Not really an AIBU but posting for traffic - my waters have gone, I'm in hospital but no-one seems to be able to tell me what happens next. Anyone around with experience/knowledge they'd like to share?Sad

I think it depends on how much water. I didn't have DD for 4 days after water broke. They tried various ways to induce. Unless baby in distress I think they let nature take its course that was 20 years ago though.
Hopefully someone with more recent experience will come along soon
Oh and congratulations Flowers

I had my baby the next day! Had some drugs to speed things along and antibiotics. Luckily all was fine and now have a healthy 9 year old!

honeyrider · 13/07/2017 00:16

I went into labour about 12 - 15 hours later and had him the next day.

Dilligaf81 · 13/07/2017 00:17

My waters went at 36 weeks I got sent home to see if anything started if not to come back the next morning to be induced. Had a pessary at 11am had him at 23:30. Good luck, exciting times x

minipie · 13/07/2017 00:19

Have you had any contractions? If not, I believe they will give it a couple of days to see if labour begins but then will want to induce you due to infection risk. I'm not sure whether you'll be sent home or kept in, might be kept in due to being slightly pre term? you will need antibiotics in labour too.

AnUnhappyStudent · 13/07/2017 00:19

Kept in overnight as type 1 diabetic and 2 injections to help babies lungs 'harden' I think was the term they used??? Then had healthy baby next day. Good luck Flowers

Thank you! Quite a lot of water, it's been trickling out all day, I thought my pelvic floor had given up and I was peeing myself Blush

My waters went at 35 weeks with my twins. I think they gave injections for their lungs. I was already booked in for a section anyway, so just had it earlier than planned.

I would imagine if there's no complications they'd let you go into labour naturally.

My twins were in SCBU for 10 days, mainly to get feeding sorted.

Good luck OP, I hope things go well for you and baby.

I had my baby the next day! My waters broke in a massive gush at about 8.30pm, was in hospital by 10pm, contractions started just before midnight and my son was born 2pm the following day. Good luck! x

LordBuckley · 13/07/2017 00:34

Mine broke at 35 weeks and labour started almost immediately. The baby was born a few hours later, and spent about 10 days in an incubator. He's a strapping lad now.

MrsABrown72 · 13/07/2017 00:44

I had a baby after waters broke! I had the plug thing the day before but had no idea what the plug was (first and only baby) and then she arrived at 12.30 the next day. Very short labour but think the midwife broke waters as I was so dilated and contractions 2 mins apart when I got to hospital. Still forceps though as her heartbeat kept dropping and then she was so small (undetected before, 4lb4) so in ICU for 12 days.
Relax as much as you can x

GotToGetMyFingerOut · 13/07/2017 00:45

Waters started leaking slowly at 5am. Went to hospital at 3pm. Wasn't contracting or dilating but they kept me in due to being preterm and the risk of infection.

Was checked on the contraction monitor throughout the night and still wasn't contracting.

Taken to labour ward next day at 10 am. Checked and I was 5cm dilated but still showing as not contracting. At 10.46 they burst the rest of my waters that went with a big gush and my contractions started straight away full strength and after an hour I was 10cm. Pushed for ten minutes and she was born at 11.56.

Her apgar score was good. She didn't need any help breathing or anything and we stayed in a couple of nights. Her blood glucose dropped a couple of times and she struggled to warm up so they put her on a wee heat Matt and a under a wee lamp for jaundice other than that we were fine.

Yikes, so I should expect baby to be born soon! Shock That's terrifying! I was expecting a few more weeks to get organised (just moved house)!

My baby was born about 3 hours later...I too was gutted that I'd missed out on 2 weeks (non baby!)mat leave!

Storminateapot · 13/07/2017 01:17

I gave birth within a couple of hours. They were twins and they were absolutely fine, no special care needed.

GwendolynMary · 13/07/2017 01:46

I was 37W when my waters broke. I was asked to attend the hospital quickly, because DD was breech/transverse at the last appointment. They did a scan, found she had a cord presentation and then whisked me off to theatre for a caesarean. She was born in under 2hrs!!

DS' waters broke at 38w. He was head down, so I was given 24hrs to get labour started. We had active labour for ages before they let me have a caesarean. Born just under 1.5 days after the waters broke.

ButterflyFree · 13/07/2017 02:25

Hi OP - I'm in a similar boat to you currently! I'm 37+4 today so a little bit ahead of you.

My waters went at 5:45pm today (well, technically yesterday as we are now into the small hours) and my midwife asked me to come in for monitoring at 8:30pm. Hooked me up to the CTG for an hour and all looked good for baby & me so they've sent me home overnight. They just asked me to check my temperature every 4hrs and if it goes above 37.5 I should head straight to the hospital. Also told to keep an eye on any changes to the colour of the water as it's still leaking - currently completely clear and odourless - as well as paying attention to any drastic change in foetal movements.

Still not had any contractions yet whatsoever. I've been instructed to go back in again at 2pm for more monitoring, and if contractions haven't started naturally by 6pm then an induction will be necessary as they only tend to allow 24hrs between waters going and bringing on labour. She did say we could possibly stretch it to 36hrs though, as long as there were absolutely no signs of infection. I've also been cleared already for not having group b strep - if you weren't tested or if you tested positive for it they would likely want to induce labour sooner rather than later.

Good luck!! Let's hope things get underway spontaneously for us both 🤞🏻

Mislou · 13/07/2017 02:42

Born 8 hours later. Some light pain started about 4 hours after waters broke.

T00ManyB00ks · 13/07/2017 03:22

Waters broke at 5:30am, baby arrived at 12pm!
we went in and wore a heart rate monitor. She was born all ok and didn't need any extra help. She is pretty tiny though! Good luck.

Hi Hedgehog, I've had 2 boys early at 32 weeks with both times my waters breaking. First one, ended up in local hospital/birth centre for a couple of days with Dr thinking that I was just peeing myself & didnt know what I was talking about. Trsfrd to a larger regional hospital b4 the weekend in case he was born early (he was) where I got drips to slow (very mild) labour & steroids for his lungs. But waiting, waiting all the same. Boy #2 also born at 32 weeks, same scenario but just knew more of the wait & see approach. I guess the hospital will want to check if your labour is progressing or whether a hurry along will be given - is that when they might induce (I'm not sure about that, never need inductions :) ) or if baby is getting a bit stressed with stuff, whether anything else is to happen. Boring asf when you have lots at home to do, so good luck & hope your waiting is over soon.

AHedgehogCanNeverBeBuggered · 13/07/2017 06:46

Thanks for the reassurance folks. No contractions yet, cervix closed up tight...

My waters broke at 35+3. When I rang my midwife she tried telling me it was far too early to be my waters but to ring the hospital. Same story with them but I kept persisting and they allowed me to go in. Sure enough when I get there "oh yes they're definitely broken" no shit sherlock. I was hooked up to a machine that measures contractions. I was having them, but the machine couldn't pick them all up so I was put in a bed in the corner and pretty much left alone unless the nurse was taking my blood pressure. The pain got worse and worse, I was refused medication because the MACHINE wasn't reading my contractions, so according to them I wasn't having any. The next morning they try sending me home but I refused. I was in so much pain. Again they left me pretty much all day. It got to the point where I was told to stop making so much noise. My husband grabbed the first dr he could and I demanded to be examined, I could literally feel the baby coming out.
"Well we haven't examined you because nothing seems to have changed" again demanded and he did. "Yes, you're 6cm dilated let's get you to delivery". After I left that ward, everything changed. It was the perfect delivery. Baby was 5lb, had to have antibiotics because they thought she might have sepsis and hubby wasn't allowed to stay but it all worked out in the end.

My waters went at 36 weeks and I was kept in the hospital despite clamped shut cervix and no contractions. I was told they would induce me when I reached 37 if nothing had progressed naturally. After three days on antibiotics in a ward, finally contractions kicked off and my baby was born the following day. I did need a lot of assistance towards the end including inducing halfway through because my contractions started to slow, but I had a nice healthy baby!
