The baby was born prematurely and so they decided to call him Prem.

Is that weird?

When I was recovering from the birth of DD (henceforth known as Eppi-Dural) one of the other mothers had just named her son Diesel.

I'm a nursery teacher so wouldn't surprise me if the op is being serious about the name.
When we get the list of children due to start we don't get told if it's a boy or a girl as the list just gets sent to us from the council. When it's unusual names we Try to work out if the child is a boy or a girl. Googling the name etc.
But we have had very obvious boy names on list and the child is actually a girl. Parents wanted to be modern and start a trend. It does confuse the other children though as to start with they will often say 'but she's not a boy, so why does she have a boys name' Never had it the other way though.

My Nepalese neighbour is called Prem.

Kpo58 · 29/07/2017 10:25

Diesel as a name isn't that unusual. I was more surprised to come across a Petrol.

Studied with a girl named Bo.

TeaAddict235 · 29/07/2017 11:03

And a boy called Nature

Magratmakethetea · 29/07/2017 11:13

Prem is a common Indian name, it means love in Hindi.
It gets used quite a lot for characters in Indian movies. DP had an uncle by that name as well. Sometimes it's short for Premchand other times it is just Prem.

Sorry for the long one but recognised the name straight away.

Perhaps baby was conceived in a Premier Inn?

CommonSenseIsNotAllThatCommon · 29/07/2017 11:19

One person's unusual name is another person's common name. There's a girl in Dd class called Sinderella and she does look like the character.

I fee like I'm in the Kath and Kim episode where they are choosing a baby name. Grin

Prem means love in a number of South Asian languages. It's a beautiful name. A little weird if it's just because the child was born prematurely, but at least it's a real name with a beautiful meaning.
