AIBU about sausages and mash?

User73milliontrilliondillion · 12/07/2017 13:28

I'm probably going to get slammed for this but...
As a VERY rare treat I've picked DD up from nursery and popped into Sainsbury's to have a quick lunch. She wanted sausages, so I ordered her sausages and mash, and she was confused by the fact there was a single sausage on her plate. She ate it and asked for another, I explained that there was only one and she responded by saying but there's always two! Agreeing with her that I'd have expected two I went ask to enquire, and ended up paying 80p for a second sausage, I'm trying to decide if I should complain!! AIBU and lost the plot here.

In my defence a few years ago I was amazed a kids portion of fish fingers came with four fish fingers!!

Also why would you get slammed for going to a cafe for lunch? We go to Sainsbury's cafe once a week after nursery for lunch (it's not my favourite place but its round the corner from nursery) its fine!

ClashCityRocker · 12/07/2017 14:07

That's not bad for three quid but I can't see a twelve year old being over chuffed with it!

If the were smallish sausages than I would expect two. One sounds more of a toddler sized meal.

BitOutOfPractice · 12/07/2017 14:11

I also really want sausage and mash now. Damn you OP

Decaffstilltastesweird · 12/07/2017 14:11

Ah fish fingers are a different beast entirely though! Theres only about 65 calories in a Birdseye fish finger. There's usually about 150 in a sausage (I think)? Not that children need to count calories, just that sausages are a lot more filling.

Decaffstilltastesweird · 12/07/2017 14:12

I too now need sausage and mash!

MrsOverTheRoad · 12/07/2017 14:12

If it's a child's meal advertised as such and costs only 3 quid, I'd be happy with one sausage.

I have a 12 year old and she's not had child's meals since she was about ten...she's tall and skinny and a child's portion has not been enough...but she also doesn't like nuggets and all that and prefers "adult" food.

I'd be happy with one sausage but do understand the usual being two.

MrsOverTheRoad · 12/07/2017 14:13

Oh three quid for that PLUS drink and fruit! Then it's no surprise there was only one sausage really.

They've got to make some profit!

DataColour · 12/07/2017 14:15

I think £3.80 for a meal, drink and a piece of fruit is a good deal.
When mine were nursery aged, one sausage would have been enough...a proper sized one though, not a chipolata.

PatriciaHolm · 12/07/2017 14:17

Oh gawd. This is going to be another of Those Sausage Threads, isn't it.

Where half the population of MN say 1 sausage is bordering on greedy for an adult and others routinely chomp on 5 or more for breakfast.....

EJREsMum · 12/07/2017 14:24

User73 If this was the main meal of the day then yes I would've asked for 2. And like a PP said if it said 'sausages' then I would've expected 2.

I was just assuming as lunch isn't a main meal and most don't like to over feed at lunch in case of spoiling dinner.

alwaysthepessimist · 12/07/2017 14:30

2 - my dd had an M&S ready meal for tea last night (bad me) - sausages, mash & beans, kids meal too, still had 2 sausages. She was amazed by the plastic tray & refused to let me put it on a plate - she is 5 btw

TheMysteriousJackelope · 12/07/2017 14:32

I agree with previous posters. 'Sausages and mash' = two or more sausages, 'Sausage and mash' = 1.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 12/07/2017 14:32

Dinner 2. Lunch 1

See, I have this thing where dinner for me is, like, between 7-10pm and for my mother it is between noon and 1pm...

YetAnotherSpartacus · 12/07/2017 14:34

I too now need sausage and mash

With onion gravy.

WorraLiberty · 12/07/2017 14:35

She's only in nursery.

1 sausage and mash for a midday meal, is perfectly normal imo.

As an adult I have 2 and my adult/teenage boys will have 2 or 3 depending on how hungry they are, but that's for their evening meal.

WomblingThree · 12/07/2017 14:36

Oh get over yourself 2014newme

GraceGrape · 12/07/2017 14:37

I only eat 2 sausages as an adult portion so would have thought 1 is fine for a preschooler. I am a little and often eater though.

However, at £3 I don't think you should make a complaint. If your DD wants a bigger lunch than that, maybe take her somewhere that serves bigger portions but you pay more.

Serialweightwatcher · 12/07/2017 14:39

I would expect two on child's portion and 3 or more on adults - think it's a very stingy portion but I'm not overly impressed with Sainsburys cafes anyway - ages ago I went and they had omelette on the menu - asked if I could have scrambled eggs instead and they said 'no' - I asked how can you have omelette but not scrambled with a Hmm look on my face, to be told they are sent in as an omelette and warmed - they're not allowed to cook anymore Confused

Gothbaby · 12/07/2017 14:39

suitable for 3-12 year old?
I know a little lady (12 yr) who would be very annoyed at only getting one sausage!! Its always 2 especially advertising it as plural? i totally get for a younger child 2 may be too much but its a cafe? surley thats something to worry about on day to day home meals rather than a little treat eating out? xxxx

IHaveBrilloHair · 12/07/2017 14:39

You went to a cafe and allowed your child to eat sausage.
I am outraged, what is wrong with avocado and cashew butter?
Everyone knows sausages kill.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 12/07/2017 14:43

Everyone knows sausages kill

Of course when I said 'sausage' I really meant Linda McCartney Vegan sausage.

Just saying.

WorraLiberty · 12/07/2017 14:43

According to their menu it's suitable for children aged 5 - 10 years.

238 calories without the drink and the fruit.

BitOutOfPractice · 12/07/2017 14:47

Sainsburys is well known for its killer sausages.

Thesingingtoad · 12/07/2017 14:47

I worked in a cafe when I was 16 and the owner was a swizzler.

The menu said "sausages, chip and ..." but the owner said "put one sausage on the plate and if they ask for another sausage then charge them for it"

One morning, the owner was all of a panic changing the menus as a disgruntled customer had called trading standards about it.

I would write a letter of complaint to Sainsburys for a refund and if you don't get any joy complain to Trading Standards.

Decaffstilltastesweird · 12/07/2017 14:48

I wouldn't worry that my (2.5yo) DD would eat too much, she just wouldn't eat it! So it would only end up being eaten by me in the bin.

I do think 12yos would be able to eat two though... but then it was only £3.

I'm sure I remember having one sausage and chips, (I grew up in the 90s when chips were de rigueur in children's meals), out in shopping centre cafes as a child. They were larger sausages though. Maybe 5 inches long and an inch and a half in diameter. Sorry, typing that made me snort laugh .
