To think there's someone in my house

Sat downstairs heard a strange noise sounded like an window or door suddenly banging or rattling, then a series of thuds. I convinced myself it was the neighbours as they are attached. Kept hearing rattling/banging so went to investigate.
Checked front door, locked. Checked kitchen. Back door unlocked so locked it.
Checked my bedroomas, no probs. Checked DS bedroom and his window is wide open with the safety catch off and he's snoring away.
Has someone broke in? Have they left out the back door? Are they hiding in my wardrobe?

I'd have to check again

I'd be scared to fall asleep

SaucyJack · 18/07/2017 23:50

Or a bird stuck in the chimney.

AtSea1979 · 18/07/2017 23:51

Thanks. There's no one I can tell in RL Sad but I'll stick some jokey thing on FB for colleagues to send help if I don't turn up for work. Kids still snoring. Looked in both their wardrobes, I know, weird but thought I'd best double check.

Don't let your imagination run away. It will have been the wind and the bumps would've been the window swinging in the wind once open. Nobody would climb up a floor and break in through an occupied bedroom while you were downstairs, especially if the back door was already open.. And you'd have seen something if they'd still been in your house while you checked the rooms. Plus now your imagination has kicked in you're hearing strange noises which are most likely there all the time but you don't notice unless you really listen.

LeonoraFlorence · 18/07/2017 23:52

Think I'd call police OP, just to be on safe side. Hope you're ok!

ConstanceCraving · 18/07/2017 23:53

Garden furniture blown over?

PickAChew · 18/07/2017 23:53

The noise might actually be the neighbours. When mine move around it sounds just the same as the kids moving around upstairs (mid terrace)

AtSea1979 · 18/07/2017 23:54

bang I did go check early around 11 when it happened. Then came upstairs to be nearer them and eventually got in my bed and been back out to them since. But even now I'm back in bed I feel sweaty and sick thinking someone is stood on landing. Irrational I know which is why I'm not ringing police or anything as the rational side is saying is the wind etc

I think you're going to look a bit mad calling the police- you've checked the house and there is no one there- what more would the police do?

It sounds spooky but you've checked the house and locked up, don't let MN freak you out.

Justaboy · 19/07/2017 00:00

Can you just have a look outside to see if there a ladder nearby or could anyone have got one around there?.

If not shut window and go back to sleep!

sillydrunkfool · 19/07/2017 00:04

Stand with your bedroom door open and LOUDLY (not actually phoning anyone) speak into your phone in a confident tone "police please. There is an intruder" if there is anyone they'll quickly run off even if it means you seeing them

It won't be a murderer if anyone it will be a petty thief but I'm sure it's NOBODY Smile

AtSea1979 · 19/07/2017 00:08

It's been an hour now. No one would have squashed themselves in to some random hiding space for that long. A burgular wouldn't climb up the house when it's still quite early and lights and tv on. A murderer would probably knock on the door then get me when I open it. So probably just this wind.

Get body spray hair spray or perfume beside you. Also find things like an umbrella or a hockey stick or some other nasty implement. When I feel like you are just now I go round the house looking everywhere poking under the bed in wardrobes etc. with a walking stick. I would rather be safe than sorry. You can get the cops round, they will do a house check for you if you are feeling scared especially with kids in the house.

MumIsRunningAMarathon · 19/07/2017 00:11

Any loft access?

A scary thought I appreciate. But something to consider as you are checking wardrobes!

That's my worst fear, it's the reason I have a gun in the bedroom when DH is away for work.

Acouple of weeks ago while DH was away I heard someone oout on the pateo, I went out with a rifle to confront them. It was a black bear licking the fat of the BBQ. It was one of the most scary moments of my recent life!

Justaboy · 19/07/2017 00:14

Kursk What happened to Bruin the bear get a warning shot over his head;?.

Llanali · 19/07/2017 00:27

I read that @Kursk and thought "you better not be in the U.K.".... then got to your last paragraph and thought "no, definitely not in the UK"

Hope you're ok OP. You've checked and locked up, try to get some rest if you can.

sodablackcurrant · 19/07/2017 00:28

Why would anyone leave a back door unlocked at that time of night or at any time.

Just wondered.

I could never do it, just for the record, naice area, but the robbers are not.

TheMaddHugger · 19/07/2017 00:31

here's a ((((((((Big Hug)))))))))))

myrtleWilson · 19/07/2017 00:34

Sorry OP but I do hope @Kursk now reveals they live in Bath! I hope your anxiety levels decrease - I would be the same with worry but am sure all is ok

Autofillcontact · 19/07/2017 00:36

I forget to lock my back door all the time. Humans can be less than perfect shocker

Theycalledmethewildrose · 19/07/2017 00:36

Give the local police a call if you can't ring anyone.

I don't want to alarm you but this happened to me in a previous house. I returned to the house to find it had been burgled. Eventually rang the police who told me to leave the house asap as they were likely to still be in the house or if I had disturbed them, they would return later.

LondonLassInTheCountry · 19/07/2017 00:43

I would of atleast bundled the kids into my bed and then prob put a chest of draws behind the door ...

F $$k that s $$t
