To ask if you like 'scary' films?

Backstory: I'm not what you would call a horror fan - Hammer films are about as far as I'll go. Anyway, we all decided to sit down and watch Jaws and I'd forgotten just how terrified it made me all those years ago!

Do you like scary films? What are your favourites?

I hate horror films. There's enough horror in the world without me actually choosing to watch any more. DH loves them but I'm not a huge film watcher at all. Saying that I did watch Goodfellas last night when I found it starting on TV despite having it on DVD and being able to say all the dialogue 😂😂

NameChangeFamousFolk · 26/07/2017 16:59

I like a bit of a spooky ghost story or supernatural mystery type thing, but I can't stand anything bloodthirsty or horrifically violent. The Woman in Black is my kind of thing.

Like hats I have quite a powerful, negative reaction to seeing even glimpses of some of the horrible films out there.

LloydColeandhisCoconuts · 26/07/2017 17:01

I have a love/hate relationship with scary films! Grin I like being scared but then hate the consequences when I'm alone in the flat or need a wee at 3am!
I was terrified by Jaws when it first came out and Stephen King's It traumatised both me and my siblings (I made them watch it with me when they were way too young because my 15 year old self couldn't handle it!). I don't think they've forgiven me for that.
I remember my big sister showing me the Fright Night cinema picture and being scared of that. And then my dad showing me the picture and everyone laughing at my response. The buggers! Grin

Witchend · 26/07/2017 17:07

Nothing more scary than a U please.Grin

Gertiegoolash · 26/07/2017 17:09

I love horror! Any kind really, although I love all the ones from the late 70s and 80s as those were the ones I grew up watching, Halloween, A Nightmare on Elm street, Hellraiser, The Thing, The Fly ect are among my favourites. They don't really scare me anymore though.

iklboo · 26/07/2017 17:09

Agree The Thing is a great film. My favourite hottie of all time.

The Conjuring was good for old fashioned scares. It made strapping DH jump a few times.

American Werewolf In London is a classic.

I was never scared by The Exorcist or The Omen type films.

upperlimit · 26/07/2017 17:10

I'm ok with violence and gore, monsters, vampires, zombies, crazy men but I'm an utter wimp when it comes to the invisible scary things.

tickyandtackyandjackythebacky · 26/07/2017 17:10

I love scary psychological films. Not that fussed on a gore fest though, I find them a bit boring. War films absolutely terrify me though and stay with me long after they're over. I wish I'd never seen Fury.

LloydColeandhisCoconuts · 26/07/2017 17:19

Blooming scary, no?

makeourfuture · 26/07/2017 17:51

Jaws is not scary - until you think about it while swimming.

OverTheHammer · 26/07/2017 18:26

I love them but most are shit. Sharks and other animals don't scare me, neither do serial killers, torturers or zombies. I do love a good ghost though, or something with a good psychological twist.

BabychamSocialist · 26/07/2017 19:22

ticky

Totally agree with you on the war film thing. Took my WW2 vet granddad to see Saving Private Ryan and we had to leave ten minutes in because he found the D-Day scene too intense. Must admit, war films can be way scarier than horror!

OverTheHammer

Yeah, I don't mind thrillers. Silence of the Lambs gets lumped into horror but it's really more of a psychological thriller, and one of my favourites! Gothika is good too, with Halle Berry in it (though you can see the twist coming five minutes in!)

I used to Love them would beg my do to watch them he didn't like them ever since having do I can't watch them. Ever again.

hmcAsWas · 26/07/2017 20:08

I love them - particularly those in the zombie genre. Particular favourites: I am Legend, 28 Days and 28 Days Later and World War Z

hmcAsWas · 26/07/2017 20:13

And this is my favourite track from a Zombie film (28 Days Later) - I can see Robert Carlyle fleeing from a remote Scottish house pursued by super fast lethal zombies, casting a look back to his wife who is trapped at a window of the house and hurtling through forest to a river.....

trowelmonkey1 · 26/07/2017 20:14

I despise horror and gore. The only exception to this are the Hannibal Lecter films, but I have to be in the right frame of mind to watch them. Also, I have seen the Blair Witch Project and didn't find it remotely scary.

All of this is very odd considering I have an obsession with serial killers Grin

ApocalypseNowt · 26/07/2017 20:18

I LOVE horror films. All sorts really but am especially partial to a good slasher flick. Shame so many of them fall short.

Pretty much every night I have a scan of the horror channel to see if anything's worth recording. I think horror is one of the only genres where you can find brilliant films you've never heard of....love the thrill of finding a hidden gory/scary gem!

Kirstsworld · 26/07/2017 20:18

@trowelmonkey1 ooh I love the Hannibal letter ones, watched the original red dragon last night.. forgot how good it is.
I do love horror generally, not really scared by the 'jumpy' or supernatural stuff but two movies that stood out to me as very scary, more disturbing really are Funny Games and The Strangers... wouldn't watch either again if I was paid!!

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 26/07/2017 20:22

I love horror - I used to like gory films but not anymore...I think she has made me more sensitive!! I love scares - The Texas Chainsaw Massacre as Anne said is probably the best horror ever made. It has a frightening title yet shows very little violence onscreen. The images it conjures up are the most terrifying thing about it. I love the gritty, raw, seventies feel to it.

I haven't seen a really scary film in years - the only one I can think of is My Little Eye, which I saw in the cinema and was genuinely chilling.

Upyourdaisy · 26/07/2017 20:27

I absolutely LOVE scary films, still can't watch the original exorcist though (at the age of 27) it truly terrifies me. I love the conjuring 1 & 2, they're creepy as shit. The insidious films are worth a watch, I'm more into supernatural films rather than gory horror

CatThiefKeith · 26/07/2017 20:29

I don't do horror. Dh works evenings half the week and I have an over active imagination

BabychamSocialist · 26/07/2017 20:31

DP took me watching 'Scream' on our first date. It's a wonder we're still together really after I scalded his crotch with hot coffee during a jumpy bit...

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 26/07/2017 20:31

Im not a fan, some of them I can take but the Hills have eyes fucking creeped me right out.

1happyhippie · 26/07/2017 20:53

Ooh I love horror movies!
I like supernatural ones the best, I also love anything that's supposed to be based on a true story. Amityville horror, a haunting in Connecticut and the conjuring ones.
I used to watch the nightmare on elm street series almost weekly when I was younger.
The strangers was bloody creepy, and I enjoyed sinister

1wokeuplikethis · 26/07/2017 20:55

I love horror, particularly supernatural/jumpy/thriller type ones. Dislike gore and blood and prefer if it gets in my head! And loathe anything that involves babies or children (looking at you babadook) and I do like a good alien/zombie, like I am not a serial killer and world war z.

Favourites that I can think of are sixth sense, the visit, red dragon, the first paranormal activity.

Saw jaws, arachnophobia, hell raiser and terminator 2 when I was under 10...which is awful and gave me endless nightmares! Ooh forgot, bloody love Jurassic park...even though it's not actually horror!
