He's 5.

He barely slept last night, it was horribly hot and he ended up in our bed. He was talking in his sleep loads, which he usually only does when he's brewing a bug. Someone's car alarm went off three times in the night and he cried before settling each time.

He's still asleep now, unsurprisingly. Drenched in sweat.

We would leave in an hour. I'm tempted to leave him be and see if he wakes up and gets ready, rather than wake him up and wrangle him.

Wwyd? I'm watching the news in bed and the teenagers are stomping around getting ready so it's not like we're tiptoeing around him, and he usually bounces out of bed at around 6am.

If leave him. Let him sleep in and see how he is when he wakes up. No point sending him in if he's sick!

Think I would leave him until he wakes up, then see how he is. He's only 5, he can't miss out on too much!

I would take him in but let the teacher know he had a bad nights sleep so may be tired

RickOShay · 07/07/2017 07:20

Day off I think. He will be too tired to focus, and will probably get worse, not better at school.

Report

welshweasel · 07/07/2017 07:22

Can you take him in late? I think if he's not actually ill when he wakes then I'd take him, particularly if he had a bit of a lie in first.

I think I'll let him sleep then, and see how he is when he wakes up. I can always take him in later if he's fine.

He's snoring right now and has moved his sweaty little head onto my arm so now I'm stuck. Grin

It's not terrible, he's had a few days here and there for colds and a tummy bug. Fairly standard for reception though IME.

I would leave him. Definately.

If he was 15 I might tell him to get up!

Leave him, it sounds like he has a fever and sleeping it off.

Besides it's nearly the holidays and he's only 5.

EssieTregowan · 07/07/2017 08:01

He's still asleep now and we'd have to leave in a few minutes.

I'll call school in a bit and explain. A duvet day won't hurt anyone.

I'd leave him. You know how you'd feel going to work with a crappy nights sleep, and that coupled with you believing he may be coming down with something, wont do him any favours.

If he wakes naturally and in time I'd see how he is, shower and off to school/the couch depending on how he is.
If he wakes later and is fine, off to school with a quite word about why he is late.

Peng he's 5 fgs. Iam also a teacher, I don't like a load tired out \possibly ill kids in my class. The OFSTED nonsense is utter nonsense.

claritytobeclear · 07/07/2017 08:49

Yes, keep him off. It sounds like he has a temperature/fever. No need for long winded, apologetic, explanations, I don't think - have confidence in your own observation.

Hope he feels better after his long weekend!
I think in this heat they must all be exhausted as well.

sailorcherries · 07/07/2017 09:29

Peng as a teacher I'd rather a child who had a poor nights sleep, and was possibly ill, missed one day of school. They won't learn when feeling so poorly and therefore the attendance on those days makes as much of an impact as non-attendance.

However, long term, making a child attend when in such a state health wise can lead to longer absences as their illness/exhaustion worsens.

Penguin- You really need to calm down love, he's FIVE!

Report

retainertrainer · 07/07/2017 10:25

Peng-how is a 5 year old going to get a better 'outcome' from going to school feverish and exhausted?

Remember that time in reception when your mum kept you off school because you'd had an awful night's sleep and she thought you were coming down with something? No,I don't either because I can't remember anything from reception days! They don't even legally need to be there!
