Mine is the death of the Princess of Wales. I was 12 at the time- Mum came and woke me and my sister up (much to her annoyance as she had been on a night out the night before) and told us it was important we watched as it was a huge deal. I can still remember sitting there that morning watching the news coverage. The next day mum took us to London for the day and we went to put flowers outside Kensington palace.

I didn't get it at the time but I was the same age as harry and honestly can't imagine having to live through my teens, getting married and having DD without my mum by my side never mind dealing with the pressure of royal life..

SouthernComforts the cockle pickers drowning will have been 15 years ago 😵 I live in Morecambe and remember ther helicopters searching the bay the next day.

The biggest event of my childhood was 9/11 but the first I remember was John Major resigning because I was furious that they cancelled children's tv!

LostGarden · 28/07/2017 20:01

Winston Churchill's funeral.
The next memorable TV moments were England winning the World Cup then the Moon Landing

lalalalyra · 28/07/2017 20:01

Lockerbie, Hillsborough and Dunblane are the three I remember most clearly (I was a teenager for Dunblane).

I also have a memory of a news report about a baby being put into a cot thing with a zipped up protective cover which from who else was there and where I was must have been something to do with the Gulf War.

BettyOBarley · 28/07/2017 20:02

The start of the Gulf war as my dad is ex-army and I didn't understand how the forces worked so I worried that he'd be called up to go fight.

Also the murder of Sarah Harper as my mum worked with her dad.

joannegrady90 · 28/07/2017 20:03

Jamie bulger, I was exactly the same age as him when he was murdered.

Berlin wall coming down, princess di death.

jay55 · 28/07/2017 20:06

Challenger disaster stands out for me. I was about 8, we were doing a project on space. A woman was finally going up and we watched it all unfold in the TV room at school. Horrible.

JanetStWalker · 28/07/2017 20:06

The Live Aid concert was on my 11th birthday, I was allowed to stay up thrillingly late and watch it all...was only interested in seeing Wham though Blush

araiwa · 28/07/2017 20:06

Bradford city fire Sad

Damonlufc88 · 28/07/2017 20:07

Princess Diana's death, I was in Alcudia at the time. I was 8. Wasn't too sure what was happening but knew things were different. Followed by 9/11 I was at my friends in his kitchen open mouthed

HibernoCaledonian · 28/07/2017 20:07

Challenger and the Chernobyl disaster.

9/11 was the university graduation of my now DH.

gingergenius · 28/07/2017 20:08

The three day week and the power cuts. Also the drought of '76 and water standpipes

LittleLionMansMummy · 28/07/2017 20:09

Zeebrugge. I was 8.

Groovee · 28/07/2017 20:10

The Lockerbie bombing. It happened just before Christmas.

pinkmagic1 · 28/07/2017 20:10

Hillsborough disaster.

Scoose · 28/07/2017 20:11

James bulger because he was found near to where I lived and the perpetrators were a similar age to me Sad

CaptainHammer · 28/07/2017 20:11

Princess Diana dying, I was 8 and remember it fairly well. 9/11 I remember clearly that whole day, where I was when I was told etc.

Foslady · 28/07/2017 20:12

A big explosion at a company in a small village to me that happened on Gala day.
My friend's dad was a fireman who ended up being called to it and she didn't see him for days. I remember her crying at school.
People still talk about it

HeyMicky · 28/07/2017 20:12

Berlin Wall - we were in Australia and my parents woke me up in the early hours to watch it because it was clearly such a huge event

I then remember the first gulf war - it was the first "mass media" war with live reporting and satellite technology

Scoose · 28/07/2017 20:13

Also dunblane I was 11 at the time

hackmum · 28/07/2017 20:16

What an interesting question. My first memories of news events were, I think, 1969 and the moon landings and the Prince of Wales's Investiture, which I remember well because we were going to go and see it, but I had an asthma attack and couldn't go.

I don't remember Aberfan.

I have a good memory of the 1972 Olympics, particularly Olga Korbut's floor routine and Mark Spitz winning seven gold medals. I remember, but less clearly, the Israeli athletes being killed.

I remember the general elections of the early 70s, the power cuts and the three day week. The 1979 election of Thatcher was a big standout too.

I remember the Biafran famine, the Vietnam War and Watergate, though I had no understanding of it.

But I would find it very hard to say which of those events was the most significant or which made most impression on me.

Str4ngedaysindeed · 28/07/2017 20:20

Although it was probably more the 'winter of discontent 'with 3 days weeks, power off at 9pm and a lot of struggling for my mum who was a single parent. It was always cold I remember.
