It's BOUGHT not BROUGHT!!!

I've only just started noticing this, and I'm not British so don't know how long it's been happening, but I keep seeing people on mn using 'brought' instead of 'bought'! It's drinking me crazy as it makes absolutely no sense at all, and I just can't understand how the hell anyone could think that it's correct. Aaaargh! If you paid fucking money for it in the shop then you fucking BOUGHT it. If you took it from one place you another with you then you BROUGHT it. Driving. Me. Crazy.

Here comes the "language evolves" argument now, as predicted

This is just an excuse by people too lazy or dense to know the difference between bought and brought or loose and lose, and they cover up with their "evolving language" nonsense. It's not evolving to cover your mistakes, they are still wrong!

OuchLegoHurts · 15/07/2017 14:58

hippy it may well have been only a week but that has nothing to do with me. I happen to find this one particular error very annoying, whether or not you agree. You really don't have to click on threads that you're not interested in, or bored by!

So glad someone's also mentioned draw/drawer. It's just plain ignorant.

I don't understand how someone can buy a chest of drawers from an online retailer, having selected the section entitled chest of drawers, to then leave a review banging on about how awful the draws are.

I think that we are more exposed to these errors in this online world. I actually think they were already there but we were not exposed to them, couldn't see these errors written down. I agree with people not reading properly edited and proofread material.

Chester Draws, anyone?

MimsyFluff · 15/07/2017 15:05

I'm dyslexic I hate making mistakes it's so irritating when you want to say type "evolution" and can't write the bloody word and then having them pointed out! Also reading something but reading it completely different! Example it says "how are you?" And I read it as "I'm a dinosaur"!

I have a good volcathery I can't spell that word so the only way I can type is by writing "I have good range of words" now which sounds better? The only person I allow to point out my mistakes is my sister, she edits all my important emails and sometimes I have to send her stuff asking if I've read it right!

If you met me in real life you'd think I was intelligent but reading my words I read like a moron or is that insulting? Well you should hear the comments I have received for spelling mistakes "how can you not spell ___!" Or friends saying "your not that dyslexic!" Till I tell them to check whatsapp and then they see all the mistakes because unlike here I don't have to think about EVERY spelling.

It's very embarrassing that my eight year old can write better than me and that I can't help her with her reading or writing! She's in top sets I'm very proud of her also it's hireditry (sic) so DD2 (7) is averaging at school so I've been told by her teacher "she's probably dyslexic" because she's not as academic as DD1 Hmm

It's taken me 19 minutes to write this because I've had to think about the spelling and reread to make sure it makes sense to others.

MimsyFluff · 15/07/2017 15:07

I was 24 when it finally clicked in my head the meaning where, were and we're but still have to over think it

SunsetBeetch · 15/07/2017 15:15

CHESTER drawers Wink

MikeUniformMike · 15/07/2017 15:16

Mimsy, dyslexic people often are very talented or intelligent. Please don't be embarrassed.

fluffiphlox · 15/07/2017 15:21

Most of my friends can spell. It's a real eye-opener when you use sites like this or stumble across something on Facebook where the spelling is AWFUL. What the hell were all these people doing when they were in school? Oh and criterion/criteria and phenomenon/phenomena.
Use a blinking dictionary.

MikeUniformMike · 15/07/2017 15:21

Chester draws are well known. You can get them online on auction and free sites, You might even find them in shops but they'll be listed as "Chester Draw's". They are occasionally referred to as Chester Doors. The aforementioned online sites are good for finding dinning tables and dinning chairs too.

Is it just me who hates below used instead of following; e.g. "Select from the below list". It makes me squirm.

Medeci · 15/07/2017 15:22

I've been literally driven mad by the way literally is used on here.

It's BOUGHT not BROUGHT!!!
DixieFlatline · 15/07/2017 15:35

"Should of" instead of "should have"

That is not evolution is killing the language

To be fair, it's fairly easy to see that that is a straightforward example of language change. People say 'should've', in many accents this becomes indistinguishable from 'should of', and so you eventually get people learning to spell it 'should of'.

It's still very annoying and unlikely to have happened if everyone just bloody read a bare minimum of a few novels while a child/teen, but not every child is raised in an environment that encourages them to read. Maybe schools should be funded better so they could have more of an impact.

Starsandwishes · 15/07/2017 15:37

MimsyFluff I feel similar. I often spell how things sound so to me draw would be right. It's not because I'm lazy it's because that's what I hear. There's nothing to gain by being lazy.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 15/07/2017 15:45

Not sure this has to do with evolution of language.

It's most likely caused by slipping education standards, militant ignorance and carelessness, though some of that is also caused by dyslexia in which case it's fair enough.

Goodnamesalltaken · 15/07/2017 15:48

The one that really gets me is apart instead of a part.Hmm

iamdivergent · 15/07/2017 15:49

It's drawers not draws

Someone I know corrected me on this! I was Confused she is otherwise very smart - although she also says are instead of our Hmm

Takenforanob · 15/07/2017 15:50

Can you borrow me a pen Miss?

It's 'lend'.

What??

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 15/07/2017 15:50

Surely those are two different words, Goodnames?

toosexyforyahshirt · 15/07/2017 15:53

What do you mean, "what?" Some people say borrow when they mean lend.

Mrsm49 · 15/07/2017 15:53

Defiantly instead of definitely anyone?

IHaveBrilloHair · 15/07/2017 15:53

The bought/brought thing made me laugh the other day, someone talking about holidaying in an expensive place, but it was ok because their friends had brought a villa a few years ago. Grin

SandyDenny · 15/07/2017 15:56

apart and a part are two different things, I think goodnames is pointing out that people use them wrongly.

To my shame I have a dc who types abit in messages, gets me every time

BeyondThePage · 15/07/2017 15:58

I make mistakes sometimes - it is social media FFS, I'm not going to bother proofreading everything before posting, people who judge or do the clever-clogs pointing it out thing are just rude.

In my job, mistakes in reports are as rare as rocking horse poop - because there it ACTUALLY matters.

toosexyforyahshirt · 15/07/2017 15:59

It's not about the odd mistake though, it's about persistent errors and the overall avalanche of people who no longer care about even being understood properly.
