....to steal a changing room at the pool?

So our family of four (mum, dad and two toddlers) went to the swimming baths. When we were all done in the pool we went hunting for a family cubicle to get changed, the first one we entered had a sports bag of gear in there (my other half commented that they probably didn't want to buy a token for the lockers), so we went and walked around the rest of the changing area - all the rest of the family cubicles were in use, so we went back into the one with the sports bag, moved it to the edge of the cubicle and started drying ourselves.

About two minutes after we started to towel the kids off a man knocked on the door and asked if there were any things in the cubicle, I said there was. He was then pretty incredulous telling us that it was his cubicle and asking if we'd finished in there so he could finish using it. I explained that this was the only free family one, that it was devoid of people for at least five minutes since we trekked around the changing area, and handed his stuff back.

So, were we in the wrong to deprive this gentleman of his reserved cubicle? I thought we were perfectly reasonable, but the sheer incredulousness of the man makes me think that I'm probably detatched from reality.

I don't think you were in the wrong. It's like bagging sunbeds round the pool. V selfish.

Supersoaryflappypigeon · 27/07/2017 21:26

Yanbu-changing rooms aren't lockers.

hippy1952 · 27/07/2017 21:26

Yanbu.

Needsomeflapjacks · 27/07/2017 21:27

Unless he had 3dc hiding in the bag that needed dressing ywnbu to lay claim to the cubicle. .

GeillisTheWitch · 27/07/2017 21:28

YANBU. If there were lockers he should have used them. Trying to reserve a cubicle for your own personal use is a dick move he's lucky someone didn't throw his stuff on the wet floor.

abigamarone · 27/07/2017 21:30

I thought you meant you'd kept your stuff in it at first - no, you were quite right to use the unused cubicle.
You'd be very unreasonable if you'd emptied his clothing and towel into the various puddles of water in the changing rooms.

It really annoys me when people do this and they used to do it all the time when my dc had swimming lessons. They put signs up telling people not to do it or their stuff would be removed. People still did Angry Yanbu.

Mumzypopz · 27/07/2017 21:35

I don't think you were right. Someone did this to me once. Son at swimming lesson. Right before the end of the lesson I went down and got a cubicle, putting sons stuff in there. Went to side of pool to get son, went back to cubicle and a dad and child had nipped in there. If they weren't quick enough to get down there in order to get a cubicle, they shouldn't pinch someone else's.

GreeboIsACutePussPuss · 27/07/2017 21:36

YANBU, especially as from the sounds of your post he was on his own and could have used the normal changing rooms rather than the family ones.

AtHomeDadGlos · 27/07/2017 21:36

I did this exact same thing to someone last week. Sod them. It's not on to stick your bag in there and 'bagsie' it (pun not intended but happy with it! Smile).

I just passed them their stuff through a cracked door. Was tempted to make them wait until we were finished but my DD was kicking off as she still wanted to be swimming!

sausaaaaaaage · 27/07/2017 21:37

sixinthebed... Possibly, or the bathroom. I'm not sure showering would be a decent excuse, the pool in question has plenty of hooks by the shower and a huge tiled seating area you could keep your possessions on so they can remain in sight

You don't reserve cubicles, you go to use them when you need them. If there are none (legitimately) unavailable you wait until one is free.

Mumof56 · 27/07/2017 21:41

YANBU

Cubicles are for changing in If he wasn't in it the whole length of time it took you to check the others, he wasn't using it as intended.

TroelsLovesSquinkies · 27/07/2017 21:41

Don't take stuff into the cubicle unless you are in their with it.
Take a pound or a token and get a locker like the rest of us.
Don't complain if someone tosses you stuff out and uses the empty cubicle, they are actually using it for the purpose it is intended, not using it to store your stuff.
Really people are so entitled!

Namechangetempissue · 27/07/2017 21:46

YANBU. A changing room is exactly that -a room for getting changed in. You then remove your items to lockers, you can't reserve them for the length of your stay. It is especially selfish hogging a large family or disabled room with baby change table or hand rails. I've always just turfed peoples stuff out onto a bench or pushed to the side while we changed.

Waddlelikeapenguin · 27/07/2017 21:48

YANBU

Dumdedumdum · 27/07/2017 21:48

Eejits do this all the time but they are always in the wrong.

MaisyPops · 27/07/2017 21:49

YANBU
A changing room is for getting changed in.

Plus as a single person he should have used a SINGLE cubicle, not a family one (which is quite clearly for families!)

EggysMom · 27/07/2017 21:53

YANBU. Although I'd probably have moved his bag to outside of the cubicle so whoever could find it again easily.

Mumzypopz why didn't you wait until your son was finished to get your stuff and then find a cubicle? It's not "pinching a cubicle", it's using a cubicle that isn't in actual use by somebody else at that time.

Notknownatthisaddress · 27/07/2017 21:53

YANBU. I have seen people in my pool put their stuff in a changing room and buggar off for their 45 minute session and leave it there, so they can have the same one when they come back.

I deliberately move their stuff to one 5 changing rooms away (like 15 -20 feet down the room,) just to fuck them off. Like, you don't own the changing room you tool!

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 27/07/2017 21:54

There's signs everywhere at my local sport centre that bags are not to be left in cubicle and will be removed. It's actually enforced too as I've witnessed every single time I go to toddler swimming the attendants removing bags and placing them on the benches.

ChilliMary · 27/07/2017 21:58

I hate this! People who leave their stuff in the changing cubicle ( for the duration of the lesson/swim session) - that is wrong! Put your stuff in the locker and then find the cubicle! Not the other way around. It's so entitled!!

londonrach · 27/07/2017 22:03

Next time op dump the stuff outside the cubicle in a wet puddle

MyPatronusIsAUnicorn · 27/07/2017 22:06

YANBU. People do this all the time, especially swimming lesson times, it's a nightmare and there are signs everywhere saying they aren't allowed to do it, they still do though. To the pp who said they put their stuff in then went to get their child from the swimming lessons, no, you are in the wrong. That's exactly what you are not supposed to do.
