11 year old ds showers every evening and
uses Keep it Kind deodorant spray every morning. He always comes home from school smelling.
He showered this morning (sanex) clean clothes and then tonight smelling again! So had another shower. Is this normal? Aibu to be concerned? He takes melatonin for sleep

Is it an antiperspirant or just a deodorant? Deodorants only mask smells and don't stop then sweating.

dementedpixie · 16/07/2017 19:54

Just deodorant may not be enough for him. He might need an antiperspirant/deodorant. Also, if he's sweating at night, a quick shower in the morning could be necessary.

MrsGotobed · 16/07/2017 19:56

Could it be the sweat smell sticking to his clothes even after being laundered?

Try a squirt of white vinegar on the armpits of schools shirts before washing them and see if that helps

dementedpixie · 16/07/2017 19:56

As I thought it's just a deodorant. Try an antiperspirant instead

scrabble1 · 16/07/2017 19:58

Bought it as was worried about additives but now seriously considering an ordinary one like Dove original or Nivea

My son had it really bad even with morning and night showers. There are some heavy duty antiperspirants. He used one called triple dry that is most effective used at night, something to do with hormones. It worked and now out of puberty does not need.

scrabble1 · 16/07/2017 19:59

Is it OK to use a standard antiperspirant on kids?

OP posts:
YellowLawn · 16/07/2017 20:02

dc uses a nivea sensitive roll on. it doesn't smell at all.
imo it's important to put it on directly after washing.
also washing clothes at a higher temp (at least 40) with bio detergent helps.

dementedpixie · 16/07/2017 20:03

Yes it's been fine for both of mine. Ds is 10 and uses a standard antiperspirant and so has dd for years. For a 'chemical free' deodorant that your ds is using they seem to have a list of weird and wonderful ingredients. Nothing is chemical free!

scrabble1 · 16/07/2017 20:04

Thanks everyone. Off to buy a spray one tomorrow. Dove or Sanex

Namechangetempissue · 16/07/2017 20:05

My DD (11) uses standard antiperspirant (Sanex). Agree with the comments from dementedpixie re. "chemical free" deodorant.

AfunaMbatata · 16/07/2017 20:07

Mitchum 48 hours antiperspirant is really very good.

Is the aluminium safe?

LondonLassInTheCountry · 16/07/2017 20:11

After he gets out of bed, make sure he uses it.

He may need to wash in yhe morning as well, maybe he sweats lots at night

Roomba · 16/07/2017 20:21

There have been loads of studies on the aluminium that have failed to find any problems.

DS1 is 11 and is exactly the same, if it's any consolation. And worse, he refuses to accept he needs to shower daily and use antiperspirant, so I seem to spend half my life nagging him to wash himself! I'm amazed he doesn't have a massive complex by now, I remember being mortified when my mum just once said I was a bit whiffy after sports day and needed a shower. Not DS1!

I get him to use standard mens antiperspirant, tried all the 'chemical free' Hmm and crystal stuff and it was useless. I also wash his shirts and tshirts with Dettol laundry cleanser which has really helped get the stink off his clothes and bedding (he sweats a lot at night seemingly).

Violetcharlotte · 16/07/2017 20:23

He needs a good anti perspirant!

I buy Sure for men for my teen DS which seems to do the job.

Supersoaryflappypigeon · 16/07/2017 20:25

What temp do You wash clothes at? I have to do DH shirts at 60 to get them stink-free

PsychoPumpkin · 16/07/2017 20:30

Sure maximum protection is good!

scrabble1 · 16/07/2017 20:35

Clothes washed at 40 with Aeriel Bio. They always smell nice, it's just his armpitsBlush

OP posts:
Penfold007 · 16/07/2017 20:45

Scrabble if you iron his shirts have a smell of the armpit area as soon as you've run the iron over the area. You might be shocked at how much 'smell' is trapped. White vinegar or Dettol laundry additive plus a hot wash might be needed alongside the Ariel Bio.

scrabble1 · 16/07/2017 20:48

Good advice thanks. Previous only used the Dettol laundry cleanser for sickness bugs. Will try it on his tops. New secondary school jumper is acrylic so that will definitely be whiffy!

OP posts:
Supersoaryflappypigeon · 16/07/2017 20:57

Really scrub the pits of his tops with concentrated detergent before you put them in the wash.

Poshsausage · 16/07/2017 21:00

The crystal black spray is very good for anti smell
