To think this was cheeky?

Recently had a house clear out and sold an umbrella style pushchair that DS has outgrown. Posted it on the local selling page for £10.
A lady messaged me asking if I would take £7 for it. I couldn't really be bothered at this point, thought maybe she needs one and is really struggling for cash so i agreed to the sale and she arranged to pick up the following day.
When she turned up, she brought a £20 note and expected me to have £13 change to hand for her! I didn't, I only had £10, so she said she didn't want it.
AIBU to think turning up to collect something you've bought second hand off the internet without the correct change is a bit off?!

Yabu. It's not cheeky. If I was selling something I'd probably have some change in. Maybe she thought you wanted £10 and that you were being cheeky.
Selling stuff sounds a total pita.

elphabathegreenone · 12/07/2017 21:57

yèah i would have expected the right change did she just leave without it then op?

bluepinkflower · 12/07/2017 21:59

icelolly I had £10 in change on me, I wasn't expecting someone to turn up with a £20 note for a £7 item.
Yes just left without it.

YANBU I'd be annoyed. But this is Facebook selling, I'd expect nothing else. In fact I'm surprised that she didn't turn up and demand it for free.

icelollycraving · 12/07/2017 22:00

I'd hope someone would have the right money but I guess I'd be prepared.
I think she thought you were chancing your arm for the original £10.

bluepinkflower · 12/07/2017 22:01

I usually just do a charity shop run but we had quite a bit of stuff this time so I thought I may as well try and make some money out of it. First and last time, it's no end of hassle!

I think it was a bit cheeky. I would have expected her to have the right money. You are not a shop for goodness sake.

Italiangreyhound · 12/07/2017 22:03

Not cheeky, just silly, she beat you down in price and did not come prepared. Sell it to someone who will have the right money, you are not a shop!

bluepinkflower · 12/07/2017 22:03

If I'd had the right change I would have given it - £7 was the price we agreed on it, so of course I wouldn't chance it and think no, I'll just try and get £10 for it. If I wanted to do that, I would have declined and tried to sell it to someone else. I can't give someone anymore change than I have in the house.

FB selling is hell! I'd rather give the stuff away free. So many bad experiences means I just don't bother anymore.

phoenixtherabbit · 12/07/2017 22:07

I don't think Yabu.

I'm surprised she even turned up. I've had so many no shows and it's always the ones who ask u to wait until a week next Friday and promise they won't let you down that just don't turn up with no explanation

Urubu · 12/07/2017 22:08

Bring the correct change and a bag are the rules when buying off facebook so YANBU

icelollycraving · 12/07/2017 22:13

I am not a buyer of stuff in this way so I wouldn't know the rules!

VeryButchyRestingFace · 12/07/2017 22:16

If you think that's bad, OP, you should see what happens when you try to give stuff away via Gumtree/FB Marketplace/Freecycle for free. GrinHmmGrinHmm

IfYouGoDownToTheWoodsToday · 12/07/2017 22:27

Maybe she really needed that extra £3.

I don't think she was being cheeky.

abbey44 · 12/07/2017 22:29

Gumtree can be a pain - I was trying to get rid of a double divan a couple of years ago and put it on Gumtree as free for collection. Guy turned up & could only fit the mattress in his car, but said he'd be back for the base. Needless to say, he didn't, despite a couple of calls to ask when he was coming to pick it up. In the end I had to hire a van to take it to the tip, then got charged trade rates (because it was in a van) to dispose of it.

Now I put a price on things, no matter how nominal. Seems to focus the mind a bit better.

VeryButchyRestingFace · 12/07/2017 22:31

Maybe she really needed that extra £3.

Then she should have had the wit not to turn up with a £20 note. It doesn't really support the idea that she's down to her last £7.

Gingerandgivingzerofucks · 12/07/2017 22:31

YANBU. I've sold loads on eBay. I do not expect to have to give change when someone turns up to collect stuff. If you order a takeaway and pay on delivery, you don't expect the delivery guy to give you change, do you? I don't, I have the exact amount plus tip.

Nocabbageinmyeye · 12/07/2017 22:32

Not cheeky but disorganised I suppose, I would have had the £7, I would have been annoyed at the waste of time alright

Dibbles1967 · 12/07/2017 22:34

Personally, I would have turned up with the right money.

When I moved last year I put my living room furniture on Ebay with a reserve of £50. It didn't sell. 2 Enormous three seater leather sofas, 2 huge armchairs & 2 footstools. They were so big I knew it would be difficult to get shot of as a whole. A week before my move I put them back on for 3 days as I had to get rid, or pay to have them taken away (wouldn't even get through the door of next place)

They went for 99p. Shock 2 guys came, said they were going on a container to Nigeria the next day - gave me a pound and asked for change...

Squarerouteofsquirrel · 12/07/2017 22:37

She should have had the correct change. If I've haggled someone down over the price of something, then I wouldn't turn up waving notes around and expecting change.
Paranoid me would anticipate the seller trying to 'pull a stunt' similar to you, I know you haven't! So I would want to be ahead of the game, so to speak Smile and have the correct change.

bluepinkflower · 12/07/2017 22:46

I've given things away free before on those pages and it's more hassle than it's worth! Once had someone ask if I could deliver a free bedside table - err, no! The pushchair went to the charity shop the next day.

YANBU, she should have had the correct money. She probably thought you'd tell her to just take it anyway(for nothing), these people know that the seller needs rid and it's taking up space.

harasas · 12/07/2017 23:04

You're not a shop, why would you have change. She should have turned up with the correct money.

gamerchick · 12/07/2017 23:10

YANBU, she should have had the correct money. She probably thought you'd tell her to just take it anyway(for nothing), these people know that the seller needs rid and it's taking up space

That's exactly what she was expecting.
