Would you accept this council house?

Ashkey234 · 19/07/2017 18:12

I'm currently renting a house for £360 per month from a housing association.
Not in the best location.
I bidded on a house (through council ) it's only 7 years old, much better location and massive garden ,£380 per month.
I went for viewing today and I was the only person who turned up.
Anyway if I get offered it,do I take it?
It's going to mean new carpets, decorating.
Luckily the council have just painted all ceilings and all walls white but I would want to put my own stamp on things.
What would you do?
It's great rent price and still leaves us with a lot of spare money in the month for other things.
Is it worth moving for better location ?
Its bigger too.
I'm in two minds

£20 extra a month for a bigger house and in a better area sounds like a good deal to me.

Lj8893 · 19/07/2017 18:25

Sounds to me like the only downside is having to get new flooring?

I appriciate this can be pricey but there are many options for this, you can buy carpets and offcuts cheap on eBay, carpet shops etc. Carpetright offer 0% interest finance if that is an option for you?

Heratnumber7 · 19/07/2017 18:26

You don't HAVE to fork out for new carpets, and not straight away either. That's your choice.
Replace them as and when you can afford them. Same with painting the rooms.

If you take the house, how long do you think you will stay there?

If you are going to live there for 20 years + then this is a one off hassle that you won't need to repeat for a very long time.

I suspect you will be kicking yourself in 12 months time if you don't take the option to move.

Ashkey234 · 19/07/2017 18:26

It's literally that, can't get past the decorating bit as my boyfriend works away offshore so it's all on my shoulders.
The thought of that/work etc I'm panicking I won't have enough time to decorate it before we need to leave other house

Some very tough decisions to make I see 🤔

SunnySkiesSleepsintheMorning · 19/07/2017 18:28

It's a no brainier to me. Do it!

Ashkey234 · 19/07/2017 18:28

I know it might seem trivial to some but I do have a health problem too which can get in the way of certain things so that makes me slightly worried about things.
I know I'm being silly and in 6 months il be happy ..it's just seeing past that crappy stage

As long as you get the flooring down, why can't you do whatever else needs done decorating wise once you've moved in?

monkeyfacegrace · 19/07/2017 18:30

Must be fucking awful being you

Ashkey234 · 19/07/2017 18:30

Do you think it's possible to take my carpet up and see if I can use that anywhere? Or Too much hassle?

Lived in my house two years and am still living with plain walls. It is not the end of the world! Changing addresses? Make a list and work your way through it. You can make do with offcuts of carpet for now. Your home does not have to be decorated before you love in.take a while to see what the light is like eye before commiting to colours. Says she, sitting in a magnolia house for almost two.years.

I moved from one HA house to another last year, bigger house and nearer amenities. It was a no brainer for us, DC1 has SN and needed his own room and we were so grateful when this place came up.

TBH if the thought of having to make a few phonecalls and put down flooring (which can be done gradually) are putting you off then I question why your needs put you at the top of the list.

Ashkey234 · 19/07/2017 18:31

Yeah I could do 1 room at a time ..bit of a perfectionist and like everything done at once but I guess that's not always easy.

I've got 1 basic credit card with a low limit (never use it) and broadband is talk talk £28 a month (cheapest one) it's the thought of ringing round

Get your mail redirected when you move. You can get it redirected for up to 12 months I think. That will give you a year to contact banks, credit card companies etc. Even if you just do one a week, you'd have them all done before the redirection runs out.

the chances of any of the carpets you own now being an exact fit for your new house is slim to none!

what flooring is down at the moment? just plain floorboards? is it really essential it all gets done before you move, it's not the worst thing in the world.

Ashkey234 · 19/07/2017 18:33

Does anyone know how much fitting normally Is?

I'll take it if you don't want it

GloGirl · 19/07/2017 18:34

I'm on a bit of a pissy mood today I'll admit, but some people really do like making a drama out of anything.

Not being able to afford £700 on a carpet is one thing but complaining that you'll have to change suppliers. It seems like you've probably already made your decision about it but you're working yourself mad about making sure it's the right one.

Have a think about that and how your life could be made much simpler by being more decision in general. Good luck with being offered the house.

Ashkey234 · 19/07/2017 18:34

Just floorboards in this other house, covered in paint etc..so deffo need carpets as essential really
