To think that swimming pool should not allow people to swim with underwear on?

Just got back from my local pool. Obviously very busy as hot day here.

I'm sick of the pool not giving a shit about hygiene, all the teenager and early 20s groups of lads using the pools were wearing swimming shorts but kept their boxers on too. Used to see this sometimes but now seems to be the done thing.

I mean ffs lovely to wear a pair of pants all day in 30 degree heat and then go into a pool in them.

Anyone else hate this? Why are pool so slack with behaviour now, I'm not that old but I remember that pool lifeguards when I was a teenager were a cross between hitler and robocob and slung anyone out for not following this: www.sweetandnostalgic.co.uk/swimming-pool-safety---metal-wall-sign-1292-p.asp

How strange... If they're worried about folk seeing their willies (outline of) then they need to quit wearing those bloody grey jersey tracksuit bottoms. I hate them!

PurplePeppers · 06/07/2017 21:43

They could also wear the swimming shirt with nothing underneath all day long and then go into the pool.
That's why most pools in France only allow speedos rather than swimming shorts.

I agree with you re hygiene and clearly several countries do too...

And for those commenting about the chlorine, why do you think you are supposed to go under the shower BEFORE entering the pool? It's because if you dint, you are bringing a hell of a,lot more germs and particules, which means much higher levels of chlorine in the water. (not very good on a health perspective)

Fl0ellafunbags · 06/07/2017 21:47

Do they go commando after their swim then? Or do they have spare pants?

Mum2jenny · 06/07/2017 21:51

Go to France, only budgie cheaters allowed!

VestalVirgin · 06/07/2017 21:53

Don't swim shorts all have that mesh inner pants thing in them to keep everything contained?

And even if not, why not just wear two pairs of swimwear instead of normal underwear? Confused

Well, I sure hope all those well-endowed husbands at least make sure it is freshly washed pants they wear underneath.

Amanduh · 06/07/2017 21:57

The pants arent going to make a difference. What if they just wore their swimshorts all day with no pants underneath then got in the pool with them on, no different

Mum2jenny · 06/07/2017 21:58

Who actually cares? The pool will be treated with chlorine to allow for the fact that dirty skankers will be using it. So it'll be ok.

MrsEricBana · 06/07/2017 22:00

But yes do they then go home commando? How will they have their whole pants showing over the waistband of their trousers then??? (Old gimmer alert)

8misskitty8 · 06/07/2017 22:00

Mentioning chlorine reminded me that the stronger the smell of chorine the more dirt and PEE there is in the pool. The chlorine smell is caused by the chemical reaction between the chorine and dirt/pee.

Op, pools usually have a notice to say only swimwear to be worn so
Yanbu.

Boulshired · 06/07/2017 22:03

If you are the sort of person to wear dirty undies in the pool the chances are you are the sort of person who ignores the shower before swim rule. Dirt and sweat will be there regardless.

Charlotteswigwam · 06/07/2017 22:05

Our swimming pool (Netherlands) has posters up saying it is not allowed to keep underwear on under clothes. I always wondered who on earth would do that. No we know...

user1486076969 · 06/07/2017 22:08

Lots of men's 'Board Shorts' don't have the inner mesh bit that you would normally expect in swimming trunks/shorts etc.

user1486076969 · 06/07/2017 22:10

..or mens'...

Superheroessidekick · 06/07/2017 22:20

Yes we bring spare boxers one to wear under swimming trunks one to wear home after. The mesh things are rubbish no where near tight enough and once wet everything kind of clings. I think he worries he will get funny looks around the children if he doesn't take extra care to cover it up Confused

WomblingThree · 06/07/2017 22:21

Am I the only person that puts my swimming costume on under my clothes before I go to the pool? Can't see its any different to that.

VestalVirgin · 06/07/2017 22:21

The pants arent going to make a difference. What if they just wore their swimshorts all day with no pants underneath then got in the pool with them on, no different

It is less likely that they wear swimshorts all day, and also, swimwear is made of a different kind of fibre. It is uncomfortable and plastic-y, but things wash off easier. So they should get cleaner under the shower.

If those males shower at all before going to the pool. Which I don't have much hope they do, seeing as they don't even change properly.

Mentioning chlorine reminded me that the stronger the smell of chorine the more dirt and PEE there is in the pool. The chlorine smell is caused by the chemical reaction between the chorine and dirt/pee.

So UK pools smell stronger than European ones not because there's more chlorine in there, but because there's more dirt?

Every day, there's a thread on mumsnet to remind me why I should be grateful I live in Germany.

Paffle · 06/07/2017 22:29

user it's men's. You were right first time.

Ahem, carry on, everyone.

marcopront · 06/07/2017 22:34

I went to a water park in India. We were the only ones in swimming costumes, everyone else just went in fully dressed.

Passthecake30 · 06/07/2017 22:35

I agree with a pp... the grey joggers are just hideous.

I don't care about pants under swimmers, water must be pretty gross anyway

BSJohnson · 06/07/2017 22:36

Goodness no, YANBU. Too many English people are filthy mingers. And I say that as someone half English.

CryingMessFFS · 06/07/2017 22:41

I don't see how it's that bad, their sweaty bollocks are in the pool whether they wear undies under shorts or not?

beingsunny · 06/07/2017 22:46

This is normal in Australia, lots of men wear they boxers under boardies...

blubberball · 06/07/2017 23:06

We went to a swimming pool in Germany, and I must say that it was spotlessly clean, and the changing rooms were huge. They was a lovely outdoor lane pool, and I'm sure that it was just like tap water. I couldn't smell any chlorine at all.

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 06/07/2017 23:23

Hygiene aside, water weighs down fabric; why would you want an extra layer to drag you down when you swim? Surely that's what boxers would do? How horrible.

I've never understood why men nowadays swim in seriously long shorts anyway, if they're actually intent on swimming. Pretty sure my great granny gladly left her bloomers and frilly blouse swimming outfit back in the Edwardian era, where it belonged....

AtticusCactus · 06/07/2017 23:32

Totally normal here in Aus as a lot of board shorts don't have the inbuilt mesh.
Boardies are worn as shorts as well as swimwear so the boys would need to wear undies.
I dunno, it's not really something I've thought about.
