To expect to be able to make a purchase at closing time.

I was in Laura Ashley today just before closing looking to buy a picture, The assistant showed me the display item which was still marked up at full price and then went over to the tills to check the sale price for me.

Yes I'd like to buy it I replied - only to be told that sorry you can't do that today as the tills are closed now. I checked my phone, bang on 6pm, closing time. I queried this as I have never come across this before. I have been in plenty of shops that advise customers to go to the tills at closing time, but none who refuse to make a sale on the dot of closing.

I said as much to the assistant who looked apologetic and consulted senior assistant. The tills close themselves down at 6pm she advised me. if you want to buy it you'll have to come back in the morning. Don't worry the sale is on until Monday.

Is it unreasonable to expect to complete a purchase when I am already in the shop at closing time?

All tills automatically close down in large stores.

They sort of "log off" basically and there is nothing the store can do about it as it is centrally managed.

Odd but a fact - what happened to you, happened to me once at my local Tesco!

38cody · 24/07/2017 18:27

Your the worst kind of customer op. Anyone on here who has worked in retail or does will tell you that. May i ask why at closing time did you decide you needed this photo frame so badly ? Surely if it were a gift you could have bought it online or earlier in the day ? YABVVU. People need to learn this sort of thing is so antisocial and needs to be stopped

I totally disagree - if the tills shut down at the same time as the door closes then that is poor company policy. The door should shut, no more entry's allowed and remaining customers told to proceed to checkout as tills will close shortly.
Anything less is just poor. Ustonef service. Staff should be paid for all minutes worked but ultimately you shouldn't be refusing sales of in store customers. Not the fault of the staff but poor customer service.

Actual mega lol at going into a shop near closing being antisocial Grin I missed that the first time.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 24/07/2017 18:44

And 'I' as a word - is always I, not i

Personally i know that 'i' isn't correct

Wouldnt write it that way, wouldnt type it on official documents

But i dont actually give a shit..ive switched off the punctuation on the ipad as it was pissing me off

Correcting peoples grammar, punctuation and spelling is neither big nor clever

Luggage list on internal UK connection flight. Stopping off at hotel overnight so went to nearby supermarket for quick dash to get essentials and some shorts, teeshirts, swimsuit. Announcement for customers to make way to be checkouts as till close at 10pm. Manager came rushing up to tell me I needed to get in queue as unable to serve if after closing time even if waiting in queue. This was 2006! and has been in force for years. Against the law to sell after official shop hours whether tills lock or not.

EvansOvalPies · 24/07/2017 18:52

38Cody - could you please explain what Ustonef service is? I've never heard of it in my entire life (and I've lived for many a fine year, let me tell ye)

Polarbearflavour · 24/07/2017 18:55

Reading some comments here make me so glad I work in an office and not in retail now!

Also - they are far worse things in life to get upset about. Let it go OP!

Hi sorry I've not been around and didn't realise this thread was still being added to.
The picture as some have asked, was a world map printed on wooden board. So no flowery tat.
It was on display on the wall for £95 and online for £53. I don't know anyone who wouldn't query such a discrepancy.

I'm astounded at the attitude of so many on here. The worst type of customer, being a twat comments. I really hadn't realised that I'd be viewed like that and can't say that I care for it much.

I generally avoid stores where I experience negative attitudes from the staff. Hence I tend to stick to a few stores. Laura Ashley has now moved in my estimation and I can live without them. It has been pointed out that they can happily live without me so there will be no future issues.

As I said previously most of my shopping is online which it seems I am best suited to. No more upsetting shop workers in the myriad of ways I'm now aware of as a result of this thread.
I don't think I am an unreasonable shopper, despite many views here to the contrary. I'm certain that shopping has altered during the few years I've moved to online and not for the better. A few people think that I'm entitled because I live in London. Perhaps this does make a difference as I've never experienced this before in London although it sounds to be perfectly commonplace outside.

Thanks everyone for their views. It certainly makes interesting reading.

Closing time is exactly that...they close. The staff shouldnt have to wait around for customers that have had all day to buy something. Surely you knew when you went in that it shuts at 6

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 24/07/2017 18:56

evans

Tried googling ustonef

Nothing came up ...maybe its a grammar thing

VeryButchyRestingFace · 24/07/2017 18:57

What does this mean please?

I only ask because, well,

If you're going to be arsey enough to correct someone else's grammar, you really should make sure that your post is perfect. I spotted two mistakes in yours.

Oochiewalla · 24/07/2017 19:00

Bottom line is that YOU never evtered the store with enough time to complete your purchase!
Entitled behaviour expecting sales assistants to work overtime!

Epilepticmummy · 24/07/2017 19:00

I can see it from both points of view however, I totally agree with you on this one, had the product been marked properly you would have easily been able to buy it in time and as the worker actually took it to the till to work out the price she could have easily carried on with that sale after all she was halfway there! Many shops don't let people enter within a certain amount of minutes before closing to assure the shop closes on time and everyone gets home on time however you were still in the shop so they really should have honoured it.

CockacidalManiac · 24/07/2017 19:01

That doesn't mean you can view the rest of your customers as dicks.

There's one of those straw men again.

VeryButchyRestingFace · 24/07/2017 19:01

I spotted two mistakes in yours.

Psst, was one of them the "entry's" gaffe?

CockacidalManiac · 24/07/2017 19:02

Certainly was

CockacidalManiac · 24/07/2017 19:06

Wasn't Ustonef a Russian actor and raconteur?

EvansOvalPies · 24/07/2017 19:07

Oh yes - I was just going to say about the entry's.
I'm not normally one for pulling people up on grammatical or spelling errors, but when people try to belittle others for the same , then they are fair game.

Still would like an explanation about ustonef. I've Googled . . . nothing.
Cory - over to you, darling

I think it was you. Correcting elementary spelling and grammar doesn't make you look clever and it's not the done thing. It also opens your own posts to scrutiny, as you'll have discovered Grin

clarkl2 · 24/07/2017 19:11

Would you expect a drink after last orders? Dipshit. Have a bit respect for the staff serving you for a start - buses/trains to catch, families to see, pets to feed!

EvansOvalPies · 24/07/2017 19:11

OP - A few people think that I'm entitled because I live in London

I didn't know you lived in London, you are entitled just because you are entitled. I live in Surrey (much naicer than London, doncha know) Smile

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 24/07/2017 19:12

I got that one very

I am well proud Smile
