To feel so angry with Boots re: the MAP

I can't believe that in 2017 we are still having to fight to rid the world of sexist and outdated attitudes to women and sex.... Honestly it makes my blood boil when they refused to reduce the price because they believe it would be used 'inappropriately'. Is anyone else boycotting Boots?

According to the news this morning, they've apologised and are looking at cheaper alternatives.

VestalVirgin · 22/07/2017 11:07

There's a whole thread on it here on AIBU! So don't worry, you are by far not the ony one boycotting them!

FourEyesGood · 22/07/2017 11:07

They've recognised their mistake.

Oh their apology is very much a 'sorry but not really sorry and we aren't changing the price'

Are they part of the under 19s scheme?

It's not really sexist is it? Women are at risk of getting PG if they have an UPSI. Doesn't mean she has to pay for it?

I don't think it should be too cheap - we (as couples) need to take responsibility and look at LTM of contraception and look at preventing rather than reacting.

It's not good to be taking the MAP on a regular basis.

Dawndonnaagain · 22/07/2017 11:20

Girl, I doubt that there are many who use it on a regular basis, getting it via the doctor on a regular basis would trigger discussion and buying it would be prohibitively expensive from many. Contraception fails on occasion. This should be available for all who need it, when they need it. My personal opinion is that it should be free or available at minimal cost.

BunnyCupBows · 22/07/2017 11:24

They've only decided to look at it because MPs have put pressure on them and not because it's morally the right thing to do.

Personally I think it should be free along with all other forms of contraception, it's cheaper to take Map than to get an abortion or have a baby.

Not everyone is in a long-term relationship, contraception does fail and 'stealthing' and rape are very real issues many women face.

Glad I'm not the only one outraged.

Redpandaeyes · 22/07/2017 11:30

Girl no it's not good to take it too often but it's much better to take it frequently than to have an unwanted pregnancy! Honestly, how do people not get this?

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 22/07/2017 11:31

@Girl a poster on the other thread mentioned taking it when she was unemployed and living off savings and she had had a contraceptive fail. The MAP is much cheaper than a baby, but it was money she could ill afford and she knew she was paying way more than required . Why should it be so expensive? Not everybody wants or suits LAMs. Not everyone has the immediate choice not to go to Boots.

GirlOnATrainToShite · 22/07/2017 11:34

I used to run a sexual health clinic for young people.

We used to get girls in who used it a lot - even though we tried to promote other methods to them.

GirlOnATrainToShite · 22/07/2017 11:36

LTM of contraception are free!

You can get the MAP free too from your GP.

If you request an emergency appt from your GP for the MAP the have a duty of care to see you.

LittleBooInABox · 22/07/2017 11:41

My GP told me to call an ambulance the other day for serve knee pain. I doubt they actually stick to the duty of care thing anymore. And some women don't want it on their medical records. So... it should be affordable. Espically when Erectile dysfunction patients can get medication on the NHS, but because the MAP is for the benefit of women. Nope.

I'm annoyed but it's highlighted it's cheaper in other places. I won't boycott boots because there number 7 brand works well for my skin.

However if I ever need the MAP I will go else where.

Dawndonnaagain · 22/07/2017 11:47

Girl, there are situations in which it is not possible to get it from the GP. MAP should therefore be freely available.

BunnyCupBows · 22/07/2017 11:47

@girl LTM's don't prevent STI's (personally think condoms should be more freely available) and not everyone suits them and i'm one of those people. You can't always get a GP appointment at the weekends so for many people the only way to access MAP is via a chemist.

I am only just getting up to speed on this story, I don't know what the manufacturing cost of the drug is. Boots is going to have to make profit on items it sells I think off the top of my head a chain like that adds 3-15% as their profit margin.

Does anyone know the production cost of the drug?

GirlOnATrainToShite · 22/07/2017 11:50

Bunny MAP doesn't prevent STIs either Confused

Also you have 72 hours after the UPSI or 5 days with the Ella 1 to access emergency contraception. Although sooner rather than later is best obvs.

I am not defending Boots I am just saying we need to be a bit more responsible for ourselves that's all.

RainbowsAndUnicorn · 22/07/2017 11:50

I imagine lots do use it inappropriately. Many are irresponsible when it comes to brith control, both sexes not just women.

If it's cheaper elsewhere people have a choice. Boots don't have to sell it I presume, so if they do then they can set a price that matches the companies policies etc.

GirlOnATrainToShite · 22/07/2017 11:51

Condoms are freely available....

CoughLaughFart · 22/07/2017 11:52

I notice they don't have a problem flogging 16p boxes of paracetamol. Aren't they worried about making it cheap to overdose?

BeyondThePage · 22/07/2017 11:53

you have 120hrs to get EllaOne for 98% efficacy (or alternatively have an IUD fitted)... five days

Most people could get to a GP, a walk in, a clinic, Tesco, another pharmacy in five days.

IJustLostTheGame · 22/07/2017 11:54

It should be affordable.
Abortions are free on the NHS. Surely the MAP only cuts down on these saving these, plus it would save a lot of pain, stress and heartache?

slightlyglittermaned · 22/07/2017 11:57

YANBU OP it's complete misogynist shite.

Dawndonnaagain · 22/07/2017 11:58

I am just saying we need to be a bit more responsible for ourselves that's all.
There are situations where that is not always possible.
Most people could get to a GP, a walk in, a clinic, Tesco, another pharmacy in five days.
Most is not all.

Condoms are freely available

Dependent on where you live. If you're rural it's actually really hard to access free contraception.

RainbowsAndUnicorn · 22/07/2017 12:01

It is affordable at Boots but it's just cheaper at some other places.

If contraception is used correct (and its available free) then there's no need to have to buy it. So many fail to take responsibility and believe it falls to everyone else.

GirlOnATrainToShite · 22/07/2017 12:01

The sexual health clinic I used to run was in a rural location.

We can make excuses for everything but if you are taking the MAP on a regular basis I think you need to make some changes around your contraception choices.
