To think we need an MN version of Godwin's Lawrence?

Godwin's Law: If an online discussion goes on long enough sooner or later someone will compare someone or something to Hitler or his deeds.

MN Godwin's Law: The more fractious a debate gets, and the more fierce the disagreement between posters, the more certain it becomes that someone will say another poster is "sad" and "has no life" because they're invested in a forum discussion. Crucially, the person making the accusation will see no irony in this.

Happens a lot, no? What should we call it?

Lawrence?! What the fuck?! Law. LAW.

Apologies. I have an aggressive autocorrect.

OP posts:
valeriarrgh · 13/07/2017 09:48

I think we should absolutely call it Godwins Lawrence. Best autocorrect ever!

valeriarrgh · 13/07/2017 09:52

Doing a Lawrence! Brilliant!

ShowOfHands · 13/07/2017 09:54

Best auto correct ever? Brilliant? This place has gone downhill.

Get a life indeed.

missiondecision · 13/07/2017 09:57

I also think Godwin Lawrence sounds better !
Very intriguing I couldn't not read your thread.

derxa · 13/07/2017 10:20

It's Trump now especially on here.

valeriarrgh · 13/07/2017 10:27

Oh dear Showofhands who rattled your cage?

AlpacaPicnic · 13/07/2017 10:28

Is Showofhands being ironic?
I can't tell...

EdwardGorey · 13/07/2017 10:47

Me neither Alpaca. But it's too early in the thread for invoking the Lawrence, there needs to be at least three pages of slanging first.

I think an irony bypass is quite common among internet commenters. I particularly enjoyed a Facebook-slagging thread where someone said "And this is why I don't do social media." Er, what do you think Mumsnet is?

The Guardian site seems to attract a lot of people attacking other commenters as "Guardian readers", e.g. "Typical Guardianista..." If they think commenting on a Guardian article makes you a Guardian reader, what do they think they are?

Anyway, agree with the OP about Godwin's Lawrence.

VladmirsPoutine · 13/07/2017 11:21

I agree OP.

And at some point during the thread someone will almost always criticise another's grammar even if what they've said is largely understood.

SoupDragon · 13/07/2017 11:23

I'm too busy laughing at Lawrence to offer anything sensible...

VladmirsPoutine · 13/07/2017 11:23

That said, I do think there's a huge difference between the odd misspelling or grammatical error and consistent use of 'Would of' 'Should of' etc. It does get on my tits tbh.

Pumperthepumper · 13/07/2017 12:28

Could someone please explain to me why Goodwins Lawrence is funny? Is that a person?

VladmirsPoutine · 13/07/2017 12:47

pumper in essence the principle that every online discussion will, at some point, result in a reference to Hitler is known as 'Godwin's Law'. The OP made a typo which corrected to the term to 'Lawrence.' It's funny because simply it's a random typographical error. It may not be the funniest thing on earth but there you go.

Pumperthepumper · 13/07/2017 12:58

Thanks. I know about Godwins Law, thought there was something I was missing.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 13/07/2017 13:11

Oh yes, Godwins Lawrence, very much needed. And the threads that at first glance seem so innocuous are the worst. I glanced at a 'Shall I paint DCs bedroom this or that?' thread recently, completely nice, reasonable little thread. Then I went back to it earlier today and it was about twenty pages on and had developed in to a full on slanging match! Felt like I'd slipped in to an alternative universe. They were definitely doing a Lawrence.

Flofferton · 13/07/2017 13:14

Godwin's Lawrence.

KeiraKnightleyActsWithHerTeeth · 13/07/2017 13:16

What happens if someone spells Lawrence wrong and we end up with frilly curtains?

Like Laurence LB?

To think we need an MN version of Godwin's Lawrence?
Autofillcontact · 13/07/2017 13:17

No I think the MN godwins lawrence should be

If you've taken the time and effort to engage in a lengthy discussion MNHQ willl always delete it

MadgeMidgerson · 13/07/2017 13:20

Llewelyn bowen

MumBod · 13/07/2017 14:34

Godwin's Lawrence dictates that any OP innocently starting a thread on what dog to buy or what they should feed their DC will find themselves in the midst of a shitshow of a clusterfuck, the likes of which they have never experienced before.
