How do you wash up? (lighthearted)

Right, so after finding re-washing everything DP's mum very kindly washed up for me yesterday (still greasy and with food left on it), can I ask what the right way is to do the washing up? Wash under running water, or fill a sink?

At the moment? In the bath. We're having a new kitchen fitted so have no sink to wash up in!! It's a right ball ache so have resorted to paper plates and disposable cutlery.

My DPs wash everything in progressively more filthy water. Particularly after a roast dinner. They always wash greasy pans & potato-ey things first which leaves scummy filthy water.

Then seem surprised when I rewash glasses at a later date before using them. Every. Bloody. Time. They really are grim (& Im very subtle & don't say anything. And I always try to wash up so it gets done properly) God love em.

Grrr my mil does this. Finishes her cup of tea, rinses the cup quickly and pops it on the draining board. Needless to say as soon as she's gone it is swiftly moved from the draining board to the dishwasher! dish washing always needs soap, either washing liquid or the dishwasher imho.

Oh snap, my DP's mother does this too, when visiting us she will often offer to wash the dishes (or do it while we're busy putting DCs to bed) and I find dirty dishes in the cupboard for weeks...it's disgusting. I just tell her she doesn't have to do it, or to use our dishwasher (!!) but it still happens! I think she just puts everything in the washing up bowl with hot water and fairy, then sort of swishes a brush/cloth around (no scrubbing) and puts them in the drying rack, SHE DOES NOT RINSE.

When we visit her it's the same, although she does have a dishwasher she will often wash up by hand and pretty much every glass and cup you pick out the cupboard is grimey or has bits on it! Confused
/rant over

P.S. When I don't use the dishwasher I will soak some items but always wash with soap under hot running water. I may be wasting water but my dishes are sparkly clean.

I'm so pleased it's not just me with the MIL who can't wash up! Don't they notice the greasy glasses and wheetabix crusted bowls?!

Nettletheelf · 25/07/2017 13:16

So pleased that YesIlikeittoo namechecked the Brownie Guide Handbook. That is where I learned the rules of washing up, and what I immediately thought of when I saw the title of this thread.

Also learned the rules of cleaning silverware (if I had any to clean) from the same source. It obviously had a profound effect on me, aged 8.

I wash up with hot, soapy water (the hotter the better).
Am a little OCD with the order I do things 😁 Glasses and mugs first, then cutlery and then everything else in cleanliness order. If the water gets too grim I will change it.
Dishwashers kind of scare me 😕

TwatteryFlowers · 25/07/2017 15:27

I swill the pots under running water to get most of the leftover food off, then I fill the bowl with hot, soapy water. I wash the cups first, then the cutlery, then the plates. I then change the water and wash the pans (occasionally I leave them to soak if the food has been burnt on).

If I am not using the dishwasher for some reason, I rinse stuff and pile it up on the side, fill the sink with soapy water, wash glasses and rinse them under the tap. Often leave the next lot to soak for a while and if the water hasn't seeped out due to the crap sink plug I will wash them and rinse under the tap.
This usually leaves me with the pans and greasy stuff for last so I let the water out and fill them with hot soapy water, soak for a while, empty out and run under the hottest water possible to remove the grease, then wash with a sponge thing or scrub with an abrasive thing, depending on what they are made of.Rinse under the tap.

I do have a drainer type thing that you immerse in water to rinse your dishes so sometimes use that if it is all cups and glasses/side plates. It was from Joseph Joseph and looks like a bowl with handles but has holes in the base and cutlery sections. Otherwise use it as a drainer rather than a strainer.

IDontLookMyAge76 · 28/07/2017 21:57

Just enough hot water and washing up liquid to cover cutlery in washing up bowl then a bit of washing up liquid on a sponge to do chopping board, plates, lids, bowls, cutlery, mugs then pots and pans. Rinsing each item with hot water as I go so by the time I've gotten to the pans, the bowls filled up with enough water for them.

Leave to air dry.

My ils don't rinse and use a dish towel to dry thier dishes, I just can't...

SpareChangeDownTheSofa · 28/07/2017 22:14

Rinse everything with water as hot as I can stand (very hot due to asbestos hands haha).

Fill bowl with same temp water and fairy. Wash cups and glasses first then cutlery, then bowls/plates in messiest order then pans/baking trays etc. If water needs changing due to grim then must be done whenever needed.

Rinse everything under the same very hot water before putting it on the drying rack (to get suds away and give a final clean).

SnowiestMountain · 28/07/2017 22:23

Mostly use dishwasher but fill a really hot sink, put cups & glasses in, leave for about 10 mins until water is warm enough for hands then wash everything and rinse in middle/little sink, I have been known to rewash stuff, mainly shoddily done by DH!
