Your salary, I mean. Obviously I know what the situation is in the public sector (and how it sucks); but what's happening in the private sector? I remember, many aeons ago, that I used to get an annual pay review, which would inevitably be followed by a small, but significant rise. Because, y'know, bread and beer and bananas were all going up in price, and that seemed like the reasonable thing to do.

I haven't had a rise in over seven years now, despite the cost of living soaring - and my job becoming considerably more demanding. I've been thinking, well, that's normal (aus-fucking-terity); and, as in the public sector, it sucks.

But am I missing something? Is every else's salary still going up, year on year, even without a change of job title? I don't need specific details, obviously, but if anyone is prepared to share what their job is, and whether or not they expect an annual, incremental rise, I would find it hugely helpful...

Thank you.

Private sector, we have performance related increases and the majority its about 1 or 2%, more if you benchmark lower than the average for your pay grade. I remember the heady days of 10% bonuses and 10% pay increases {sigh}

photographyaddict · 06/07/2017 19:23

Yep because I'm on minimum wage but looking to get a better job soon! Smile

HolyShmoly · 06/07/2017 19:24

I work in the third sector and get a cost of living increase every year. Last year was just over 1% and this year it's looking to be a similar amount. When i worked in the private sector there was also an annual increase, linked to cost of living and the organisation performance. I can't remember how much it was though, maybe around 2 or 3%.

AlexaAmbidextra · 06/07/2017 19:29

Voluntary sector. No pay rise since 2008. Charities rely an awful lot on staff goodwill. Sadly, that goodwill is now being eroded.

yummycake123 · 06/07/2017 19:29

Yes, i get about 2% increase per year and I work in the private sector. This is a standard raise for everyone, not linked to performance.
We have a bonus scheme that is linked to personal performance and company performance.
Only promotions have given me a significant pay increase.

GissASquizz · 06/07/2017 19:31

I got 1.5% this year. Private health care.

Titsywoo · 06/07/2017 19:34

DHs goes up about 3% a year but generally he has had a separate payrise each year as well as he has moved up quickly in the company. I haven't had a payrise in 9 years but I work for a struggling charity so I don't ask for one and DH earns enough that it doesn't affect us.

StinkPickle · 06/07/2017 19:34

I employ 15 people. Sales are about the same as they were 5 years ago. Therefore I haven't had a pay rise. Why should they? It's not an automatic right.

PrincessLeia80 · 06/07/2017 19:36

Private sector and before this year hubby had only 3 pay rises of 1% in the last 10 years this year he had dropped below minimum wage so ended up with 4% to get back to minimum wage this was only after a colleague complained though!

trilbydoll · 06/07/2017 19:38

We have pay bands (manufacturing co) and the pay rises are designed to keep you in the middle. I'm a bit underpaid so I usually get about 5% but the lady who works for me is near the top of hers so I think this year she got something ridiculous like 1.25%. I was quite embarrassed telling her!

NorfolkEnchance · 06/07/2017 19:43

Every year plus a small bonus of about 600 in the summer. Work for Network Rail.

don't forget the generous public sector pensions - would cost over 40% salary to reproduce in the private sector on the terms most companies have to finance their defined benefit pension schemes

lastrose123 · 06/07/2017 19:55

user149232466
As far as I am aware public centre pensions are no longer as generous as they were.

neveradullmoment99 · 06/07/2017 19:56

No. I am a teacher Sad

Awholelotofhot · 06/07/2017 20:00

I've never not had an annual pay rise - I work in marketing.

TheQuestingVole · 06/07/2017 20:02

It's true that in real terms public sector workers' pay has fallen since 2005, but that is also true across the board - and private sector pay on average fell more than public sector pay did over the same period. So public sector pay, on average, is now higher relative to private sector than it was before the recession.

Private sector earnings are also more variable, and more distributed - more very low-paid and very high-paid individuals. Really you have to look at comparable jobs in private and public sector to get a sense of relative growth in earnings - it's not uniformly better in the private sector when you break it down by profession.

I am public sector and get a 1% rise.

Fresh8008 · 06/07/2017 20:06

Work in childcare and been frozen for past 5 years. I get why some people deserve a pay rise but why is the MSM always on about how the public sector are deserving a pay rise, but the private sector never gets a mention. We deserve a pay rise to. I would be probably unfairly very resentful if teachers and nurses got a pay rise because they get on TV and people in non public sector jobs have to pay the tax to fund it.

DonaldStott · 06/07/2017 20:07

In my previous job, I was on exactly the same wage for 4 years.

Been in my new job for about a year and this year it was negotiated that we receive a 2.3% increase plus an extra days holiday. I have also just moved up in my band so I pick up about an extra £75 per month, with 32 days holiday a year.

I really can't complain.

isseywithcats · 06/07/2017 20:10

DP public sector (education) his pay rise this 1% im in catering minimum wage mine goes up in line with government increase

Katescurios · 06/07/2017 20:13

Nope, I'm in private sector education and 'no money' has been the excuse for the last 6 years. Thankfully I've moved to more senior roles a couple of times during that period so my salary has increased that way.

DragonMamma · 06/07/2017 20:16

Private sector and usually a 3% performance related increase each year and sometimes a grand bonus

ticketytock1 · 06/07/2017 20:19

I get 2-3% annually... very lucky!

ChangedToday · 06/07/2017 20:19

Working for a university in a non-academic position. No automatic moving up the spine points for me and we've had 1% rises for a few years now.

catlover1987 · 06/07/2017 20:24

I have a salary review every year but I'm not guaranteed a rise. The last 3 years I have had one though. Mine is performance related so not everyone gets a rise. We do all get a bonus though which is linked to the company's performance as a whole. I work in a large accountancy firm (big 4.)

Goodasgold17 · 06/07/2017 20:27

Nope. Zero pay rise for 8 years
