Not Aibu

If you are a teacher and or a one to one support worker and the child you looked after was leaving the school would you think an orchid as a gift is naff?
Any other ideas people please also very much appreciated

lovely gift:)

OneOfTheGrundys · 07/07/2017 20:34

Not naff at all. You'd have to not be offended if I managed to kill it though!

Wheresthattomoibabber · 07/07/2017 20:34

About 80% of staff in our school cycle in. I'd check that first! Lovely gift though.

PurpleDaisies · 07/07/2017 20:34

It's definitely not naff.

I really like orchids and they're quite low maintenance.

PotteringAlong · 07/07/2017 20:34

No, but I will go away for the first 2 weeks of the holiday and it will be dead by the time I get back so I will only enjoy it for 24 hours.

CarrieBlue · 07/07/2017 20:35

I'm always very very touched by any present I receive - an orchid sounds lovely! I had a signed rugby ball once (for when I'm famous, miss, you'll already have my autograph) - best present ever! Grin

PurpleDaisies · 07/07/2017 20:35

pottering orchids can happily survive without being watered for two weeks.

PotteringAlong · 07/07/2017 20:36

Ooh, good to know Smile

Piratesandpants · 07/07/2017 20:36

What a lovely gift - it would be very much appreciated.

mineofuselessinformation · 07/07/2017 20:45

I wouldn't be offended at any form of present, personally.

iwishiwasrichandthin · 07/07/2017 20:46

I thought about nice chocs but kinda like the thought that it would be kept probably massively over sentimental however these ladies have been with my dc since he was 5 got him through diagnoses of asd, his statement, they got him talking and writing etc they are truly amazing. He's leaving to go to a more specialised school he got a place because of the help and advice they provided. I really want to say hankyou for everything they've done for him and for putting up with my tears and tantrums Wink

Please no chocs! Dh and I had forty boxes between us one year (both teachers).

It sounds like the school have been great, and I hope the new place works out well for your son.

WhyNotDuckie · 07/07/2017 20:53

An orchid would be lovely.

switswoo81 · 07/07/2017 20:54

I got a beautiful orchid from a child last week when we finished up. It has pride of place on my mantle and I will try not to kill it!

switswoo81 · 07/07/2017 20:55

Actually plants are a great present in general got 3 and dh planted them
the other day. Last longer than flowers

falgelednl · 07/07/2017 20:56

Any presents are lovely and appreciated. An orchid would be especially lovely.
I donate excess chocolates to local NICU to be enjoyed as we can only eat so many - but I am still very happy to receive them and do so gracefully.

Waterlemon · 07/07/2017 21:02

Orchids are the only plants that Ive not managed to kill! I have 3 from past pupils that are still going. One is at least 10 years old! So great idea.

I have a long commute to work and chocolates always melt (if they haven't already melted in the classroom)

I do love a card that's been handwritten by the child, a homemade card is an extra bonus!

iwishiwasrichandthin · 07/07/2017 21:04

Thank you all so much for you replies. A homemade card and orchids it is. Thank you to you all for doing the job you do I could never do it I have no patience GinFlowers

I'd love it. I have one that one of 'my'teachers gave me (I'm a ta) a few years ago. It lives in my bathroom, gets watered when I remember (so not often) and rewards me with a beautifully display of flowers every year. It usually comes into bloom just as we break up for the summer and I find myself clearing the last of the flowers away around the end of October. I love it and it reminds me of my lovely former colleague every time I look at it.
Go for it. 🌸

PurplePeppers · 07/07/2017 21:17

When my dc left school, I gave one of his teacher an orchid too as well as a card explaining how much I appreciated the work she had done with him.
I wasn't sure It was appropriate as she had him several years before but the card she sent me after told me that she really reallly appreciated it (est as the year had been very hard for her).

I think that more than the gift, the message was the most important for her and something she said she will always treasure.
Tell those loeveky women what you have just said here. They will treasure it too!

Judydreamsofhorses · 07/07/2017 21:19

I'd love it. I got a beautiful bouquet of peonies from some students the other week (I teach in FE) and felt really sad when I had to chuck them out.
