I've only just started noticing this, and I'm not British so don't know how long it's been happening, but I keep seeing people on mn using 'brought' instead of 'bought'! It's drinking me crazy as it makes absolutely no sense at all, and I just can't understand how the hell anyone could think that it's correct. Aaaargh! If you paid fucking money for it in the shop then you fucking BOUGHT it. If you took it from one place you another with you then you BROUGHT it. Driving. Me. Crazy.

In that case it's nothing to do with dyslexia

Agree, most of the time it's just ignorance/laziness. If you actually think about the words you're saying, what they mean and where they come from, there should be no problem finding the correct word.

indigox · 15/07/2017 13:55

I don't understand how people don't know the difference. Confused

BendydickCuminsnatch · 15/07/2017 13:55

However hands up, I do not know the difference between discrete and discreet! Luckily I rarely use those words.

Absolutely EVERYTHING mentioned on this thread so far makes me cringe

DioneTheDiabolist · 15/07/2017 13:59

Thanks for the post Ceto. Thanks DS (10) said he found it very helpful. Every time I see "que" in a post, I wonder if Manuel from Fawley Towers is a Mnetter.

notangelinajolie · 15/07/2017 13:59

Guilty. I do it on purpose though. Guess it's my Northern sense of humour and a childhood watching telly programmes like 'Not on your Nelly'.

YANBU. I have a friend who does this and it makes me wince every time she says/writes 'I've just brought a new dress' or whatever. Nyyyyyaaaaargh!!

LucieLucie · 15/07/2017 14:01

YANBU - it has absolutely nothing to do with Dyslexia and everything to do with poor grammar.

Same goes for all the special people selling their 'Draws' on Gumtree Confused

FreakinDeacon · 15/07/2017 14:03

I am going to go against the trend of this thread as I did on a similar one in the week.

You all sound horribly superior. Some people struggle with words, written or spoken. The English language is complex and has a lot of conflicting 'rules'.

If you know what the person means, why the fuck does it matter.

Language continually evolves.
Some of the words my grandparents used never get used now. Some of the language used now would be alien to them.

Well done all of you for be so terribly clever though.

Topseyt · 15/07/2017 14:06

Obviously it makes me cringe so much that I hit send too soon as well.

When made persistently, these errors do show a lack of perception and awareness on the part of those making them.

SandyDenny · 15/07/2017 14:06

How can a native English speaker not know the difference? It's nothing to do with being dyslesxic.

I hate take and bring being used the wrong way round, it seems to also be coming more and more prevalent

These are not in the same category as discreet/discrete which really aren't everyday words for most people I'd guess

Topseyt · 15/07/2017 14:12

Here comes the "language evolves" argument now, as predicted.

Yes, it does. However, poor grammar is still poor grammar and "brought" does not suddenly mean the same as "bought", "loose" does not suddenly mean "lose" etc.

Wheelycote · 15/07/2017 14:12

How is anyone confusing bought and brought? Is it an accent thing maybe....I'm in Yorkshire but not from Yorkshire and there's a few words for things that make no sense to me and I'm sure people here feel same about some words I use.

Like teacake ...meaning bread bun!!! You wouldn't make a chip sarnie with a teacakeHmm

DioneTheDiabolist · 15/07/2017 14:15

DN and a couple of my friends are dyslexic. Such laziness and carelessness with language makes it more difficult for them to understand what is written. It causes those with English as a second language difficulty too.

Of course language evolves, but not because people just can't be arsed putting the "er" on the end of "draw".

MikeUniformMike · 15/07/2017 14:16

I hate the way that so many people claim to be dyslexic. Being crap at spelling and being dyslexic are not the same thing.

I know people who ask you to borrow something to them and they promise to fetch it back. I know people who always say brought for bring. I try to ignore it.

Llamallann · 15/07/2017 14:32

People who say 'draw' when they mean drawer. You did not get something out of a draw!!! Argggghhhh

Eolian · 15/07/2017 14:35

Commenting on someone's spelling or grammar uninvited is rude and unpleasant. Joining in discussion on a thread bemoaning the generally poor spelling and grammar standards is not. If you don't want to see comments about it, there's no need to open this kind of thread.

The error from the OP is an example of ignorance of the correct word, it's not really a dyslexia-type error. After all, people who write 'brought' instead of 'bought' usually seem to say it that way too. Digs about cleverness and superiority... well, yes, being articulate and understanding how your own language works are often signs of being more intelligent. Not always, but often. I personally don't think cleverness is ever a bad thing, whether it's shown through language skills, numeracy skills or other kinds of proficiency.

Yawn. Has it been a week already since the last thread?

3luckystars · 15/07/2017 14:45

I must admit I'm very stupid and often only realise my stupidity after reading something here.

Ceto · 15/07/2017 14:46

gloria and AlwaysPrepare, I have to admit that most of my post wasn't original - you can get T shirts and mugs with that lot on. But I did add one or two of my bugbears.
