WIBU to cancel my order over this?

I'm having a new washing machine, tumble drier and dishwasher delivered from AO tomorrow. All the way through ordering and changing the delivery date, the service has been absolutely fab, the website is user friendly and the phone system actually recognises your phone number so you don't have to confirm your order number each time you call up. Dead impressed so far!

I had a phone call this evening (they actually called DP but he gave them my number, which is another thread entirely) trying to sell me some sort of extended warranty type thing. For £15 a month or so for the three appliances, they'll replace them when they pack in. I told the bloke I wasn't interested (I've never been a fan of warranties, I've found they have all sorts of ways of not paying out). I pointed out that, if I put £15 a month away, in 3 years or so I could replace the appliances I just bought myself (we've bought beko so not massively expensive), at which point I could shop around, get the best deal or choose to upgrade.

He then starts talking about how things aren't built to last any more, while you'd hope I get three years out of my brand new appliances they get a lot of phone calls when they break down before that. Apparently if you do more than 4 loads of washing a week (doesn't everybody?) you're considered a heavy user, and it's much more likely to break down in as little as two years.

Obviously a bit pissed off at this, I called the call centre back, saying that I was a bit irked that someone has called me before I even get my order to tell me they might break down in two years! I got the usual 'thanks for your feedback'.

Would it be unreasonable to cancel the order over this, considering even their own staff don't have that much faith in their product? And am I unreasonable to expect at least three years use out of brand new appliances?

I would cancel the order because it's a Becko. They don't have a great track record.

BoffinMum · 24/07/2017 21:05

I have a Miele WM that doesn't spin properly after 3 years 10 months and one repair, and a Miele TD that has given up the ghost after 5 years 10 months and one repair (it nearly caught fire the first time, when it was 2 years 11 months, as it had an electrical manufacturing fault and the cables inside had disintegrated). The engineer that came last time said they are cutting corners on the manufacturing right, left and centre. I think the reality is pretty much all white goods are crap. I have also had problems with warranties not paying out, FWIW. The most memorable was when my John Lewis fridge freezer packed up in August and they told me I would need to wait two weeks for a repair 'because it wasn't a priority appliance'. I mean, WTAF? They sounded like the NHS on a bad day.

This is annoyingly op. Currys told me that my microwave would blow up in less than 2 yearsHmm. I declined to buy it and Panasonic were definitely bot impressed when I told them what Currys were saying.

MessyHouse91 · 24/07/2017 21:53

@AnneElliott ooh good idea, I wonder how pleased Beko would be if they knew I was being told I couldn't rely on their appliances for long.

We have extended warranty that covers all of our white goods. Similar cost to what you have been quoted. It covers a yearly valet for each piece and my dishwasher has broken down twice in 4 years and my dryer has Brocken down once. I like the reassurance that I am covered. Never had any issues with them fixing the equipment either.

I clicked on this knowing it would be fucking AO!!!

I ordered a washing machine a few years ago online, all good, done and dusted just talking to my computer. Then some #### calls me, patronisingly telling me my new washing machine was sooo much more efficient and would save me so much money, I was Wtf?! Bear in mind my pre child background is engineering. So, the guy speels absolute shite and I flipped as he was trying to sell me some extra insurance product. I cancelled the order there and then and told him why - he was deceitful and was preying on vulnerable people that may believe the crap he was selling, I was so angry! Blush A day later, customer services phoned me to ask why I'd cancelled, so I recalled everything, then got some crappy apology letter 2 months later.

I would never order anything from AO! Co op electrical much better Wink

thecatsarecrazy · 24/07/2017 22:14

I hate this. We treated ourselves to a new coffee machine at the weekend for £40 then he tried to sell some £10 cover. Hmm

Mehfruittea · 24/07/2017 22:19

Formal complaint. It's not on but don't cancel if you actually want them.

I've bout Smeg for my last 2 washers. The first lasted 6 years and I'm on 4 years with its replacement. I'm defo a heavy user on 8-10 washes per week. Jesus. I'd want more than 2 years and would argue the shit out of the Consumer Rights Act.

MGFM · 24/07/2017 22:22

It was through currys

Longdistance · 24/07/2017 22:23

Erm, my Beko washing machine lasted 14 years, and that's why I bought another one. The matching fridge freezer only got chucked out last month, and that was 17 years old.

My new Beko washes brilliantly, and have never had a problem with it in the 3 years I've had it. However, the Indesit tumble dryer was one of those that caught fire. Took them 2 years to come and sort it Hmm

These companies do tend to try sell the warranty (which is useless) just tell them to sling their hook!

onehappypanda · 24/07/2017 22:24

Argh I had this

"For the price of a bottle of wine a week..."
"Pal, I would MUCH rather have the wine"

Really really pushy, and our appliances are fine three years on despite heavy use, so we're quids in.

user1482443190 · 24/07/2017 22:25

My quoted insurance was £100+ per year for a washing machine, which I didn't take out, as the cheap £210 machine came with a 1 year warranty. So, they want £100 for the first year, which they, or I without their assistance can claim without cost? Er, no thanks!

In the past I've taken out a retrospective insurance policy with domestic and general for a manufacturer repair, things may have changed now, but when I called the manufacturer helpline (Bosch at the time) I was put through to D&G and paid for S years cover for a hefty repair. I don't know if that's doable now as over 10 years ago, might be worth investigation on Money Saving Expert.

OlennasWimple · 24/07/2017 22:27

Our Beko washing machine and tumble dryer lasted five and seven years respectively, including two house moves...

PoohBearsHole · 24/07/2017 22:30

they will still offer it to you when it's out of warranty 🤔 not much point in buying it to be honest until it breaks 😂

starzig · 24/07/2017 22:31

My beko fridge lasted over 10 years and my beko washing machine us about 8 years old now.

londonrach · 24/07/2017 22:36

Never understood why people bother with warranties. You just contact the company if it breaks within 6 years if its an expensive item (kettle, toaster excluded) and they have to repair it. Goggle it. Im attached one article. Just getting my 5 year heated airer replaced on friday. Got my faulty one year phone replaced last week. (Softwear issue long standing) ''Shoppers are being sold short when expensive electrical goods break down. If a TV or fridge packs up just one day after an initial one-year guarantee, customers are told they have to pay for the repair - but the truth is that retailers may be liable for up to six years. '' (www.theguardian.com/money/2006/mar/25/consumernews.howtocomplain)

WeAllHaveWings · 24/07/2017 22:46

Each time I've bought from them in the past they've called for a chat to make sure I am happy with my new appliance, asking why I choose to buy from them and then they ask about the insurance and I always say no and they always take my first no without any problem/pressure.

Never had any problem with them, until my last order, where I took time off work 3 times(!!), the first time they called to say it had got damaged in their warehouse and they didn't want to send me damaged goods (okay these things happen), the replacement was damaged on the supplier lorry (had a call at 8pm the night before it was due to arrive), 3rd attempt it was delivered. Felt as if I was being lied to (2 out of 3 damaged?), so wont buy from them again as my annual leave is worth more than the 20 quid I saved.

elevenclips · 24/07/2017 22:48

Disgraceful hard sell on the extended warranty policy. Next time you should just say "no thank you" rather than giving reasons - any reason you give they can pick apart in some way. If they push for reasons (sometimes they do) tell them you live next door to your sister so it won't be a problem if they break down. They can't argue with that!

Modern appliances are shit though, really disgraceful. I do a lot of washing (family, sports etc) and I just broke a machine in under 3.5 yrs. not a good reason to take out their warranties. If the warranty was in your interests, it wouldn't be in their interests - it can only work one way! They sell through fear. My mil was paying hundreds Sad every year to insure her washer, dishwasher, tumble and fridge (I think). Her and fil are just ordinary pensioners in a little bungalow and the bastards had scared them about appliances breaking and not being able to afford repair/replacement. I told my mil to stop the payments right away as she was paying more than the replacement cost. Out of the thousands they stole from her over the years, they replaced one crappy appliance (rubbish brand, cheap appliance). Just corporate greed like everything else.
But don't cancel the order, you need the appliances! Just don't shop with them again.

blankface · 24/07/2017 22:50

I bought a Candy washing machine as a cheap stop-gap. It's been used in 2 houses and survived a rural bumpy journey in the back of a van without the drum being secured.
16 years later, it's still going strong.

PyongyangKipperbang · 24/07/2017 22:50

Warranty sales people have to hit targets and will say whatever it takes to get you to buy the product, its annoying but it would be the same wherever you bought from.

I did buy the £4 a month cover from Currys for our washing machine because we are very heavy users of white goods given that there are 7 of us in the house, 4 of which are school aged kids. Sudden break downs of appliances that are not financially viable to repair are a common occurrence so it is worth it. Despite that, I still got a hard sell to take an extended warranty from the makers.

Its annoying but wont change if you cancel the order, they will still do it and so will whoever else you go with.

user1482443190 · 24/07/2017 22:57

Elevenclips - that was exactly my argument with AO when they tried their hard sell with me, they rely on scaring vulnerable people into parting with so much money. Really smarmy sales person in my experience. Complete toads.

Lobber · 24/07/2017 22:58

Op, I have just last night ordered 3 appliances from AO so this morning got the warranty phone call.
One of my appliances is an American style fridge so my warranty quote was £18pm. One of my items (Samsung) has a 5 yr manufacturers warranty with it. Five years of £18pm = £1079!!
I could replace my fridge altogether lol.
Computer says Noooooo! Grin

wheresmyphone · 24/07/2017 23:03

My Mielie TD is rubbish too just for the record.
Sorry for hijack Smile

GinSoakedTwitchyPony · 24/07/2017 23:10

Interesting thread.
The only thing I've bought so far from AO was a blender and nobody tried to sell me anything else. However, I've been thinking about buying a couple of large appliances from them. If I'm going to get warranty hassle I'll order from elsewhere.

panda, loved your wine response!

rachlooneytune · 24/07/2017 23:10

I wouldn't cancel the order as it will probably be the same no matter where u purchase from unfortunately. I had the same from currys when I purchased my fridge washing machine and cooker. Started with multiple phone calls then letters!!! So pushy! Maybe a letter of complaint. But honestly I don't think they give a rats ass about anything than squeezing extra money out of u.

It's so annoying I swear they build the stuff to break within 3 years on purpose.

My grannies Zannussi washing machine just broke a few years ago - she had it 25 years!!! We used to joke it was older than me! She bought a new one ( can't remember which brand and it broke after 3.5 years) she was devastated.
