To think there's someone in my house

Sat downstairs heard a strange noise sounded like an window or door suddenly banging or rattling, then a series of thuds. I convinced myself it was the neighbours as they are attached. Kept hearing rattling/banging so went to investigate.
Checked front door, locked. Checked kitchen. Back door unlocked so locked it.
Checked my bedroomas, no probs. Checked DS bedroom and his window is wide open with the safety catch off and he's snoring away.
Has someone broke in? Have they left out the back door? Are they hiding in my wardrobe?

When you say thuds could someone actually have got in and still be in the house? If this is remotely possible and the neighbours house is joined on get the dc/dcs in there now and get the neighbours to check with you or ring the police. Better to look daft if it's the cat than be a genuine case

Nothing in the garden to move. Besides I can hear the wind so that's the most obvious thing. But can't relax at all now.
No I wouldn't hear the stairs, DC often sneak down and scare the life out of me. They don't creak at all and thick carpets.

Anyone you can ask to come over and keep you company tonight?.

Storminateapot · 18/07/2017 23:20

My bedroom window, if not properly latched, will thud backwards & forwards as wind gets up then swing out with a clatter on a strong gust. It sounds quite alarming from downstairs.

However, if you do think someone is in the house get yourself & the kids out.

MrsOverTheRoad · 18/07/2017 23:22

I had this the other night OP. We live in a bungalow and DH and I were in bed...one DC was next to us and the other on a sleepover. Dog in garden...we heard bumps and thuds coming from the kitchen/dining room.

It was loud enough that we both looked at one another with wide eyes...then DH checked. Nothing.

Nothing was moved and doors were shut. It was too loud to be an animal. It sounded like a drunk man stumbling about!

ClopySow · 18/07/2017 23:22

Fucking hell. I'm scared now.

Foxysoxy01 · 18/07/2017 23:23

Can you get the kids quietly out? If so I suggest you do that now just to be on the safe side.

If not you need the call the police now obviously quietly just in case.

AtSea1979 · 18/07/2017 23:25

Don't really know the neighbours as only been here a month or so now and it's late.
Surely no one would go to trouble of climbing through an upstairs window when lights are on and hang around? I've checked in every room. No other signs.
There's a slight random squeaking noise that I can't put my finger on. You know when you lie in bed and hear familiar noises that you know is the radiator cooling or the fridge or loose window. But as it's quite new I'm still getting used to noises and can't think what this squeak could be. Maybe the neighbours having sex. Or the gate in the garden.

Sorry I'm waffling shit with nerves. Lay in bed sweating even though the rational side is telling myself why would anyone climb in to a house. Think I might go and wake DS and see if he got up and opened his bedroom window.

MrsChopper · 18/07/2017 23:29

Ring the police for advice. Better sace than sorry!

AtSea1979 · 18/07/2017 23:29

I'm pretty sure storm is right. As it's new it's just never happened.
If someone was inside, what would they be doing right now and why? Makes no sense.

OP posts:
MrsChopper · 18/07/2017 23:29

Save even Blush

AtSea1979 · 18/07/2017 23:31

I can't even bring myself to go and check again. I have visions of opening the bedroom door and 'him' sexist being stood right there. Yet the kids are out there so that's awful.

Text someone to come over. Please.

Headofthehive55 · 18/07/2017 23:34

Message someone to come over in RL.
You won't know all the house sounds yet.
How would anyone get to an upstairs window. You'd need a ladder.

GlitteryFluff · 18/07/2017 23:37

Agree with posters saying to call or text someone you know to tell them. Then they can come over or at least send for help if you're not contactable in the morning Shock
I'm sure it's nothing but still!

Foxysoxy01 · 18/07/2017 23:38

I would imagine the only reason someone would climb up and through a window would be to steal from you.

Murderers don't tend to climb through an upstairs window of a random persons house on an off chance there might be someone worth murdering!

I imagine if someone had been in they either got out through the back after making a shit ton of noise or climed back through window after making a shot ton of noise.

I don't think you should panic, take a deep breath. I'm absolutely sure you are safe and nothing at all is wrong.

Now go pick up the kids and knock on the neighbours door or go outside and phone the police/burly friend to get them to look round with you just to be on the safe side.

ConstanceCraving · 18/07/2017 23:39

Back door was open but wind blew it shut?

PointlessUsername · 18/07/2017 23:41

Bring the dc in bed with you and block the bedroom door?

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 18/07/2017 23:42

I would also bring the dc in bed with me and block the door...

AppalachianWalzing · 18/07/2017 23:45

A few weeks ago I woke up because of a noise downstairs, was sure it was inside the house, woke DH up but he reckoned it was next door. Because they've just moved in thought it was different noises from them, but something felt a bit off- house 'settling' in an unfamiliar way. After ten minutes heard footsteps at the bottom of the stairs: got DH up, called police, guy scarpered out the front door and we discovered our ransacked downstairs.

I don't mean to scare you but I knew that first noise was in our house. I just didn't trust myself. Ring 101, or a person you know, or barricade yourself in your child's room till morning. However, if nothing has been taken and some time has passed, its fairly unlikely someone is waiting till you go to bed to rob you. Much more likely to be the wind. But with an open door and window you would not be paranoid to get someone else around to check it out.

PyongyangKipperbang · 18/07/2017 23:46

Go and sleep in the kids room or have them in with you.

I am afraid that I am struggling for sympathy when you say that you are too scared to look but your kids are "out there" without you.

I used to have nights like this when I was a LP. It was horrible but for the safety of the kids, I would have to steel myself to check the house out.

SaucyJack · 18/07/2017 23:49

It's probably just something like an empty plant pot blown into the side of your house and bouncing down the wall.

Sympathies tho. I hate those late panics.
