WIBU to cancel my order over this?

I'm having a new washing machine, tumble drier and dishwasher delivered from AO tomorrow. All the way through ordering and changing the delivery date, the service has been absolutely fab, the website is user friendly and the phone system actually recognises your phone number so you don't have to confirm your order number each time you call up. Dead impressed so far!

I had a phone call this evening (they actually called DP but he gave them my number, which is another thread entirely) trying to sell me some sort of extended warranty type thing. For £15 a month or so for the three appliances, they'll replace them when they pack in. I told the bloke I wasn't interested (I've never been a fan of warranties, I've found they have all sorts of ways of not paying out). I pointed out that, if I put £15 a month away, in 3 years or so I could replace the appliances I just bought myself (we've bought beko so not massively expensive), at which point I could shop around, get the best deal or choose to upgrade.

He then starts talking about how things aren't built to last any more, while you'd hope I get three years out of my brand new appliances they get a lot of phone calls when they break down before that. Apparently if you do more than 4 loads of washing a week (doesn't everybody?) you're considered a heavy user, and it's much more likely to break down in as little as two years.

Obviously a bit pissed off at this, I called the call centre back, saying that I was a bit irked that someone has called me before I even get my order to tell me they might break down in two years! I got the usual 'thanks for your feedback'.

Would it be unreasonable to cancel the order over this, considering even their own staff don't have that much faith in their product? And am I unreasonable to expect at least three years use out of brand new appliances?

I would cancel the order and tell them why you're doing it.

I'd then go and order from a local company or John Lewis. They usually match other companie prices and the service is usually very good.

Our dryer packed up over the weekend. It was just over 12 months and an AO purchase. We decided to replace from elsewhere as where sick of the hard sell extended warranty malarkey. It is certainly full on from AO 😞

PyongyangKipperbang · 25/07/2017 01:39

Given that it only lasted 12 months you might have a case under the "reasonable life expectancy". A tumble dryer would reasonably be expected to last longer than a year, I would look into it and go back to the manufacturer.

Keep the order as is, if you need the stuff. I agree that the hard sell is irritating, but that's what they do.

I had a Beko fridge from my GD place after he died, he'd had it 4 years and I've had it nearly two, & it's still going strong.

I have a policy with D&G that covers tumbly, WM & DW & costs 5.99 pm. My Indesit machine lost the ability to spin last October, was about 3 years old (averaging 3 washes a day) & the guy came out the next day, called the following day (parts for that machine no longer madeShock)& basically wrote it off. I had a new one delivered at the end of the same week. Did have to pay for delivery though.

I really REALLY want a giant one like they have in the launderette. You could do an entire weeks wash in 35 minutes. But then I'd have to have the giant tumble dryer also...

Not the question asked, but after having a Hotpoint and Zanussi pack up I decided to buy a Beko so it wouldn't matter if it died on me. 5 years on it's had minor glitches, but DH got parts cheap off eBay and used YouTube to fix it up - just in case yours does go wrong in the future, have a look first to see if you can fix it first Grin

JustDontGetItAtAll · 25/07/2017 08:32

AO don't make Beko

Also, they sell most brands to my knowledge. So you'd be hard pushed to find any other brands to buy instead without using AO... Regardless of which you brand you buy, if you buy any from AO you'll still get the same call saying more or less the same thing?

fairgame84 · 25/07/2017 08:44

I love AO but hate their hard sell on warranty. Trying to persuade customers that their brand new appliance is likely to break within 3 years is not great for their reputation imo.

liquidrevolution · 25/07/2017 08:49

Marks Electrical are very good.

I avoided AO last time I replaced white goods because of the hard sell.

Questioningeverything · 25/07/2017 09:47

Just adding my two pennies worth- I've had my beko washing machine four years and it's still brilliant. It was all I could afford (229 or close) bought when I had first ds. Massive drum, used more than the four times a week someone mentioned- I used washable nappies. I'm still really pleased with it, it replaced a candy that just gave up mid cycle 🤷‍♀️

Lostbeyondwords · 25/07/2017 10:02

I got a frdgefreezer from them recently and had the same thing happen. A guy called to confirm the delivery and then wanted to sell the warranty. I declined.

But the service is fab, I wouldn't cancel and didn't even think of it to be honest. I only paid extra for packaging to be removed and they carried the thing in and even plugged it in for me, leaving enough space for me to reach and turn it on once it'd been sat for a while. Keep your order and don't worry about it.

Bitconfused75 · 25/07/2017 10:18

I had exactly the same after buying all my appliances for a new kitchen including a deep freeze. Tge young lad was very chatty and was doing ok till he asked me what the freezer was for. He was a bit shocked when I told him it was to store the bodies in!
I also worked out the maths and could have bought new appliances with the money shelled out.
But service was good so I would go with them again - just ignore the call - they are on a script and on commission.

Until Brexit, white goods are already covered for 6 years anyway

europa.eu/youreurope/citizens/consumers/shopping/guarantees-returns/united-kingdom/index_en.htm

(Don't worry, that'll be the first law to go, come March 2019).

AlletrixLeStrange · 25/07/2017 12:06

I've had my Beko washing machine for 6 years now, no problems and does at least 7 loads a week.
If I ever have problems with products I argue my consumer rights which covers you for 5 years, I've never lost. In fact, just about to pick up my new (free) iPhone, 3 years since I got the first one Smile
