Mine is the death of the Princess of Wales. I was 12 at the time- Mum came and woke me and my sister up (much to her annoyance as she had been on a night out the night before) and told us it was important we watched as it was a huge deal. I can still remember sitting there that morning watching the news coverage. The next day mum took us to London for the day and we went to put flowers outside Kensington palace.

I didn't get it at the time but I was the same age as harry and honestly can't imagine having to live through my teens, getting married and having DD without my mum by my side never mind dealing with the pressure of royal life..

OP posts:

The Royal Wedding (Charles and Di) and the raising of the Mary Rose.

Spikeyball · 28/07/2017 19:17

Charles and Diana's wedding. I had chicken pox and remember dabbing my spots with calamine lotion whilst watching it and my mum commenting on "the state of her dress".
The earliest is the Birmingham pub bombings.

Leeds2 · 28/07/2017 19:17

Leeds losing the European up Final to Bayern Munich in 1975.

Queen's Silver Jubilee in 1977.

Also remember Olga Korbut, which must've been 1972.

WandaOff · 28/07/2017 19:18

Another oldie here. I remember Churchill's funeral. I was given a Churchill Crown. Also Aberfan.
I remember watching Americans protesting against the Vietnam war

Reading that made me feel the same way my grandma probably did when she'd tell us about when the Titanic sank and how everybody reacted!

Snap8TheCat · 28/07/2017 19:19

Weirdly I remember the Louise Woodward case, however I couldn't tell you what year/how old I was but that was the first thing that came in to my head when I read the title.

Meesh77 · 28/07/2017 19:20

Mrs Thatcher winning her first election in 1979.

SheilaBirling · 28/07/2017 19:20

The first one I remember must have been about 1978 and it was Lord Mountbatten's funeral.

What happened to Shergar? Early 80s.

HappyAxolotl · 28/07/2017 19:21

In nicer news, Helen Sharman being the first British woman in space.

And on the same day Gazza wrecking his knee in the FA Cup Final. (My whole school was football mad, that was indeed news.)

Incitatis · 28/07/2017 19:21

Elvis dying.

I also remember the strikes in the 70s and the Queen's Silver Jubilee.

Meesh77 · 28/07/2017 19:21

Spikeyball, my mother also commented on the state of her dress! Such a shame though, it was a beautiful dress for the times.

Heygirlheyboy · 28/07/2017 19:23

Oh yes verybutchy Pat Cash!!

Chottie · 28/07/2017 19:24

Goodness lots of memories flooding back now....

Churchill's body going down The Thames on a barge and all the cranes dipping as he passed as a mark of respect...

The first man walking on the moon and watching it on a tiny grainy TV in the school hall with everyone else at my school

Yes to the newsreels and Americans protesting against the Vietnam war. And that song that was always playing ....... and it's 1, 2, 3, what are we fighting for....... don't ask me I don't give a damn, the next stop is Vietnam....

Heygirlheyboy · 28/07/2017 19:24

Snap8theCat it was 20 years ago! Where is she now... I had just started uni.

Ameliablue · 28/07/2017 19:25

Band aid
Nelson Mandela being freed
Berlin Wall coming down

SeamstressfromTreacleMineRoad · 28/07/2017 19:26

Oh my, but I feel old... Mine is Kennedy's assassination Shock

I remember watching the telly with my Grandad because my Mum and Dad were getting ready to go out - there was a newsflash to say that the President had been injured, then the phone on the newsreader's desk rang - he picked it up, listened, replaced the receiver and announced that President Kennedy had died... Sad

Mum said that their dinner dance wasn't very cheerful...!

morningtoncrescent62 · 28/07/2017 19:27

Decimalisation- I remember trying to buy an ice cream with old pennies and the ice cream man telling me they weren't used any more

Though confusingly we could carry on using sixpences, and shilling and 2-shilling coins instead of 5p and 10p pieces for quite a long time after old pennies had bit the dust. Or at least that's how I remember it!

BabychamSocialist · 28/07/2017 19:29

Don't remember Thatcher winning, but I remember her being ousted and thinking it was a win for feminism.

Happier memories:

Halley's Comet passing by in 86(?) was a huge event. I remember our school hosting a thing for it and telling us all about it.

I don't know why I remember "Vogue" by Madonna so vividly, but it seemed a big deal at the time.

Failbydefault · 28/07/2017 19:29

Chernobyl, I was about 18 and terrified

Cantseethewoods · 28/07/2017 19:30

Falklands and Miners Strike

VeryButchyRestingFace · 28/07/2017 19:31

Snap8theCat it was 20 years ago! Where is she now... I had just started uni.

She was a few months older than me. I remember the fundraising effort - all before the UK press turned on her for giving an exclusive to her tabloid of choice. Hmm.

I believe she went to study law, became a dance teacher, got married and had a baby.

I'm a mine of useless information. Grin

Horses4 · 28/07/2017 19:31

Piper Alpha and Lockerbie.

mummyretired · 28/07/2017 19:32

I'm old too ... Kennedy's assassination, the Torrey Canyon oil spill (local to us), the Aberfan disaster. The investiture of the Prince of Wales.

mrsRosaPimento · 28/07/2017 19:32

I was doing a levels when Chernobyl happened. I remember worrying if it was safe to breathe.

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 28/07/2017 19:33

Diana death..remember waiting for the morning TV to start..Smtv live maybe and it being the news instead
Then the funeral..my neighbour debating wherever she'd be judged for going and doing the gardening

Then 9/11...coming home from school and being shown on repeat not really knowing what gone on or had heard of the twin towers till then
