To think I should be paid more than the cleaner?

I really dislike my current job so my general annoyance may be U because of that and I'm desperate to leave. I started a few months ago after being made redundant, during the interview I said I wanted £xk salary, they offered £xk-10k, this was a 20k drop in my pre-redundancy salary but I figured any job at the time is better than eating my way through my redundancy payment.

So I went to think it over and in the meantime received another offer for £xk-5k, my now employer wouldn't match the salary, they were adamant they need to keep salaries low for the business sake, but it was supposed to be a better role, no commute, more responsibility etc.

Today, the finance director who sits next to me was talking to someone and mentioned the salary for the cleaner, which works out at over £10 an hour more than I get and pretty much double any rates I've ever seen advertised for cleaners. I was pretty much gobsmacked and the more I think about it the more annoyed I'm getting.

I fully accept I made a mistake when choosing the job, and it was severely mis-sold however the salary issue is really bugging me. My business function, 10 years of experience, and spending the last few months increasing their revenue and rectifying stupid mistakes they've made because they hire people with no experience and no idea how to train them because none of the management team have worked in the business function I do, to keep their salary costs down, brings far more value to the company than the cleaner. AIBU to think I should be paid more?!

Digital Product Manager is likely a generic role title for someone who manages a company's product development / marketing using digital media e.g. The internet, website and electronic advertising etc

If you can't read everything at least read the op's posts.

She's made it quite clear that the cleaner is an employee - agencies and self employment aren't relevant. How ever many hours she works she gets £25 for each of them. What she does the rest of the time is neither here nor there.

Good luck with finding another job op

I've seen it all now. Fuckit I don't disagree that a cleaner is an important role in a hospital BUT you would have no hospital without doctors. Putting it simply, all the doctors can clean but none of the cleaners can treat patients.

I'm in the private sector and as someone who has taken the time to get qualified through many hours of study and long hours of working I expect to get paid more than a cleaner.

I understand where the OP is coming from and sadly I've been on the receiving end of being undervalued because I'm a mother of young DC. It's taken me 5 years to get over it.

Want2bSupermum · 14/07/2017 12:56

To clarify, when I say get over it I mean get paid what I'm worth.

cherry2727 · 14/07/2017 13:45

I believe this is getting misconstrued. Though the cleaner's hourly rate is higher than the op's, she isn't working as many hours as the Op so her overall pay would be considerably less than Op. I'm sure if Op was only working , say ,3 hours a day, then her hourly rate would be considerably higher.
I have a baby Sitter who picks my son up from nursery and stays home with him for about an hour or two an evening for three days a week. Her hourly rate works out more than the nursery , however , i end up paying her much less than the nursery on a weekly basis as she works far less hours.

Op - most practical advise is to find another job if you don't think that you're valued fairly in your current role . I wish you all the best x

I pay my cleaner £22 an hour, but she's only here for 2-3 hours a week. A good cleaner deserves a decent wage.

SandyDenny · 14/07/2017 17:27

But cherry that's not the point, it's not about the overall pay it's about the hourly wage.

The only way to compare jobs is by the hourly wage, a minimum wage 16 year old who works full time isn't better off then someone who earns £25 per hour but only works 1 hour a day simply because the 16 year old gets more ££ per week.

Many nurses get the same per hour £15.
Look for another job.
