11 year old ds showers every evening and
uses Keep it Kind deodorant spray every morning. He always comes home from school smelling.
He showered this morning (sanex) clean clothes and then tonight smelling again! So had another shower. Is this normal? Aibu to be concerned? He takes melatonin for sleep

Urgh - lynx hate it, gets into your nose, not good for anyone with asthma.

Mitchum 48 hr unperfumed recommended also, take the point about roll on so use the spray, they have brought out new sprays, which I think are better. Think DS probably needs a shower morning and evening in the summer at least, use cotton wash cloth Try using all cotton bedding, you can get cotton duvets and pillows.

The tip for white vinegar is well worth a try, it has many uses from cleaning glassware, using with bicarb of soda to clean plugholes etc.

Lynx is loved by early teenage boys and no other bugger.

DS took a massive shine to Vichy 48 hour treatment which is a bit pricey but smells lovely and does the job.

Something like a Mitchum spray might work and some basic rules like applying it only if dry.

DS17 uses Dove Clean Comfort, it smells lovely. He used to use the strong Mitchum one when he first started puberty and I have never noticed him stinking. He is of the three showers a day variety though, which is an irritant in a different way as we only have one bathroom where the toilet is...

Get him a stick antiperspirant as a spray will stink your house out and a roll on is sticky.

Ohhh I am with you on the Lynx hatred, @SomethingOnce. When liberally applied by a teenage boy or two (or three - lucky me), the smell is so strong you can taste it, three rooms away, though closed doors!

It is basically weaponised fragrance.

I used to do exam invigilation in an all-boys school, and in hot weather the air in there was 50:50 Lynx:BO. You could have sliced it.

Good point about the spray, Mini. I don't use aerosol myself for exactly the reasons you describe. The Body Shop one I mentioned is the squirty type, not an aerosol can (they have it in other formats too), but as you say probably gets into dust more than a roll on or solid block.

I would second the recommendation of Mitchum 48 hour roll on. You can get an unperfumed one, so he could use a deodorant fragrance of his choice too - in my experience teenage boys use a lot of Lynx!

If you are worried about chemicals don't use a spray, use a roll on or gel. Spray dissipates into the air and you breathe it in and also accumulates into the dust in your house (which forms the worst source of indoor pollution - dust that is not deodorant!!!).

I am generally chemical "free" (as much as you can be!) and make my own cleaning products, buy non-toxic toiletries and make up, don't use air fresheners and am slowly trying to rid our house of fire retardant chemicals which are ineffective and horribly toxic. HOWEVER, I have not been able to find an effective non-toxic deodorant! So I use a Dove one.

Like someone else has written above, my understanding is that current evidence re aluminium indicates that aluminium is probably not toxic.

It's the soup of other chemicals you are exposed to you probably want to worry about.

Body Shop Maca Root spray deo works really well on DH who cycles a lot. Sold out last time I looked as it's a popular product.

The synthetic cycling clothes are not pleasant but the spray is effective on the body, somewhat surprisingly, as it's not antiperspirant and has no aluminium iirc.

Boys this age are notorious for smelly bedrooms, my DS seems to sweat very badly whilst he is asleep, bedroom is very pongy!
Keep up the washing routine, clean clothes, anti perspirant, air his bedroom out and clean bedding regularly.
Yes to making sure he uses lots of soap for a 'proper wash' too.

I supervise showers due to silly behaviour with adhd. Stand outside and check he carries out step by step instructions. He wears cotton polo tops for school

tonight he was whiffy after school so had a shower. Went to his room half hour after he fell asleep to check on him and the smell hit me when walked into his room. Poor lad

If you want a child friendly deodorant try one of the Lush ones. Aromaco is a solid bar, like a stick deodorant but in bar form. It's all natural ingredients and ~100g lasts me 4-6 months so it's cost effective. One of the only deodorants that works for me to stop sweat without aggregating my sensitive skin.

TRUST off amazon is brilliant, just put a tiny amount on (tub lasts about a year) and it stops the smell for about 7 days (lasts through showers) you can put your normal smellies on top

Agree with the above comment about wearing 100% cotton. I can absolutely an hour after a shower whenever I wear anything synthetic and no smell whatsoever when wearing cotton.

What fabric is he wearing? I recently had to replace all DD8 summer dresses for 100% cotton after she was coming home every day smelling really strong, despite shower every morning and using adult antiperspirant. It completely did the trick!

I would go for a roll on if I were you... A spray won't last long!
