I know its noting to do with me but it really makes me cross when I see a mother wrapped up with thick jumpers and coat on pushing a buggy with a tiny child in dressed in just a thin T-Shirt & skirt with sandles in this weather its freezing today!

You can see the child is so cold wind blowing into them, especially here where the wind comes off the sea

Saw this quite a few times today walking through town

Well, recently my two year old had the mother of all tantrums about wearing sock and shoes. It was freezing cold (day after snowfall) and I ended up pushing her round town in her pushchair like this. Got some horrible looks and a few people did comment. So it may not necessarily been the mother's fault.

BTW I did have some socks and shoes with me in case she changed her mind when she got cold. She didn't.

Hi pennies,

These had been dressed like it, I know what you mean about the sock sinario though

i often dress my children in light layers than one thick layer. I remember one instance of dd1 refusing point blank to put her cardy, coat and long socks back on after soft play. it was fereezing outside. but dd1 didnt feel the cold. she would take her coat off waiting for nursery to open, all the other kdis would copy and then put their coats back on as they were too cold.

NotQuiteCockney · 24/03/2007 19:36

I really doubt anyone is thinking 'hey, I don't care about my kid being cold' - I bet every single time, it's a stubborn and/or very warm child.

preggerspoppet · 24/03/2007 19:37

ugh, makes me furious, especially when it is a baby (who couldn't have refused the coat) I get the thing about a toddler refusing but when they are sat in their pushchair whinging and obviously miserably cold I feel very sorry for them.
bit like seeing a baby without a sunhat in the hot sun, that really freaks me out!
gosh I sound like an old git face!

Gingermonkey · 24/03/2007 19:43

My nephew is a sweaty little monkey and is only 6 months old. If you wrap him up warm he goes bright red and screams. My poor sil gets looks from people all the time because she is a big cold wuss and is always wrapped up and the monkey is out in a long sleeved top but no coat. (But I do agree that I get wound up by little ones dressed inappropriately for the weather and why do they even own sandals at this time of the year, eh????!!!!)

3easterbunniesandnomore · 24/03/2007 19:59

OH yes, this is a truely brittish thing, tbh, and it pees me off...however, when I am visiting germany I tend to get pissed off with german moms when they are in their lil bikin top and shorts, cos it's boiling and their lil one is in the pram heavily clothed including a wooly hat plus big duvet...I mean, wtf....try to use some common sense people!
And no I am not talking about a prem Baby, I know that with them different guidelines apply!

scatterbrain · 24/03/2007 20:03

The judging pisses me off more to be honest !!

My dd usually refuses to wear a coat, or a cardi or socks or tights ! She says she is too hot - she has a tantrum - either I let her go out as she is or we both miss out on something !

She hasn't died of cold yet !

Maybe it was me you saw ! Thanks so much for judging ! Obviosuly you know best !

LowFatMilkshake · 24/03/2007 20:06

I feel so sorry for these poor children, I suspect it's 50/50 half are dressed to be "mummy's little fashion accessorie" the other half are children of mums who are trying to prove a point to their DC's that "it really is cold outside, but if you think shorts and sandals are a good choice....go right ahead!.

Having said that I am one of those who takes clothes for a contingency. Warm in case it goes cold, and short and hat incase it turns warm. Pre-school trip to the farm was a mare last year! And as I dont drive I normaly look like a pack mule!

And since DD has been dressing heself I do have to get in her room before she opens the drawers to negociate her choice of outfit!

LilyLoo · 24/03/2007 20:06

Maybe not the t shirt without the jacket but my dd has been wearing socks rather than thick tights etc for ease with potty training could have been that!

misdee · 24/03/2007 20:07

nothing poor about my dd1, thank you very much. she was jsu ta hot child who didnt like to be wrapped up.

scatterbrain · 24/03/2007 20:07

Yes and mine is just a stroppy one !

HillarysDancingInTheFairyField · 24/03/2007 20:08

Scatterbrain I'm talking about mothers who deliberatley dress their dc's in skimpy fashionable clothes, not getting to you who actually tries to put the tights etc on your dc. These babies well to me they looked about 13months were wearing things you would go out clubbing in. Today was so cold, our town centre is straight off the sea front and believe me it was bloody freezing.

The dc's were shaking with cold.

children have dodgy thermostats though. dd often refuses to wear a coat. I make her wear it but a mother more libertarian than me might not.

scatterbrain · 24/03/2007 20:10

But how do you know ??

Judgeth not unless ye know for sure !!!

chicaguapa · 24/03/2007 20:13

I had this with DD & DS. Both of them hate being hot and I used to have to take them out as babies without coats on or they'd scream blue murder. I got looks too but my DC's comfort was more important.

What bothers me is when you see babies screaming in shops when they have their coat on. Can't the parents see their DC is roasting?

HillarysDancingInTheFairyField · 24/03/2007 20:15

You don't need to quote to me, I'm a mother as are you and you know when a baby's cold, like if they are blue and shivering in a wind which blows you off your feet. People were wearing hats and scarfs today no joke. This child was not old enough to say I'm not wearing that she wasn't a toddler she was a baby.

I have a one year old and a 3 year old, I understand when a child is hot from being everywhere all at the same time.

You don't need to get so defensive.

Have a go at them then

Gingermonkey · 24/03/2007 20:18

I know what you are getting at, Hillarys. These are the same kids that wear high heeled shoes at 3 years old. I judge, I'm sorry, I'm a snob . And I got the summer next directory today and in it there was a monokini - you know, swimsuit with the sides cut out (sexy lady type of thing - only for big breasted types with a good wax job 'down there') and it started at age 3-4. Oooh, I was going mental!!! (Wish I could do a link but I am useless)

HillarysDancingInTheFairyField · 24/03/2007 20:22

Hi Gingermonkey

I know I don't know whats happened to babies clothes, the shops are full of halterneck tops and one sholder tops etc from newborn+ babies are not babies anymore its so sad.

preggerspoppet · 24/03/2007 20:26

(I judge )

LadyOfTheFlowersAKACodsPatsy · 24/03/2007 20:27

omg! they alllook so grown up!
wheni was that age i had a straightforward swinsuit with little frills reound the leg holes and if i didnt like it, i didnt go swimming!

Gingermonkey · 24/03/2007 20:28

DD went to a school disco last night and was dressed in a trendy outfit, but not tarty (she'll be 8 in August) and I was horrified with some of the outfits the girls were wearing, and how much make up they had on. I am by no means a frump, DD and me were shopping today in Harvey Nichols, she loves clothes and so do I, but I will not allow her to dress like a Bratz doll. I get really upset by it.
