Who was BU - woman or teen?

On holiday, at a large theme park, queue for a rolller coaster. Rule is the you must leave everything in lockers at entrance to ride including sunglasses, mobiles, cash etc. There is no explanation for this rule but given that the coaster turns you upside down more then once I'd assume it is to prevent items being thrown out and being either broken, or causing serious harm to people in the ground. You have to pass through metal detector door to access ride.

Group of three teens ahead of us. One teen decides she can't be separated from her mobile so slips it in her shoe. Woman behind me sees her do this. Teen passes through door, door beeps, they "wand" her body but not feet and are about to wave her through when woman pipes up that she has a phone in her shoe. Stand up row ensues between teen who tells woman to mind her own, and woman who tells teen off for being irresponsible and thinking rules don't apply to her. Security chucks teen off ride. Lots of muttering in line about keeping out of things which don't concern you.

I wouldn't fancy having my teeth knocked out by a flying phone tbh.

Soubriquet · 23/07/2017 21:25

Converse boots?

No way would that have stayed.

Yes I remember now the ride now.
Don't remember the security though but I did ride it back when it duelled.

SaucyJack · 23/07/2017 21:25

According to Wikipedia, someone was actually blinded in one eye as a direct result of something falling from this particular ride.

Every day's a school day. The teen was being U, obv.

Coffeethrowtrampbitch · 23/07/2017 21:28

The teen was wrong.

I was in the queue for the Smiler three weeks ago, and someone's vaping device fell on the netting and absolutely smashed into it, breaking into pieces.
If it had hit a person it would have done real damage, the speed and force it hit with were shocking.

Well done that woman.

PoppyPopcorn · 23/07/2017 21:29

Wow, didn't know about the blinding incident but having been in it and experienced the speed I can see how easily it could happen. I also had to take my flip flops off and sit in them so they didn't fly off mid-ride.

Of course woman was right, teen was vbu

GoldenFleck · 23/07/2017 21:33

Teen was wrong. What if the mobile flew out whilst on the ride and hit somebody in the face at high speed?

PovertyPain · 23/07/2017 21:34

Well done, that woman. I would shake her hand, if I was there. Little arse of a teenager thought she was above the rules and there could have been a serious incident, as a result. I bet the cheeky wee git wouldn't have owned up if her phone had caused an injury.

caoraich · 23/07/2017 21:35

Oh god, Dragon Challenge - woman was absolutely in the right.

Last time I went on that I very nearly lost my halter necked top- the force of the ride undid the knot at the back and by the end it had rolled down under one boob! Phone would have definitely flown out of an unzipped pocket and even possibly a zipped one

Gemini69 · 23/07/2017 21:35

I believe the Teenager was breaking the rules... end of x

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 23/07/2017 21:36

The teen

I have watched final destination 2 a few too many times

UnicornSparkles1 · 23/07/2017 21:36

I'd have spoken up in the same situation. She could have been stupid enough to try to take a selfie or anything once on the ride, endangering everyone else on the ride. Well done that woman.

winglesspegasus · 23/07/2017 21:37

carnival/theme park rides have
height
weight
clothing
and other safety rules for JUST that reason safety

hats off to the adult for pointing out the intitled little brats scam

user1497480444 · 23/07/2017 21:37

teen was being a stupid arrogant cunt. I'm glad she was thrown out. Mobile phone flying off and hitting a spectator could have cracked someones skull.

rainbowpie · 23/07/2017 21:38

Teen is BU. I'd have said something too tbh. I avoid confrontation as much as I can but I'll put on my busybody hat to stop someone getting a phone to the face at 1000000000mph.

KingPrawnOkay · 23/07/2017 21:43

Teen was being very unreasonable and it's those who ruin it for everyone. Large majority of ride accidents are caused by rider neglect, and if she'd got hurt by a flying object she'd be the first to scream people weren't following rules. Looked at Wikipedia and apparently the poor man actually had to have his entire eyeball removed because of the injury Shock. Glad the woman said something.

user1498911589 · 23/07/2017 21:46

Yes, the teen was wrong. The only items that should be taken through are things like asthma inhalers.

dinosaurkisses · 23/07/2017 21:46

The teen was being an idiot.

We went there last year, and the track of the coasters go over parts of the crowd. Allegedly (DH heard from a staff member) a few years ago someone had coins in their pocket and one fell out and blinded some poor soul walking in the crowd under the ride in one eye.

If something the size and weight of a coin can do that, I'd hate to see what damage a smart phone would do coming at you from that height and speed.

TroelsLovesSquinkies · 23/07/2017 21:47

Teen was very unreasonable.
Have you ever looked under those rides in the fenced off areas? All sorts of odd flip flops trainers and stuff. Nothing is really on tight enough to stay on and a phone wouldn't stand a chance down her shoe.

PovertyPain · 23/07/2017 21:47

caorich. I'm sorry, but that's hilarious. No problem if you're like me, but you're lucky you didn't end up with a black eye if you're like my youngest. 😂

winglesspegasus · 23/07/2017 21:48

www.themeparkinsider.com/flume/201501/4385/

good idea except you KNOW the dumbshit wants to take a selfie(ish)

and
tips for guest use:
Obey listed age, height, weight, and health restrictions.
Observe all posted ride safety rules, and follow all verbal instructions given by ride operators or provided by recorded announcements.
Keep hands, arms, legs and feet inside the ride at all times.
Secure all loose articles, including wallets, change, sunglasses, cell phones, and hats.
Do not board a ride impaired.
Remain seated in the ride until it comes to a complete stop and you are instructed to exit.
Always use safety equipment provided and never attempt to wriggle free of or loosen restraints or other safety devices.
Parents should make sure their children can understand and follow safe and appropriate ride behavior.
Never force anyone, especially children, to ride attractions they don’t want to ride.
If you see any unsafe behavior or condition on a ride, report it to a supervisor or manager immediately.

Flopjustwantscoffee · 23/07/2017 21:48

It should have been obvious it was a safety issue from the metal detectors - if it was just to stop damage to people's possessions then having signs and lockers would have completely covered the theme park damages wise. If they have gone to the effort and expense of metal detectors then obviously there is a good reason. Stupid teen.

KimmySchmidt1 · 23/07/2017 21:49

Somebody's got to speak up - you can't rely on most people - who are cowards and numpties - to prevent an unnecessary death. That thing could have smashed a child on the head if it had come out of her pocket and fallen a long way (where she no doubt would have transferred it).

Pantryboy · 23/07/2017 21:49

I think good on the lady for saying something . If it had fallen out of the girls shoe and been smashed to bits then the girl would have been really upset.

SirGawain · 23/07/2017 21:52

Why do people think that rule don't apply to them. I volunteer for a large tourist attraction and we prohibit a particular popular activity which can be dangerous. you would not believe the number of people who think that they should be exempt. No one else of course just them!
