2017 01:19

Uh?

MeanAger · 30/07/2017 01:21

Previous comment in relation to stella's post.

In response to yours momma, I'm not at all sure but if it was the case then yes I assume anne.

IbizaLovesSundays · 30/07/2017 01:29

I'm 28 and a massive royalist (bit embarrassing really but) we had the local bakery bake us a cake with will and kate on it for the royal wedding and had a massive BBQ! But even I acknowledge that they will have to survive Charles. I think there is much more favour for William/ Harry/Kate and also Charlotte and George than the generation above them. And TBH I think the generation before are tainted by Diana. How would one abolish the monarchy? Surely it would have to be the parliament? And the House of Commons and lords would have to agree it. Might get through commons if we had a massive Corbynite labour but lords would never approve it. could depend on how bad things get if Brexit actually ever happens. If it does we are going to have a rough economic time and maybe people will be more angry at the money spent on a monarchy, but actually they do so much good for our image oversees and our tourism that the money they get is more than earned and also they bring such morale to the charities and causes they support. I would love to be able to live a fully funded life of charity work lol!!! I get the counter arguments too- but I do love the monarchy

MommaGee · 30/07/2017 01:30

Ah, k

No it must pass directly down otherwise what would happen if the queen decided tomorrow sees too old for this and abdicates? It wouldst pass over to Margaret's family so David Armstrong-Jones, 2nd Earl of Snowdon

FastWindow · 30/07/2017 01:34

Oh for goodness sake. Liz was never expected to be the queen, until her uncle abdicated the responsibility. Things went sideways and the job was utterly landed in George VI lap, really without his choice or preparation. So Liz was landed with the succession.
Us commoners can go on Reed or Monster and get a new job if we hate our current job otherwise career. At any point. Or we can just stop working. And claim the dole because - insert valid reason - Hmm

Iflyaway · 30/07/2017 01:40

About a third of the nation's of the world's countries are monarchies.

Well, you didn't give a link to support that. Out of 180+ countries in the world, I don't see it.

UK, some of Europe - Belgium, Holland, Sweden, Spain to mention a few.
I don't see Italy, Greece or most of Eastern Europe having a royal family....

Some countries do - like Swaziland, Morocco in Africa.

Thailand, can't think of any others in S.E. Asia.

Never heard of any in the Americas. North and South.

Whatever you think of any Royals, they keep the Hello Magazine going lol

FastWindow · 30/07/2017 01:41

Also, the monarchy pretty much funds itself through current investments. We as taxpayers do not fund the monarchy - we fund lots of other pointless shite such as local councils. Who do not manage the investment quite as well, hence the massive divergence in authorities, so we complain year after year about potholes etc, which could have been fixed 15 years ago. And so on.
