Hi ... summer holidays looming .... a great time to hang out with 15 yo DD while away... We love games like Articulate, Racing Demon, Bananagrams, Forbidden Island, Charades... even Settlers of Katan.... and quite enjoy Sussed...

AIBU to ask for some great recommendations for having a good time with a teen during the summer hols? What are your favourite games and why?

If you like Settlers of Catan, try 7 Wonders (and its myriad expansions), Puerto Rico, Citadels, or if there are only the two of you, Lost Cities. There is also a two player Catan game (Rivals of Catan) and two player Blokus. If you want compact games to travel with, Rivals/Citadels/Lost Cities are all smallish, plus Love Letters and Mille Bornes. Or teach her chess! There are way too few girls in competitive chess and consequently lots of opportunities, plus lots of transferable benefits she can draw on at exam time, if that isn't too worthy.

Theres a brilliant game called Stuff and Nonsense, released by Professor Elemental. The idea is to gather some random items from different markets to fabricate a tall tale of some adventure you totally went on while trying not to get caught fibbing by the professor. The real fun comes with the stories you make up, you can make them as outlandish and weird as possible. Everyone I've played with has loved this game.

Oh my god I'm such a failure! My teen won't even speak to me never mind play a family board game Blush

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 19/07/2017 14:13

Really nasty horseracing game. (Last played two nights ago with 13yo, 2 young adults 19/20 and 3 grown ups.

Or any number of card games - catch the queen is hugely entertaining for 3, 4 or 5 players.

MrsFionaCharming · 19/07/2017 14:18

We got Sushi Go recently, which is great. A game only takes 5-10 minutes, but it's really addictive so you can easily play lots of games in a row. It also packs up small into its own tin, so good for taking on trains / camping in the rain.

lalalalyra · 19/07/2017 14:19

SmartAss and the Logo game are two favourites here.

loveyouradvice · 19/07/2017 22:27

Oh wow!!! These all sound amazing... intrigued by Exploding Kittens which I'd never heard of but lots of you are keen on! Great name

Cards Against Humanity Blush

GloriaV · 19/07/2017 22:39

Pit is an old game - supposedly dealing on the stock exchange but more a very noisy, very fast card game. Cheap too I would think as it's just a set of cards.

HicDraconis · 19/07/2017 22:46

Exploding kittens is a card game based on Russian roulette. You all take it in turns to draw cards from a deck - if you draw an exploding kitten you are dead and out of the game unless you have a defuse card (laser pointer, catnip sandwiches, kitten yoga...). You then put the exploding kitten card back in the deck wherever you want to (you can't look at the other cards but you can count them and slide the kitten in to land on a particular player). The other cards are designed to help you avoid picking up a kitten (shuffle, skip, attack) or to allow you to take cards from other players, or allow you to pick up from the discard pile. It is surprisingly fun and entertaining for a simple premise. My boys still love the shuffle card with going poo in the litter box of a 1000 possibilities. Which will break the known universe (and also, will probably smell like poo).

SistersOfPercy · 19/07/2017 22:46

Exploding kittens is amazing. Tears of laughter have been shed over that game and the 'Pope of nope' is in the family vocabulary.

Fluxx is very good as well. EWe have the monty python version as the kids are fans but there are a few different versions. Especially funny when you get bonus points for talking in a fake foreign accent.

Cards against humanity as well but mine are adult age.

SistersOfPercy · 19/07/2017 22:48

Just to add there are two versions of exploding kittens, regular and explicit. We have the explicit version but be sure to get the right one for your age group if you order.

PandoraMole · 19/07/2017 23:07

Balderdash - first experience of playing it with DBIL & SIL, DD(12), DNeph (14) and DNiece and her BF (both 17).

Probably the most I've ever laughed in one evening Grin

seesensepeople · 19/07/2017 23:25

Another vote for Exploding Kittens. Also Cards Against Humanity if you can bear the idea that being offensive is the winning formula. Mine also enjoy Scrabble, Boggle and Yahtzee. Surprisingly Cluedo and Monopoly if you get the right character versions (i.e. Simpsons, Avengers, Sherlock - whichever suits their tastes). A basic pack of 52 cards is also really useful - download the rules of some games...

BarbarianMum · 19/07/2017 23:27

We like Catan, Risk and Poker.

HoneyWheeler · 19/07/2017 23:38

Heads up - game on an iPhone! Hours of fun!

Lotsofplans · 20/07/2017 00:11

We play Settlers, 7 Wonders, Escape the Curse of the Temple, (fun because you all work together to escape!) Incan Gold, Ultimate Werewolf, Luck of the Draw, Dungeons and Dragons (but you need someone to prepare and lead it), Card games - Phase 10, President, Poker, Spoons (can get violent!), Irish Snap (ditto!)

OvariesForgotHerPassword · 20/07/2017 00:14

Cards Against Humanity every time Grin

SpecialDelivery22 · 20/07/2017 00:28
