State pension

People are being lied to about their chances of ever getting it imo. So they are going to raise it another year. I'm still 25+ years off it. Aibu to think I'll never get it?

I think the message to young people now is work as hard as you can at school, stay in education as long as possible and choose a career wisely as if you love your job then you have no needs to retire early, health permitting.

I am working on the assumption that there will be no state pension when DH and I retire. We have our own private pension, I wish that We could opt out of NI and put that money into our private pension.

Our plan is to grow our homestead so we are as self sufficient as possible in retirement, living off the land. DH fully expects to die of a heart attack splitting firewood in his 80's

The average age of poor health setting in, is 64. Obviously that hides wide disparities. But I am in my mid 50s and know so many people a little bit older who look healthy if you meet them, but have heart problems, cancer or other chronic problems such as arthritis.

Arthritis and really bad back pain are common and not preventable by healthy living.

Thanks Exploded I'll find out what happened after the consultation period closed. It's an interesting article and I'll look into whether the proposal was adopted in full or in part and if there was any likelihood that members would suffer any detriment. If there is to be no detriment and as I work for the public sector (ish) then I don't have an issue with the fund being spent in this way providing my return tracks or exceeds the market average. I have greater issues with unethical investments in a free market to be honest.

One of the country's top actuaries told me that someone in their mid 30s today should realistically expect to get the state pension at 75. Although that was before the BRexit vote - if the economy is screwed it could easily be later

Based on some of the figures on this thread, we will be utterly minted when we retire.
Unlike our dear neighbour (who earned similar amounts to DH) who used to sneer at us for not going on holidays we couldn't afford.
He told us our equity was there to fund our lifestyle. Hmm

Well here we are 12 months away from being mortgage free and all things being equal with a pension income of £60 k

I make no apologies for it, we did nothing, went nowhere until we were financially stable.

LovelyBath77 · 24/07/2017 09:54

We are in 40s and just a few years off paying off the mortgage and with pension pot of 55K in seven years.

I'm still really stressed about this though and don't see us being minted Hmm in any way! With two children thinking might be able to support them in some way, but no it seems like the money may need to support us into retirement. I guess in reality it will mean working longer, or hoping the PIP I get may continue.

I guess it depends how you look at it.

brasty · 24/07/2017 10:53

TroubkeindaFamily Well done. But that really is not an option for most people. Most people do not have that level of income with two people working full time.

LovelyBath77 · 24/07/2017 11:12

Ah see pension income is per year? Yes 60K would make a difference then!
