Mine is the death of the Princess of Wales. I was 12 at the time- Mum came and woke me and my sister up (much to her annoyance as she had been on a night out the night before) and told us it was important we watched as it was a huge deal. I can still remember sitting there that morning watching the news coverage. The next day mum took us to London for the day and we went to put flowers outside Kensington palace.

I didn't get it at the time but I was the same age as harry and honestly can't imagine having to live through my teens, getting married and having DD without my mum by my side never mind dealing with the pressure of royal life..

Hillsborough and the raising of the Mary Rose.

The latter we were made to watch at school, on the big telly that used to get wheeled with great ceremony into the room. Grin I was a bit too young, I think; I remember not really understanding what was going on or the significance.

Olddear · 29/07/2017 18:26

I remember Kennedy being shot!! I was 6. my sister and I were watching tv when the news came through.

CharlieSierra · 29/07/2017 18:33

Is anyone on here old enough to remember what they were doing when Kennedy was shot

It's one of my earliest memories. I remember the shock of the adults around me, and the television coverage of the funeral.

Floisme · 29/07/2017 18:35

I was too Olddear I can remember my mum hearing the tv and running in and how I was laughing at first because she looked so shocked and I didn't understand what was going on - then realising she was crying.

IrritatedUser1960 · 29/07/2017 18:40

The moon landing in the 1960's, we all gathered round the tv in AWE. I have never felt such a sense of amazement since.

19lottie82 · 29/07/2017 18:42

Jamie Bulger murder, Dunblane massacre or Princess Diana's death.

EmilyAlice · 29/07/2017 18:42

I was twelve when Kennedy was shot and they announced it on the television. I remember saying "oh my God" and being amazed that nobody told me off.

Yogagirl123 · 29/07/2017 18:43

Falklands war

Queenioqueenio · 29/07/2017 18:48

The AIDS campaign - utterly terrifying
Andrew & Fergies wedding
challenger
The miners strike - I was very scared by the violent scenes on TV, obviously I was too young to
understand.
Brixton Riots
Chernobyl disaster

Blankiefan · 29/07/2017 19:04

The Miners Strike

PickAChew · 29/07/2017 19:18

Less horrible events that stand out:
The first "test tube baby"
The start of breakfast TV
The launch of channel 4
The building of the Humber bridge.

Nightshirt · 29/07/2017 19:18

Zeebrugge ferry disaster
Falklands

FelixtheMouse · 29/07/2017 19:20

Aberfan and England winning the World Cup.

ChristmasFluff · 29/07/2017 19:41

The moon landings. I can remember watching the pictures with my Dad as my mum did the ironing and I was playing horses on the clothes horse. I must have been 4 at the time.

nocoolnamesleft · 29/07/2017 19:51

Vague memories of the winter of discontent. Not so much the news, as the power cuts, and my mum crying as she tried to prepare cooked meals, in the middle of winter, on an old gas camping stove.

Miners strikes, from the media.

The royal wedding - I was annoyed, because we were on holiday, and the brass rubbing centre was closed because of the wedding.

Zeebrugge - saw it on the news. Thank god my parents had changed their minds on holiday dates. Then a week later sailed past the upturned still lit hull, on her sister ship.

Falklands.

MimsyBorogroves · 29/07/2017 19:59

Vague memories of Hillsborough. We raised money in primary school, and I remember walking around with a collection tin and hearing "Hillsborough disaster" a lot.

James Bulger.

Freddie Mercury dying.

Di when I was early teens (I think)

Different eras, but all stand out for various personal reasons:

Hillsborough

Blair winning (tears of joy in our staff room)

Miners' Strike and Toxteth riots.

DangerousBeanz · 29/07/2017 20:23

I remember being generally worried about IRA bombs from an early age because they blew up a coach on the M62 not far from where we lived. Then Ross Mcwirter (sp) was shot by them in my birthday.
Basically the news seemed to be full of lots of bombings when I was small.

BlurryFace · 29/07/2017 20:26

Lady Di's death and 9/11.

MrsPresley · 29/07/2017 20:38

The first news story that i remember is when i was at primary school and a group of children from the local secondary school had went on a trip to the Cairngorm mountains.

I can't remember how many went but most of them died. I remember saying prayers at school, it was extremely sad.Sad more so because they were from my area and there were children at my school who knew/were related to them. Sad

Next big news for me was Elvis dying, I was and still am a huge fan and I was devastated Sad I swore if I couldn't marry Elvis I wouldn't marry anyone Blush Grin

then a month later Marc Bolan!

ninnypoo · 29/07/2017 20:40

9/11.

Shamefully, I remember flicking through all the tv channels and being annoyed because they were all showing news (even Nickelodeon). The actual seriousness didn't hit me till I was much older.

LouHotel · 29/07/2017 20:43

The troubles - seeing children my age being escorted through protesters to school. Didnt really understand what was going on then except that little girls who looked like me were frightened.

Princess Diana's death.

Mad cow disease

GoldSpot · 29/07/2017 20:43

Charles and Di's wedding
Falklands
Miners strike
Kings Cross fire
