Who was BU - woman or teen?

On holiday, at a large theme park, queue for a rolller coaster. Rule is the you must leave everything in lockers at entrance to ride including sunglasses, mobiles, cash etc. There is no explanation for this rule but given that the coaster turns you upside down more then once I'd assume it is to prevent items being thrown out and being either broken, or causing serious harm to people in the ground. You have to pass through metal detector door to access ride.

Group of three teens ahead of us. One teen decides she can't be separated from her mobile so slips it in her shoe. Woman behind me sees her do this. Teen passes through door, door beeps, they "wand" her body but not feet and are about to wave her through when woman pipes up that she has a phone in her shoe. Stand up row ensues between teen who tells woman to mind her own, and woman who tells teen off for being irresponsible and thinking rules don't apply to her. Security chucks teen off ride. Lots of muttering in line about keeping out of things which don't concern you.

The teen though if it had broken it would have been their own fault.

Covfefe · 23/07/2017 21:01

Well mobile in shoe isn't likely to fall out so I'd have let it lie. I'd have piped up if it were likely to be flung out at anyone.

YorksMa · 23/07/2017 21:02

Obviously the teen was 100% in the wrong. Who knows why that rule is in place? Probably excellent safety reasons. She may have been putting other's safety at risk. Good on the woman for speaking up.

Justhadmyhaircut · 23/07/2017 21:03

Flying phone in the face wouldn't have been funny for the rest of the queue. .
Doubt shoe would have kept it in. .

PoppyPopcorn · 23/07/2017 21:03

I would imagine that once past the security teen would have removed phone from shoe and replaced in pocket.

What did it have to do with the woman though. She should've minded her own business and if phone got broke it would have been the lasses own fault. I can't imagine, as a grown up, telling tales on another person unless there was a danger to someone of course.

RosieCockle · 23/07/2017 21:05

What if it fell out her shoe/pocket and hit you?

AlternativeTentacle · 23/07/2017 21:05

What did it have to do with the woman though

Well, everything bearing in mind she might get a phone slammed in her face.

Fairenuff · 23/07/2017 21:06

Teen was BU.

loubar101 · 23/07/2017 21:06

I'm normally one to say keep your nose out over minor things BUT I'm very wary over rollercoasters and safety so would of probably had to say something. I know the chances are minute but it could of fallen onto the track and caused a carriage to hit it/derail. Never seen a metal detector for roller coaster though so they must have good reason for one. Can't say I would appreciate being hit on the head from a phone falling at that height

PoppyPopcorn · 23/07/2017 21:06

These are very high speed coasters - a flying smartphone in the face could have really hurt someone else on the ride or someone walking underneath.

Teen most disgruntled but was being hushed by her friends who appeared to be worried about being escorted out of the park.

OP posts:
abbsisspartacus · 23/07/2017 21:06

Why should she mind her own business? Someone could have been badly hurt FFS

craftsy · 23/07/2017 21:07

It could have flown out of the girls hand or pocket and endangered the other theme park users, one of whom was the woman. So it was 100% her business.

Soubriquet · 23/07/2017 21:09

Teen was bu yes

I'm guessing the lockers actually locked too so there was no real excuse

But wow what rollacoaster is this?! Sounds very high tech to have lockers, metal detectors and a hand wand

PoppyPopcorn · 23/07/2017 21:12

Dragon Challenge at Universal in Orlando- they have the same lockers at other similar rides.

OP posts:
Soubriquet · 23/07/2017 21:13

Dragon challenge....that sounds familiar.

Is that the one with the fire and ice dragons and it used to race each other but after an accident it now takes off separately?

Been on that if it is Grin

Clandestino · 23/07/2017 21:15

The teen was completely in the wrong and the woman was right. And people who had a go at the woman were simply morons.

Fruitcorner123 · 23/07/2017 21:16

Definitely teen was unreasonable. I would have spoken up too.

emilybrontescorset · 23/07/2017 21:18

I was about to say we were scanned in universal it's the same ride. There are clear, visable signs telling you to put everything in the free lockers provided. There are also signs telling you to turn back and proceed to the lockers if you have any loose items whatsoever on you.
The teen was wrong, if you dropped a phone at that speed it could knock someone unconscious.

TheHobbitMum · 23/07/2017 21:19

Teen was BU their was no way the phone would stay in the shoes, I would think the plan was to film the ride. If so the force would've more than likely sent the phone flying at great speed and would've been a danger to everyone else. They would've had these rules in place for a reason :)

emmyrose2000 · 23/07/2017 21:20

The woman was 100% right and the teen 100% wrong.

I'm curious as to what type of shoes she was wearing that one could hide a phone in them.

Were you the woman, OP?

PoppyPopcorn · 23/07/2017 21:20

Yes its the one with the two coasters red and blue and once bear the front you choose which one you want to go on. It's very fast!

OP posts:
Migraleve · 23/07/2017 21:22

What did it have to do with the woman though. She should've minded her own business and if phone got broke it would have been the lasses own fault.

It had everything to do with the woman, it put the woman at risk. While yes a broken phone would have been the teens fault, the woman was quite right to speak up and ensure the idiotic action of the teen did not endanger anyone's health, this would also have been the teens fault, but better eagle eyed bystanders prevent injury rather than assign blame!

PoppyPopcorn · 23/07/2017 21:22

Gosh no I wasn't the woman, I'm far too British to speak out and challenge someone like that, I would have just given her passive aggressive looks instead. She had sort of converse boot things on and slipped the phone in vertically around her ankle.

ExcitingButScaryTimesAhead · 23/07/2017 21:22

Teen at fault 100%
