To expect to be able to make a purchase at closing time.

I was in Laura Ashley today just before closing looking to buy a picture, The assistant showed me the display item which was still marked up at full price and then went over to the tills to check the sale price for me.

Yes I'd like to buy it I replied - only to be told that sorry you can't do that today as the tills are closed now. I checked my phone, bang on 6pm, closing time. I queried this as I have never come across this before. I have been in plenty of shops that advise customers to go to the tills at closing time, but none who refuse to make a sale on the dot of closing.

I said as much to the assistant who looked apologetic and consulted senior assistant. The tills close themselves down at 6pm she advised me. if you want to buy it you'll have to come back in the morning. Don't worry the sale is on until Monday.

Is it unreasonable to expect to complete a purchase when I am already in the shop at closing time?

And no one has shown me a post where a SA has said that at 6pm they down tools and refuse to serve

But that's exactly what happened in this situation, the OP asked the SA to check the price on the till (presumably around 5.58pm) and on being told the price the SA then said 'but you can't buy it as the till has closed down'. Confused.

This thread is going round in circles Grin - if, and I still find it incredibly hard to believe, the tills genuinely 'shut off' at 6pm precisely at LA then surely any competent SA would made this clear to the customer during the conversation about checking the price.

presumably around 5.58pm

Grin OP was in just before closing. I estimate 5.57 if that's what we're doing now Wink.
OP is the last person in the shop, she asks the SA to locate the 1 metre wide wooden plaque and they both carry it to the till. OP queries the price at till, says is not the price she saw online. SA checks this for OP but, unfortunately, Is now 6pm and the shop till has shut down. OP escorted out in indignant rage.

Seriously. The SA was obviously helping OP throughout, and rushing. It was in their interests to make the sale as they were left to cart the huge monstrosity of wooden 'art' back to the display alone.

ragwort

I prefer to believe that people aren't lying

SA said till had closed, even went to find a manager

People on here have said they work places were there is an automatic till switch oss

So the SA..In this instance....did not down tools and refuse to serve

In the same way that to my recollection no one on this thread has said they would do the same

The other day the tills went down in the middle of the day, we could still trade but some customers preferred not to.....interesting that some of people on here think that we would be lying

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 25/07/2017 13:53

And im interested...

How many on here would be happy if the SA said

Shop is about to shut and i wont have time to check the price...you will have to buy it at full price

There would be a post on here saying what a con it was

Really unfortunately for the OP the till timed out after the price was checked and the customer agreed to pay

Incredibly frustrating but in no way shape or form the SA fault or the customers

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 25/07/2017 13:54

Oss..whats an oss

Technical term...means off

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 25/07/2017 15:38

Oh the relief beyond

I hate being the last on a thread
