How do you wash up? (lighthearted)

Right, so after finding re-washing everything DP's mum very kindly washed up for me yesterday (still greasy and with food left on it), can I ask what the right way is to do the washing up? Wash under running water, or fill a sink?

I fill a sink and wash glasses and cups first, then the rest in messiness order.. If the water gets grimy I change it. I also rinse everything under a hot tap briefly after washing.

I'm not as bad as my brother.. he spends longer pre-washing up than washing up Hmm

JustCallMeKate · 24/07/2017 19:48

I scrape the food off, rinse under really hot water and put it in the dishwasher normally. If I didn't have a dishwasher I'd scrape the food, rinse under really hot water then wash it in the bowl before rinsing in really hot water and on to the dish drainer.

Allthewaves · 24/07/2017 20:00

Fill sink with water and washing up liquid - quite hot. Wash with sponge/scourer then rinse in second sink with cold water to check if clean.

carrotcakecupcake · 24/07/2017 20:02

If you're my MIL a quick swill under running water with a cursory rub with your fingers will do - soap and sponge optional .
We have a dishwasher so most goes in there, no prewash, but otherwise it's a big bowl of hot soapy water in the sink. I'll usually rinse the baby bottles after washing, but everything else is left to air dry.

MessyHouse91 · 24/07/2017 20:03

Thank you all - had a rather heated discussion with DP over this! Absolutely no way you're getting things clean rinsing under running water, regardless of how hot it is!

I clean mine under running hot water. I find it disgusting washing stuff in a big bowl of murky water. I like to give it a good rinse after scrubbing and my glasses are always sparkling.

BlurryFace · 24/07/2017 20:09

Half fill the bowl with hot soapy water and put it next to the sink, run the cold tap so once I have washed the dishes in the bowl I can rinse them and put them in the drainer.

aramintafatbottom · 24/07/2017 20:11

Run sink. As hot as I can bare in on my hands. Plenty of washing up liquid. Then wash cleanest to dirtiest. Some stuff gets rinsed first ie sauces and gravy etc.

YesILikeItToo · 24/07/2017 20:11

This is covered in the Brownie Guide handbook, I believe. Order of washing is glasses, plates, cutlery, pots? Or is it cutlery, plates?

I wash in hot soapy water and rinse with cold.

Natsku · 24/07/2017 20:14

I usually use the dishwasher (rinse everything first though) but when I do wash up normally I rinse everything first (generally straight after using it then pile it next to the sinks) then wash in hot soapy water, then rinse in running water (if there's a lot of dishes I'll wash and then pile them up in the other sink and then rinse a bunch at once) then they all go into the drying cupboard (oh how I love drying cupboards - what a brilliant invention!) so no need to dry with a tea towel.

Natsku · 24/07/2017 20:15

As for order, I usually do a tub first to hold the cutlery in while it waits to be rinsed, then do the cutlery, then glasses, then plates, then plastic tubs and bowls and lastly pots and pans.

MsHopey · 24/07/2017 20:23

I wouldn't call it a rinse and I definitely do some scrubbing. But the only way I can wash up is with the hot tap running. A bowl of water with bits floating in it makes me hurl Envy
No half arsed just running it under the tap, still needs a scrub.

SabineUndine · 24/07/2017 20:25

I scrape and rinse off anything that is very dirty, then put it all in a bowl, plates first, cutlery at the front edge, glasses and mugs on top. I soak pans on the sidde. I run boiling hot water over it, leave it to cool for an hour, then go back and scrub everything, clean the pans, tip the dirty water out, and rinse in cold clean water. I never dry up, just leave it to drain.

SheepyFun · 24/07/2017 20:26

I use a dishwasher - either the manual one (DH) or the machine Grin

In the absence of both the above, or for things that can't go in the machine, I have hot running water and put washing up liquid on a sponge, replenishing it regularly.

RupertsMum2 · 24/07/2017 20:28

I scrape all the food off then wash in a sink of hot soapy water before putting into the dishwasher. If it's something that's not suitable for dishwashing then I rinse it in hot water before putting it on the drying rack.

PuffinsSitOnMuffins · 24/07/2017 20:29

Bowl of really hot soapy water, sponge off mucky plates etc so that the dirty water goes straight down the sink, then proper wash and air dry,

Chartreuse45 · 24/07/2017 20:32

I use one sponge and a bowl of warm water to remove food and surface grease. This gets thrown out or used to water the garden. Then I take the clean sponge, add some fairy liquid and wash in a bowl of clean warm to hot water. Then rinse under running water. I don't need much fairy because the amount of grease/dirty is minimal, the dishes therefore don't need much rinsing. I agree, glasses first, then plates and bowls, cutlery and last saucepans. I got the idea of putting the fairy directly on the sponge from a friend of my mother's who lived in California, she asked a chef in a Chinese restaurant how his pots were as shiny as new ones. This was his secret, apparently.

maddiemookins16mum · 24/07/2017 20:33

Rinse off any really messy plates (sauces and the like). Fill sink with hot soapy water, glasses first and side plates, mugs, dinner plates then cutlery. If needed I 'll refill with clean water for the messy saucepans and casserole dishes. I never rinse, never felt the need to and mupy dishes never taste of fairy liquid.

Lucisky · 24/07/2017 20:34

My oh always does it. Haven't washed up for ages. That's the deal - I do the cooking!

Crumbs1 · 24/07/2017 21:03

Look around sitting room and say loudly " Whose turn to wash up today?"

Ginmakesitallok · 24/07/2017 21:08

@RupertsMum2 why on earth do you wash things before putting them in the dishwasher??

I just wash dishes in sink of hot soapy water - fresh water as I go if needed. No rinsing.

Cailleach666 · 24/07/2017 21:08

Throw in tablet, close door, press button.

LeakyLittleBoat · 24/07/2017 21:16

I have a horror of washing up bowls. My mum has one and always asks where mine is when she comes to visit. It's just grim, the water can't be changed often enough for me. If it's just a couple of plates and cutlery, they get done with a soap-dispensing brush under very hot running water. Bigger load and I rinse off the excess food/gravy/sauce then straight in the dishwasher.

Alltheusernamesalreadyinuse · 24/07/2017 21:22

I do both! Fill sink with soap abs water and scrub everything with scourer and rinse under running water. My MIL is also a nightmare with the washing up and everything is dirty after she's washed up in our house (I wish she wouldn't bother as i have to do it again! But she won't take no ....!) She has a dishwasher and her husband always rinses before he then loads. So, in her case, I think she just can't remember how to do washing up the old fashioned way, and only washes up at my house to create a good impression (which backfires massively!!!)

MessyHouse91 · 24/07/2017 22:02

@Alltheusernames Absolutely infurating! Just won't take no and you spend the next two weeks finding dirty dishes in the cupboard!
