AIBU to call in sick for this?

I don't know what to do so hoping someone has some advice.

My periods have always been regular as clockwork, moderately painful and last 5-6 days. However, my last period which finished a week ago, was 11 days long, much heavier and more painful than normal. I felt very weak and exhausted by the end.

Last night I started bleeding again. It's very heavy and I'm passing a lot of clots. I feel nauseous and have cramps but I don't think it can be my period because of the timing. WIBU to call in sick to work and try to get a doctor's appointment as I'm anxious something could be really wrong with me?

Also if I do call in, how much detail do I have to give? My boss is a man in his 60's and very 'old school'.

I'd call in sick and seek medical advice.

welshweasel · 17/07/2017 07:10

I agree you should see a doctor at some point as all unusual bleeding needs investigating but is the bleeding actually hampering your ability to work due to the amount of blood or associated pain? Would you go to work if this was your normal period?

Winterview · 17/07/2017 07:13

Call in sick and see a doctor asap.

You don't need to go into detail with your boss, say it's gynae related and don't give any more details unless you want to.

yorkshapudding · 17/07/2017 07:13

welsh I've never taken time off work a normal period, but then I've never had a period this heavy or accompanying nausea like this before. I think I could get through the day but will struggle as my job is very full on.

BikeRunSki · 17/07/2017 07:21

But this isn't a normal period.

Sunnyjac · 17/07/2017 07:30

That clearly isn't your period, get down to the docs

Notevilstepmother · 17/07/2017 07:33

Call in sick, if it's an answer machine don't leave details, if it's a person just say it's a gynaecological problem, you don't need to give details.

Try to get a doctors appointment, or if not then at least a doctor to phone you.

Onelastpage · 17/07/2017 07:36

Take the time - if it were me, the cramps (even if mild) combined with anxiety would mean I'd be useless at work anyway.

But seriously get medical advice.

grumpysquash3 · 17/07/2017 07:37

Agree with pp, call in, say you have an urgent medical problem, that you're seeing a GP asap and that you'll be back in contact later.
If the GP tells you to take time off (which he/she probably will) you can call back and tell them when to expect you.

Definitely don't tell your boss the details - it's probably TMI in general, for an 'old school' he'll pass out with horror!

Rumtopf · 17/07/2017 07:53

Definitely get to the Dr's, anything unusual needs to be checked out. With regard to work, call in sick with "women's problems" if he's old school that will be sufficient, tell them you'll update them after your appt.

MrsDoylesTeabags · 17/07/2017 08:12

Definately get medical advice, if this is not normal for you then you need to get it checked out.
If you don't want to tell your boss is your period then maybe tell him you've been up all night with stomach pains and have been sick?
But please get it checked out. Good luck

emmyrose2000 · 17/07/2017 08:20

Could it be a miscarriage? In any event you need to see a doctor asap. This doesn't sound normal, for you anyway.

yorkshapudding · 17/07/2017 08:26

Thank you all. Have called in, got a voicemail so left a vague message. Will try to get an urgent appointment with my GP. They are a nightmare, usually have to wait at least 2 weeks to see someone but will see what they say.

yorkshapudding · 17/07/2017 08:28

emmy I did wonder about that. Would the bleeding go on for 11 days, stop for a week then start again though? I did pass some quite large clots during my period (or what I assumed was my period) so I don't know.

Fairylea · 17/07/2017 08:29

If you can't get an appointment with your gp today I would ring 111 for advice.

flumpybear · 17/07/2017 08:31

Doesn't sound right at all. Could you be pregnant or having a miscarriage?

Bobbybobbins · 17/07/2017 08:33

Yes ring 111 if GP are unable to get you in

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 17/07/2017 08:33

I had a period at the expected time, then another bleed a week later. It was an ectopic pregnancy.
Please seek medical advice.

IHateUncleJamie · 17/07/2017 08:35

If you can't see a GP today, definitely phone 111. You need someone to check you over. 💐

UpsidedownEighteen · 17/07/2017 08:42

Heavy and unusual bleeding like this can be very dangerous and is a sign of sepsis.

Don't fuck about with waiting to see the GP or calling 111. Get seen asap. Whether it's a walk in clinic or A&E.

blackteasplease · 17/07/2017 08:44

I would also go to doctors.

StarryCorpulentCunt · 17/07/2017 08:44

For me that would be fairly normal. I'm always heavy, unpredictable and ill with my periods. However if it is unusual for you then you need to seek medical advice. It does sound a little like a miscarriage.

KitKat1985 · 17/07/2017 08:51

Well done for calling. I'd second calling 111 for advice. I'm not trying to scare you but it could be serious so waiting several days for a GP appointment wouldn't be acceptable.

happydays00 · 17/07/2017 09:02

Also saying call 111 if you are passing large clots. Start to (if not already) take note how many sanitary towels you are going through - i.e. 1 an hour is serious cause for concern. Hope all turns out ok OP

supersop60 · 17/07/2017 09:03

Our doctors always keep a couple of slots free for emergencies. Call again and stress how bad and unusual for you the bleeding is.
