To think it's not a big deal to sit in front of the TV with my tea most nights?!

Got into a debate with some colleagues at work today who ALL said it was all really 'chavvy' to eat your tea on your knee in front of the TV.
First of all - I hate the word 'chavvy'!
And second of all - I do this most nights and really don't see what the big deal is. My partner and I still find plenty of time to catch up with each other during the evenings such as when we're cooking or when we're in bed.
One of my particularly bitchy colleagues had the front to also say that couples who don't sit at the table together to eat are most likely the ones who are bored of each other and will eventually end up splitting up.
AIBU to think she's being ridiculous?

I do this if I'm on my own, but with DH we'll eat at a table and I'd feel uncomfortable otherwise. Not sure I'd judge anyone else's arrangements.

PinkHeart5911 · 14/07/2017 17:56

I don't think there is anything wrong with it as such, and each to there own and all that.

For me & dh we have always had dinner at the table and spoken about our day etc, we enjoy that part of the day.

With my dc I like them to sit at the table with no tv

goose1964 · 14/07/2017 17:59

Your colleague has strange ideas, we eat dinner on our laps most nights and have been together for 30 years

jennywasafriendofmrbrightside · 14/07/2017 18:02

If we are eating at the same time as DD's, then we all eat together at the table. If me and DH or just me are eating after the kids are in bed, it's on my knee in front of the TV with a beer.

Some people are too consumed with other people's lives Hmm

MrsRhubarb · 14/07/2017 18:02

We always did before DC. Now we sit at the table for a family meal. But I do rather miss how relaxing it was just watching something funny on TV while eating my tea.

user1498550798 · 14/07/2017 18:03

To buy into your colleagues' rigid ideas about class for a moment....anyone with class is so far from being thought 'chavvy' that it would never cross their mind to see their own behaviour in that light or to give the idea a second thought.

goingonabearhunt1 · 14/07/2017 18:04

We don't have a dining table and didn't use it when we did (except when having people over for food). There's no room in the flat and I don't see the point tbh.

If I had kids I'd eat at the table as this is what I did growing up and I can see the benefit but since we don't I don't think it matters. I'm sure my DPs/ILs are horrified by this but then they're horrified by all kinds of things I can't fathom.

What I find more annoying is when people have the TV on all the time and it's just rubbish that no-one is watching. I find the background noise annoying unless its one of my go-to programmes/films. But don't see a problem with sticking something you want to watch on while you eat and I like to be comfy so sofa it is!

goingonabearhunt1 · 14/07/2017 18:04

And I hate the word chavvy too FWIW. Horrible sneery term.

Ilovechocolatetoomuch · 14/07/2017 18:07

My most favourite time of the day! Sit down, feet up, telly on and relax. My hubby sits next to me if that counts

BackforGood · 14/07/2017 18:10

I find sitting slouched on a settee really uncomfortable. I'm much more likely to spill stuff and I find I don't digest it as well as sitting upright at a table, so personally I don't like eating other than at a table.
I also like to talk and listen to the family at meal times - it's a sort of 'touching base' time and all phones are away, all TV and radio turned off. I would really miss that meal time each day if I didn't have it.

However
What my colleagues do or don't do is none of my business. They were rude to judge you because of where / how you eat your dinner.

MagicMoneyTree · 14/07/2017 18:10

Toddler DS has his tea in his high chair next to the table.

Me and DH have ours on our knee in front of the TV.

DH not home early enough for us to all eat together. Only 30 mins between him getting home and DS bedtime. We eat together at the table at weekends. I don't give a shit what anyone else thinks. We're happy.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 14/07/2017 18:10

I had a gastric band inserted a few years ago and it failed, basically which means I find it very difficult to eat upright at a table. Sometimes hard to eat at all. I cant go out to eat with friends as I am scared I won't be able to digest food and in some ways it must be psychological because with my feet up on the settee normally I am okay. I do have a 5yo and know it doesn't look good :(

witsender · 14/07/2017 18:13

We do both, which is pretty normal in my opinion. I would say 80% of meals at the table, and 20% in living room. Kids love eating in living room for a change and it is a good switch off for me/us as we can pick something to watch and chill out!

wrenika · 14/07/2017 18:19

We ate off our laps for years cause we couldn't afford/didn't have room for a dining table.
It was one of my first purchases when I graduated and got a real job, and we use it most nights, but equally, I'm not averse to a meal on my knee!

TheSeaTheSkyTheSeaTheSkyyyyyy · 14/07/2017 18:20

I eat organic hummus with carrot sticks and baguette while I watch TV.

Am I a chav, or am I middle class? 🤔

Purplemac · 14/07/2017 18:23

DH and I both work looooong days. Whoever gets in from work first puts dinner on ready for when the other gets home, and we eat on the sofa (he will use the coffee table, I'll use the arm of the sofa!) Infront of the telly. Because we are fucking tired and need some downtime before we actually converse Wink

ephemeralfairy · 14/07/2017 18:25

DP is away at the moment and I've been eating in front of the TV for the last couple of weeks as I have been glued to Wimbledon. It's usually about 50/50, the kitchen (where the table is) is bloody cold in winter so we eat in the living room more. Other than that it depends if there's something on telly we specially want to watch, other than that we eat at the table.

And yes chavvy is a horrible, judgemental bigoted word.

ConstanceCraving · 14/07/2017 18:27

I love nothing more than eating my dinner in front of the TV. Hardly get to do it because of the dc but when they're out or in bed I do it.

user1498550798 · 14/07/2017 18:34

Tell her not to worry that you always eat on the sofa because at least 50% of the time you eat tea while watching tv in bed.

user1498550798 · 14/07/2017 18:34

I once ate breakfast in the bath.

wrinkleseverywhere · 14/07/2017 18:46

In our house we have a dining table which seats 8 (but could extend to sit 12) & a table in the kitchen which sits 4 but DH and I still eat in front of the TV most nights.
One of us gets home from work at 6, the other about 7 and both of us tend to be busy with the kids until about 7.30. Then we have a chat and I go for a run or tidy up whilst DH has a 10min nap and then cooks. It's lovely to crash on the sofa with supper at 9pm & watch something. DH still says the best present I ever got him was one of those laptrays with a beanbag type base to improve the eating in front of TV experience.

topcat2014 · 14/07/2017 18:51

I always eat at the table, as I am nervous about spilling when eating on the sofas..

But I get that's just me.

BlatheringOn · 14/07/2017 18:53

Breakfast in the bath! Multitasking queen.

Sushi123 · 14/07/2017 18:55

If you have children it's nice to sit at the table and eat together without tv on. If there are no kids about do whatever suits, sofa is grand

ParadiseCity · 14/07/2017 19:00

I don't really like eating meals on the sofa, makes me feel bloated. 99% of meals we eat at the table. I am pretty sure I read if you eat at a table you are less likely to overeat and when we talked about this in our office there was a definite split between the overweight people and the healthy weight people of sofa or table eating.
