Would you accept this council house?

Ashkey234 · 19/07/2017 18:12

I'm currently renting a house for £360 per month from a housing association.
Not in the best location.
I bidded on a house (through council ) it's only 7 years old, much better location and massive garden ,£380 per month.
I went for viewing today and I was the only person who turned up.
Anyway if I get offered it,do I take it?
It's going to mean new carpets, decorating.
Luckily the council have just painted all ceilings and all walls white but I would want to put my own stamp on things.
What would you do?
It's great rent price and still leaves us with a lot of spare money in the month for other things.
Is it worth moving for better location ?
Its bigger too.
I'm in two minds

I thought council houses were for those struggling!

tootalbugging · 19/07/2017 22:57

What are you holding out for....Downton Abbey?

Take it and be grateful. You clearly have no idea how lucky you are to have the choice.

coddiwomple · 19/07/2017 22:57

depends on your definition of "struggling"

Did she say she was holding out for another property, or did she say her anxiety made her struggle with the lack of routine and the changes involved with moving house ? Which made her worry abou moving Hmm

Lj8893 · 19/07/2017 23:00

Social housing is not subsidised by anyone's taxes.

The op lives in the north, it is highly unlikely that her house costs the same as a third of a single room in the same area.

Dunno bubbles, and I'm not gonna read nine pages to find out. Still don't see what the actual dilemma is though. It's a no brainer.

bubblesbubbles · 19/07/2017 23:12

Well if you'd read just the op's posts you'd know. Rather then just posting shite that has nothing to do with the poster. Biscuit

I'm obviously missing the point, but what is the problem with white walls and no carpets?

We bought our first house a few months' ago. The carpets were awful, so we pulled them up, sanded the floors, whitewashed and waxed them and put a rug down. They look beautiful. And it cost us £200 to sand (hired a sander for a week) paint and wax all the rooms upstairs.

And we deliberately painted our bedroom white! It looks so crisp, fresh and peaceful. But even if you don't like it, white is so easy to paint over. Confused

Obviously missing the point here but sounds perfect to me!

SerfTerf · 19/07/2017 23:17

Im paying taxes on my shitty minimum wage job to pay for your house and you can afford fucking sky?

The income tax due per week on 40 hours of minimum wage work is £8.94.

Not that council housing is subsidised anyway. It's actually profit generating.

ComputerUserNotTrained · 19/07/2017 23:19

Council housing is for everyone. In the post-War period, when the electorate had a social conscience and their Government acted for the good of the nation, houses were built to be homes and not as investments.

Since then however, thanks to decades of zero investment (blame this on moral bankruptcy and economic illiteracy) there's such a shortage (and in many/most areas it doesn't exist at all) that local authorities have to prioritise to such a degree that you have to be practically destitute to be allocated council (or HA) housing.

It's shit.

But yeah, let's do away with it in the few remaining areas where affordable housing is a thing. Rather that than have bitter people feeling hard done by Hmm

Ceebs85 · 19/07/2017 23:26

I'll have it if you don't want it. I pay £600 for a house that doesn't sound half as good. Just take it, you'd regret turning it down surely and not everything needs doing immediately.

Hotheadwheresthecoldbath · 19/07/2017 23:28

I've painted most of our walls white, took 4 coats to cover the purple.Still have the brown walls to go.
If you have children then bare floorboards are very noisy.I would get a quote from carpet right as it will be easier to choose your date for fitting which just involves letting them in.
Leave the walls for now then you can take your time choosing colours and one less thing to worry about.
Make a list of addresses you need to change and get the post office mail redirection,it is quite expensive but worth it for 6months as you don't need to worry about forgetting to notify anyone.
So confirm with the council and look forward to moving,if this is your dream house you will not have to do this again.

Electrolux all the tenancies in my region are offered under affordable rent, assured tenancy terms. Secure tenancies have long gone.

LeMesmer · 19/07/2017 23:32

Sorry, haven't read the full thread but sterolove they are not 'your tenants'. Hmm. I really hoped that sort of attitude amongst housing workers would have been long gone.

OP, it is difficult and stressful sometimes to move. I have done it many times, but one thing I have learnt is that you can and will sort everything out, even if it does seem overwhelmingly initially. I think you know it would be a good move for you and your family .

LeMesmer · 19/07/2017 23:36

BeepBeepMove FFS before to make idiotic remarks like that you really, really need to educate yourself about the history and purpose of social housing. How can you be so stupid??????

"Ringing every credit card/bank/sky/broadband changing details etc
I know it might sound daft but it's playing on my mind"

Then send them a trackable letter - registered post is it?

Ask them to send a letter to the address to ensure yu know they got it if you really can't face the calls. - and redirect your post for a few weeks to ensure.

bubblesbubbles · 19/07/2017 23:46

Yes it takes two hours to read the ops few posts. And yes you are allowed an opinion, but an opinion on what exactly as you haven't read the thread.
And loon? Nice language, you are a delight.

MommaGee · 19/07/2017 23:48

Don't bid if you don't want to move. Its massively annoying

tootalbugging · 19/07/2017 23:51

Likewise bubbles. An opinion on the OP, or are we not basing it on that anymore?!!!
You clearly have a lot of time on your hands, I don't. So I'm out. Enjoy the moral high ground!

The days of life tenancies are over.
Totally area dependant , majority areas still offer life tenancies, also no higher rent in relation to private either.
